What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and treatment, which recognises that much of the pain and disability we suffer stems from abnormalities in the structure and function of the body. This school of medicine, founded in 1874, aims to restore the individual's natural healing ability by using a combination of treatment involving manual techniques, lifestyle improvements and health advice. At the initial consultation the osteopath will ask detailed questions about general health, diet, lifestyle, emotional state, as well as medical and family history. This will be followed by a physical examination, with the patient sitting, standing, walking and possibly carrying out other movements. This allows for a diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to the patient's needs. Osteopathy is used for treating problems associated with muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints. It focuses, not only on the joints of the spine, and the nervous system, but also on the body as a whole. Whilst back and neck pain are common problems seen, osteopathy can help treat a wide range of health problems. So make sure you choose a practitioner who is registered with the General Osteopathic Council.

What is Counselling?

The counselling process is one in which you have an opportunity for a private face-to-face discussion with a concerned, highly skilled counsellor for the purpose of resolving your situation. Your counsellor will be an active participant in this problem-solving process, asking questions, making suggestions, and helping you to perceive the situation in a different light. Counselling is an active process, intended to be short-term, and specifically directed towards resolving the problems that brought you to counselling. There are times in life when we all experience `problems with living' which we don't seem able to handle on our own. Whether it is a marital problem or a child having difficulty in school, a troubled adolescent, or a situation of substance abuse, spending a few hours with a professional counsellor can be immensely helpful. The earlier you seek help for a problem, the better chance you have to resolve it.

Day Case And Minor Surgery

These operations are performed either by visiting consultants or by our own surgeon, and patients will be able to return home very soon after the procedure with a carer. Full information will be given to patients when appointments are booked. This unique service means that appropriate patients will not have to attend the hospital for these diagnostic and corrective procedures. Referral for operations is by GP only. Home Visits

If you can get to the surgery please do so. If a problem is very urgent we will try to fit you in as soon as possible. Home visits are only for those who are too ill to come into the surgery, not for those for whom it is inconvenient. Phone requests for visits should be made between 8.00 and 10.30am. If a visit is requested it will be vetted by a doctor and only done on the same day if medically necessary.

Colds and Sinus Pain

Take plenty of fluids, paracetamol or, if over 16 years old, aspirin. Inhalations with steam and Karvol can help clear the passages. You should be on the mend after seven days or so and usually better by two weeks. If you are getting worse we need to see you. If you are asthmatic and have a cold it is sensible to increase use of your brown inhaler.

Coughs

These can be soothed by a drink made from honey and freshly squeezed lemon juice in hot water. If particularly irritating, steam inhalations may be worthwhile. If you are bringing up coloured phlegm, we may need to check your chest.

Emergency Visits

To speak to NHS Direct for medical advice please ring 0845 46 47. Telephone 0845 850 2783 for medical emergencies when the surgery is closed. You may also attend the local "Walk-in Centre", situated in Pantile Avenue, Southend, when the surgery is closed. Details of all Medical Services in the area are available from South East Essex Primary Care Trust, Phoenix Court, Christopher Martin Road, Basildon, Essex SS14 3HG, telephone number 01268 705000.

Sore Throats

Drink plenty of cold fluids and take the appropriate dose of paracetamol. Most sore throats will settle in five to seven days. If you can see white spots on the tonsils, please consult your doctor. Ice lollies can be very soothing. Avoid medicated lozenges.

Chickenpox

On the first day a rash appears as small red patches about 3-4 mm across. Within a few hours small blisters appear in the centre of these patches. During the next three or four days further patches will appear scattered over the body and the earlier ones will turn crusty and fall off. Calamine lotion may be applied to soothe the itching which occurs with this. The most infectious period is from two or three days before the rash appears and up to five days after the first spot has appeared. Children may return to school as soon as the last crusts have dropped off. Keep away from pregnant ladies. Antibiotics are not necessary in a child who is otherwise well. Adults with chickenpox should seek advice.

Freedom Of Information Publication Scheme

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 obliges the practice to produce a Publication Scheme. A Publication Scheme is a guide to the `classes' of information the practice intends to routinely make available. This scheme is available on request from the practice manager.

Zero Tolerance

We strongly support the NHS policy on zero tolerance. Anyone attending the surgery who abuses the GPs, staff or other patients be it verbally, physically or in any threatening manner whatsoever, will risk removal from the practice list. In extreme cases we may summon the police to remove offenders from the practice premises.

Mumps

Symptoms are swelling of the glands in front of one ear, often followed after a couple of days by swelling in front of the other ear. It is infectious from two or three days before the swelling appears and until eight or ten days after that date. With the advent of MMR immunisation, mumps is extremely rare.

Self Treatment Of Common Illnesses And Accidents

Many common aches and pains can be simply treated at home without the need to consult a doctor.

Minor Cuts and Grazes

Wash the wound thoroughly with water and a little soap. To stop bleeding apply a clean handkerchief or dressing firmly to the wound for about five minutes and afterwards cover with a clean, dry dressing.

Antibiotics

Firstly, a note on these commonly prescribed and powerful medicines. They only work on bacteria and are without effect on viruses. Unfortunately, this means that the common infections like coughs, colds and flu etc, will not be helped by them at all. The correct treatment is by following the simple remedies outlined in this section; we only use antibiotics when they fail and we suspect that there is a secondary bacterial infection. Overuse of antibiotics may lead to their not working in future and more complications like thrush, skin rashes etc.

Back Pain

Back pain causes 13 million working days to be lost in Britain each year. The spine, being made up of 24 bones with associated ligaments and tendons, supports the whole weight of the upper body. It is therefore not surprising that it will occasionally let you down. If, however, as is usual, the pain has been caused by excessive strain, eg lifting excessive weights or slipping whilst doing so, be sensible and take things easy. Sit upright

Family Mediation helps couples and other family members deal with the issues arising from a breakdown in a relationship, leading to separation or divorce in a constructive manner. The mediator, who is impartial, will assist the parties in resolving their differences and come to an agreement between themselves without recourse to court proceedings, which would be costly and prolonged. The issues may relate to children, property, finance or any other issues that are important to the parties and the process, which is voluntary and confidential, will help the parties consider the other party's situation and, in particular, the needs and feelings of any children. On average, three one hour sessions are needed but the process may take longer if matters are complex or contentious. Mediators make sure that certain ground rules are respected, thus allowing discussions to be as balanced and productive as possible. Although they can give legal information, mediators cannot give legal advice. The aim of mediation is therefore to reduce the stress and expense involved when a relationship breaks down and assist the parties in resolving matters between them.

with support for the small of the back. Take painkillers such as aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol (the former will not only relieve the pain but will reduce the inflammation in the muscles, ligaments or tendons which are causing it). Local warmth such as that from a hot water bottle or from rubbing in liniment will also help to ease the discomfort.

Smoking

Why Give Up?

A large number of people die each year in this country from smoking-related diseases. Every cigarette you smoke can shorten your life by an average of five and a half minutes. Babies of smokers are, on average, 200 grammes lighter than those of nonsmokers. Smokers smell!

Flu

Flu is characterised by a high temperature, headache and generalised aches and pains in the limbs. There are many causes of these symptoms, the vast majority due to viruses. Antibiotics are of no value whatsoever in viral infections. The treatment of these symptoms lies initially with the patient. Aspirin is a lot better than paracetamol and two soluble aspirin given every four to six hours with fluids to drink and nothing to eat and bed rest are the best answer. Aspirin should not be given to children under 16. If you have symptoms over and above those described, or you have been unwell for more than five days, please ring the surgery and either yourself or a relative can speak to the doctor who will investigate the matter further. It is not unusual to feel tired for a couple of weeks after flu.

How To Give Up

Stopping smoking is all about motivation. Without the real desire to give up you will be unable to succeed. You must want to give up rather than feel you should give up. Set a date a week or so in the future when you intend to stop. Tell all your friends, relations and work colleagues that you're giving up on that day and ask for their support and encouragement. If at all possible, find someone to give up with you. When the big day comes, plan it carefully with plenty to keep you occupied. Avoid situations where the desire to smoke will be strongest such as whilst drinking. Finally, carefully put the money you would have spent on cigarettes on one side, each day, to save up for some special treat as a reward. If you've tried everything and failed but are still keen to give up, seek help from your doctor.

Temperatures

Children often run temperatures with no other symptoms. They need to be cooled down and given Calpol and then they will feel better. If the temperature persists for more than 24 hours or other symptoms appear please ring the surgery and speak to a doctor who will give you the necessary advice or see your child. Fever slips are extremely unreliable.

Diarrhoea and Vomiting

Acute diarrhoea and vomiting in adults is usually a self-limiting condition. Often it is associated with abdominal pain which comes and goes in spasms, a "colic". By fasting and taking frequent sips of clear fluids, the problem will usually resolve. The vomiting usually settles within 24 hours and the diarrhoea may take longer. Diarrhoea and vomiting in babies and toddlers requires closer observation. It is, however, quite common for young babies to have frequent loose stools and not be unwell. This is not a sign of illness. Babies with vomiting and diarrhoea should be taken off their milk and fed a solution of cooled boiled water. They should be given small volumes frequently. Consult your doctor if your baby continues to vomit for more than eight hours or is becoming generally weaker. There is no place for anti-diarrhoeals in young children and you are better to consult the doctor if worried. Fluids are important. Food is less important. Simple ice lollies can be helpful in fractious children.

Preventing A Relapse

Whenever you feel the need for a cigarette, go back to the procedure which helped you give up in the first place. Avoid complacency and remember that you're a non-smoker! Think how unpleasant smokers smell now that you've given up. Do you want to smell like them?

Head Lice

These creatures, contrary to popular belief, prefer clean hair and are not a sign of poor personal hygiene. Use of a conditioner and fine comb is advised by the doctor for removal of eggs and lice. It is seldom necessary to use chemicals.

May we remind you again that missed appointments are very frustrating for both doctor and other patients who may have had difficulty getting an appointment which you are not using. Thank you for your consideration.

One-to-One

A new weight loss programme has been developed to help you lose weight and improve your health. Each week for 12* weeks you will be weighed, you will have in-depth, one-to-one support sessions, you will learn about food and will meet with a personal trainer who will advise you on exercise. Life has changed in the past 50 years. Technology has made our lives easier and we have become less active. We have become increasingly heavy. It is a simple equation: if we eat more calories than we use up, we will put on weight. None of us intend being overweight. We are surrounded by calorie dense food, life is busy and it is often easier to buy something ready prepared. Many people do not cook from scratch. All this is making us unhealthy. Excess fat, sugar and salt make food tasty but are dangerous.

Why your business needs a website

WITHOUT a website, your business or practice is invisible to the two thirds of prospective clients that use the Internet to locate products and services, and this figure grows daily. Worse still, if your competitors have a website and you don't, then they are picking up your share of the prospects for your type of business when they search online. Pay As You Go websites are proving to be a godsend to small and medium-sized businesses across the UK and Ireland. Introduced by OPG Ltd, who have been building websites for more than eight years, and whose innovative ideas have been helping businesses to grow and prosper for over 30 years, they provide businesses and professional practices with 24/7 access to their targeted market. A website not only saves you money on brochures and other such material, it greatly increases the effectiveness of your current advertising because, in effect, you are open for business around the clock. Uniquely, the Pay - Monthly service comes with Web Partner support. This `phone-afriend' facility will provide answers to your queries and help you develop your site as your business grows. So if you don't yet have a website, or are unhappy with the one you have, call today for an informal chat on 0800 612 1408. You'll be glad you did!
