Different characters in red and white

A recent test in monthly Dutch magazine `LandbouwMechanisatie' typifies the dilemma facing today's farmers and contractors: three tractors, all of a similar horsepower and appearance but with very different specs concealed beneath their suitably snazzy panels. So, which is the one to go for? Rather than answer this question, which obviously depends on an individual buyer's circumstances, it's interesting to note the many points of separation on what would seem to be relatively comparable products.

Similar hp, similar colour, but very different specifications the Steyr 6145, McCormick XTX 185 and Massey Ferguson 7480 mid-hp tractors.

For starters, the MF 7480 and Steyr CVT 6145 drive through stepless transmissions, whereas the McCormick XTX directs its power to ground via an eightstep semi-powershift.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Dutch testers reckoned the MF was the easiest of the tested threesome to operate for a newcomer, followed by the Steyr, which could well be a reflection of the longer

history of stepless transmissions on mainland Europe. Less surprising is that the stepless boxes offer greater potential for automation of many of the tractor's regularly used functions. Under the bonnet, the Steyr's engine sips on AdBlue to meet emission regulations, whereas neither the MF nor McCormick features this exhaust-cleaning technology for now. So, after all that, this mid-hp trio of mainstream tractors isn't so similar at all. By Henk Beunk Netherlands correspondent

Komati farmer wins an award for transport work

Richard Gordon is a real pioneer of modern sugar cane transport and harvesting systems. In recognition of his contribution to the industry he was recently presented with an award by the Mpumalanga Cane Growers' Association. When Mr Gordon started work on South African cane farms in the 1960s, most cane was hauled to the mill on the narrow gauge `golovaan' trains. He heard about an innovative self-loading, tractor-drawn trailer built by Irvine Bell, and this began a lifetime's association with the Bell family business. The company that Mr Gordon worked for went into the cane transporting business and was eventually moving 600,000t /yr, but he still felt that loading the cane was taking too long. Irvine Bell, together with his son Peter, had in the interim developed the three-wheeler self-propelled cane loader, sold initially as the Funkey-Bell. By the mid1980s the Gordon and Bell families had become close friends and Mr Gordon was actively promoting Bell loaders and haulage tractors. In 1991 the Gordons invested in their own cane farm in the Komatipoort district, very close to the Swaziland/Mozambique borders. As well as farming, Mr Gordon has since grown his own haulage business from 30,000 to 220,000t/ yr utilising Bell rigid haulers. His favourite tractor is a Bell 2306 model that has clocked up in excess of 60,000 hours of service since 1992. The engine was re- Richard Gordon and Bell Equipment's Russell placed after 40,000 Conn look on as a Bell Flexi Loader loads a tandem trailer attached to one of Mr Gordon's hours in 2003 and hard-worked Bell Series II Haulage Tractors. the diff at 60,000 in 2010, but the Allison automatic By Joe Spencer gearbox has not been touched, according to Mr Gordon.
