INTRODUCTION

This two-day short course is aimed at equipping practicing civil and structural engineers with up-to-date knowledge on the fundamentals of post-tensioned concrete design. This includes the basic mechanics of post-tensioned concrete, preliminary sizing of post-tensioned structures, beams (determinate and indeterminate) and slabs (one-way and two-way) design. Manual calculation methods, which can be code and non-code based will be presented. Computer based designs will also be demonstrated, including the limitations of relying on the computer programs. The course will also include strut and tie models for detailing, pitfalls and special problems in post-tensioned concrete. Examples using post-tensioned concrete solutions to meet modern architectural challenges will be presented. This course will demonstrate why post-tensioned concrete is a Science as well as an Art.

Post-tensioned concrete constituents. Special demands in modern concrete structures. Tea Break Session 2: Prestressing forces: Effective post-tension forces, anchorage reinforcement, strut and tie model. Load Balancing Method Lunch Session 3: Statically determinate structure: Flexural design, deflection, shear and torsion. Tea Break Session 4: Statically indeterminate structures: secondary effects. Preliminary sizing of structures. Day 2 Session 5: Floor systems: banded slabs, flat slabs, flat plates, two-way slab supported by walls. Punching shear, edge conditions. Tea Break Session 6: Design examples. PT hardware. Quality control of post-tension structures. Lunch Session 7: The Science and Art of post-tensioning: Transfer structures, stressing access, grouting, movement joints. Detailing (Strut & Tie revisited). Modification and demolition of existing structures. Floor vibrations Tea Break Session 8: Conclusions and the future with posttensioned concrete. SPEAKERS PROFILE:

Dr. Peter Gabor received his Masters (Civil and Structural) in 1972 and his Ph.D degree in 1980, all from the Technical Universit y of Budapest. His international work experiences span from projects in Hungary, Germany, Algeria, to Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Panama and many other countries. Among his major projects in Malaysia include the Menara Telekom, Menara Public Bank (Johor Bahru), UTP (Seri Iskandar, Perak) and Menara Maxis Tower. His other major projects include the upgrading of the Sydney Opera House, concrete structures for the Beijing W ater Cube and the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. Many of Dr. Gabor concrete design solutions are very innovative and led to several publications in international journals. He has successfully collaborated with leading international architects such as Norman Foster, Hijjas Khasturi, Ken Yeang, GDP and PTW architects. Dr. Gabor emigrated to Australia in 1984. He is now a specialist concrete consultant as well as a lecturer in The University of Sydney. He serves as member of several subcommittees of the Australian Standard AS 3600 on concrete structures. He is a member of TG5 of the Concrete Institute Australia on concrete cracking.
