Service Component: Orientation

Objective

01.a Conduct specialized orientations in 10% of ESL courses each semester covering American higher education, college curriculum, student services, and how to establish and realize realistic educational goals. 01.b Collaborate with ESL Department Chair and Dean to provide 1 outside of class group orientation per semester for select groups of new ESL students and ESL late enrollees.

Activity

1.1 Work with ESL faculty in determining appropriate schedule of class visitations.

1.2 Maintain working relationships with credit faculty groups in order to understand the major needs of ESL graduates and non-native speakers taking credit courses. 1.3 Develop a survey form to collect information during classroom orientations to better understand student questions and needs, and to use in providing follow-up services for target students.

Objective

A1.a 50% 0f all ESL students receiving a Student Evaluation Plan will be assisted in making career choices and educational planning, including appropriate testing and vocational counseling. A1.b Based upon counselor determination, all ESL students with appropriate skill levels will be referred for English and math placement.

Activity

1.1 Provide computer and software for student use.

1.2 Administer "Fast Assessment" to individual students. 1.3 Assist students in scheduling appointments to take the college placement tests.

Objective

C1.a Provide on-site educational, vocational, and personal counseling services that will result in at least 10% of non-credit, level 1 and level 2 ESL students receiving a Student Education Plan by the end of the semester. C1.b Provide on-site counseling services that will result in at least 28% of level 3 and level 4 ESL students receiving a Student Education Plan by the end of the semester. C1.c Develop and provide specialized support services to at least 10% of the targeted population, and to 15 potential ESL students each semester, based upon identified needs

Activity

1.1 Maintain counseling office at primary ESL learning site and determine schedule and means for publicizing counseling services routinely available at other ESL sites. Status: Done 1.2 Provide on-site advisement and counseling services at times that are convenient to ESL students. Status: Done 1.3 Purchase and install computer terminal, related equipment, and software at primary ESL site enabling counselor to access computerized student records and ESL students to access Coastline's online counseling web page and information about potential transfer colleges. Status: Done 1.4 Maintain accurate record keeping for all provided services. Status: In Progress

C2 Establish visible, accessible, risk-free counseling presence for ESL students

Activity

2.1 Network with students and pass out business card during breaks; set up kiosks in areas of high student traffic. 2.2 Assist students seeking referral to appropriate community agencies or services where necessary to alleviate education, vocational, or personal concerns. 2.3 Post office hours when students may drop-in; communicate the availability and purposes of drop-in counseling. 2.4 Provide sign-up sheets for students requesting specific appointment times; assist students who need to call the counseling office to set up formal appointments (those students needing to have transcripts sent from admissions.)

C3. Document all contacts.

Activity

3.1 .Log all contacts in notebook 3.2. Implement SARS Software in Counseling. 3.3 Sort the database by primary language for use in scheduling bilingual counseling activities (Spanish and Vietnamese.) Status: Done 3.4 Provide special counseling and follow-up services based upon a sorting of the specific characteristics of the target student groups.

1.a Increase participation and success rates of non-native speakers taking degree applicable courses by 10% for next semester

Activity

1.1 Work with students and faculty in clarifying skills/preparation/behaviors noncredit students will need in order to survive in traditional campus environments, and those needed to succeed in credit courses. 1.2 Administer a Campus Climate survey to non-credit ESL students during the fall semester. 1. 3 Establish "Access Program" to help with transitioning to college level courses. 1.4 Refer students to appropriate degreeapplicable courses where they can succeed (e.g. math.)

2.a Increase access rates of non-native speakers in non-credit ESL classes, Basic Skills Curses, and select degree-applicable courses by 10%.

Activity

2.1 Work with Dean, ESL faculty and the Counseling Department to coordinate and participate in new non-credit student recruitment. 2.2 Participate in outreach programs with local high schools, colleges, and businesses (e.g., career days, college fairs, transfer nights.) 2.3 Develop and provide trilingual (Vietnamese, Spanish, and English) voice mail menu capabilities that includes information about counseling, career assessment, ESL courses, financial aid, and EOPS, and how to earn an AA degree or vocational certificate. Status: Done
