The thought of being pampered in the luxurious comfort of The Spa always makes my day. But my sense of anticipation was heightened after hearing about Microcurrent on Oprah. Touted as the "treatment of youth," this was something special a coveted, non-invasive, anti-aging technique that all the top models and Hollywood stars flock to before a big event to look their very best. Could it really be all that - or is this just the latest Hollywood hype? As I relax in The Spa lounge, Lead Esthetician Laura Hogan greets me with a glass of mineral water with a refreshing citrus flavor. "This will help rehydrate your skin for the treatment," she says. Water conducts electricity, and Microcurrent works in harmony with the body's own natural electrical impulses. The Microcurrent machine emits micro amounts of electricity (less than 500 micro amperes) which increases the natural levels of ATP (cellular energy stores) in the muscles by up to 500 percent, leading to increased muscular tone. And it doesn't end there. Studies conducted on Microcurrent at the University of Washington indicate a 14 percent increase in natural collagen production, a 48 percent increase in natural elastin, and a 36 percent increase in blood circulation. Face and neck muscles regain a more lifted and youthful appearance. The skin looks more healthy and toned, and fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed. The Microcurrent treatment begins with a "normalization" phase to relax the facial muscles. Laura takes a couple of large sponges, which are connected to the Microcurrent machine, and begins gently swiping my face with a solution. I don't feel any "current." In fact, it's quite relaxing to feel the soothing touch of soft sponge against my skin. Next comes a "muscle re-education" phase. Holding probes in each hand, Laura uses scooping and contouring movements to lengthen or shorten the muscles of my face. I can actually feel the muscles being gently manipulated. There are 32 different muscles of the face that are addressed during the average treatment. No wonder some of her clients fondly refer to this as a "mini-workout for the face." It feels quite pleasant, and I'm excited to know that I'll be able to see a visible difference immediately after the treatment. Much like regular exercise, the effects of Microcurrent are cumulative and the results and their longevity become better and better after each treatment. For the best long-term results, Laura recommends the Ultimate Age-Defying Microcurrent in a series of 10 treatments over five weeks, followed by a monthly treatment thereafter. Two other levels of service are also available: Invisible Expression (designed to focus on the expression lines on the face such as around the eyes, and forehead) and Microcurrent Turbolift (for a wedding or special occasion). Results typically last for 72 hours, unless undergoing a series of treatments. Microcurrent also works well in conjunction with other treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers, and Microdermabrasion. While Botox and dermal fillers treat expression lines, Microcurrent can complement the effect by sculpting and contouring the muscles of the face including the eyebrows, upper cheek, and jaw line. Microdermabrasion and Microcurrent have also been successfully partnered as Microcurrent works from the inside out and Microdermabrasion works from the outside in. "We offer a 15-minute complimentary consultation if you're not sure what's right for you," says Laura. "Everybody's concerns are different. Someone in their 20s will have different needs from someone in their 40s or 50s. We have many options here at The Spa (and Spa Medica) and can guide you as to whether you'd benefit best from Microcurrent, Microdermabrasion, a chemical peel, or another service." After the muscle re-education phase is over, Laura brushes on an herbal mask. The aromatic fragrance of licorice, fennel, and rosemary fill my senses, relaxing me even further. She asks if I'd like to try the Microcurrent mask (an add-on service) which helps product penetration. "I've seen amazing results with this," she says. I try it out while she gives me a hand massage. You may also opt to enhance your facial with additional add-on treatments. Finally, I step off the table and look in the mirror. Is it my imagination or do my cheeks look fuller and where did those fine lines around my mouth go? As I sip on another mineral cocktail before reluctantly leaving the tranquil surroundings of The Spa, the rest of my day doesn't seem so hurried. I walk back to my office with a bounce in my step, taking this feeling of serenity and well-being with me, confident that my face is lifted, radiant, and looking its very best.
