TREND EXPERT

ow might you describe a woman who has worked with world renowned biologists radio-tracking wolves in the wild, performed hundreds of times on stage, revels in traveling alone in countries where she has no concept of the language, owns her own business, launches magazines and has written three books? (And this is just the condensed version!) It's just another day in the life, according to The Complete Home Decorating Idea Book author, Kathleen Stoehr, Minneapolis, MN, who packs more into one week than many people will in a month -- or more. Her career in interior design began with a step inside a shop specializing in spatial organization. She was working on her master's degree in theatre history, but needed a little part time job. Seven years later, after managing all three locations and learning the intricacies of design (as well as teaching seminars on home improvement to hundreds), she took a little time off after the birth of her daughter to assess her career path. When she went back to work, it had to be something meaningful. She was offered a job at the International Wolf Center in northern Minnesota, but declined, not wanting to leave the Twin Cities area. They were so impressed, however, they created a different job for her -- on her own turf. She directed publications and promotions focusing on environmental education for

three years in the Twin Cities before taking a job as editor-in-chief at GW McNamara Publications, publishers of Window Fashions magazine. Back in the realm of interior design, she built a publication that was approximately 60 pages monthly into a book averaging from 120 to 300 pages each month. Plus, shortly after her arrival, she launched a start-up publication, Fine Furniture International and later coordinated the addition of a purchased magazine and its staff, The WallPaper. Adding staff, building website content, hosting trade events, juggling million dollar budgets, traveling internationally, Kathleen worked for six years as director of publications and also remained editor-in-chief of Window Fashions. In those six years, her staff grew from two to 20. And then she left to form her own company, Chemistry Creative, specializing in writing, graphic design and editorial for small to mid-range companies. Throughout her seven years as sole proprietor, she authored and designed three books for Charles Randall, Inc.: Dream Floors: Hundreds of Design Ideas for Every Kind of Floor (2005); Dream Windows: Historical Pespectives, Classic Designs, Contemporary Creations (2005); The Complete Home Decorating Idea Book (2007) and The Window Decorating Book (2009). In addition, she has penned a monthly trend column for Draperies & Window Coverings magazine, as well as articles for Experience Life! and Today's Creative Home Arts magazines; has written lectures for the School of Communication Art; wrote copy for Tapestria, a fabric company; edited and wrote for The Princeton Review and Leapfrog Software; designed four books; edited a variety of fiction and non-fiction work; coached aspiring writers and was instrumental in the launch of a consumer publication, Solo-ing magazine (2007), including serving as its editor-in-chief. She has completed one fiction novel, Misfit, which was represented by Ron Laitsch of Authentic Creations Literary Agency; has one screenplay completed and is mulling around a couple of other ideas for future nonfiction (and fiction) projects. You can view Ms. Stoehr's website on the Minnesota artist's website at mnartists.org/artistHome.do?rid=8686. She currently lives in Minneapolis, MN, and, if you knew her at all, you would probably be able to guess where she is sitting right now. That's right. In front of her computer. Or is she walking her dog? Or at the theatre? A music event? Reading a new book? Whatever the case, it's always purposeful.
