The assessment method is based on a structured procedure (KO questions, open and closed questions), the relevant questions being assessed in a scoring system as applicable. Motivation and benefits IRIS International Railway Industry Standard was introduced by a workgroup of UNIFE (Union des Industries Ferroviaires Européennes Association of European Railway Industries) in order to develop a world-wide standard based on ISO 9001 while considering the rail specific characteristics. At the moment this sector specific procedure is also used in automotive industry, in aerospace and food industries as well as in telecommunications industry. This standard has been elaborated as a "non-profit" programme in order to ensure the high quality of rail vehicle industry. The standard also is to promote transnational competition. Periodic knowledge checks and further training of the auditors are compulsory.
