Nice things in and around Peckham

Southall Broadway: a joyous riot of colour and aroma, this stretch of the Uxbridge Road is a celebration of all things Indian, Pakistani and Afghani. There are restaurants galore, but it is the shopping that always lures me beautiful fabrics, mouth-drooling sweeties, heady spices and the best of Bollywood at silly prices. Green Lanes, Haringey: Greeks and Turks jostle for space in this busy shopping thoroughfare. This is the place to get Greek or Turkish supplies food, drink, pastries, handicrafts.

And in London as a whole

407

The Lantern Taverna, 5 Grosvenor Parade, Ealing Common w5 3nn (020 8992 4207): pure nepotism this, as it is run by a Greek Cypriot friend of ours. If you want a really fun night out with live music and meze, this West London venue may well be for you. Golborne Road: just off the more famous Portobello Road. Jamshid and I had a stall there selling Persian foods for about a year; we were fair-weather traders, just doing Fridays and Saturdays. Jolly hard work, market trading. Golborne Road is a real treasure, full of Portuguese and Moroccan delights. Bumblebee, 30, 32 & 33 Brecknock Road, Kentish Town, n7 0dd (020 7607 1936): a fabulous organic and wholefood empire spread out over several shops; they used to buy lots of goods from us, and we don't know why they don't any more so if you see them don't forget to ask.

Language

Being too much of a hypochondriac myself to buy any books on the subject, my recommendations consist entirely of websites. <www.unani.com> covers very alternative medicine. <www.etext.library.adelaide> contains a good translation of Hippocrates' aphorisms by Francis Adams. <www.afghan.network> has lots of good stuff, particularly a biography of Avicenna)

Medicine

Dr Sohrab Khoshbin, Giahan Mojezegar (Miraculous Herbs) (Tehran, Nashreh Salez, 2005). This is currently unavailable in English although a translation, as 100 Miraculous Herbs, is mooted (see the website <www. drkhoshbin.com>).
