Introduction
Traditionalemergencylightingandexitsignshavebeenprimarilyfocusedonguidingthe interioroccupantsofabuildingtothenearestexitintheeventofanemergency.Today, anadditionalemphasisisbeingplacedonnotonlygettingoccupantstotheexitofthe building,butalsogettingthemtoandalongapathofsafetyoncetheyareoutofthe building. TheNFPALifeSafetyCoderequiresemergencyilluminationofthepathofegressaway fromthebuilding(exitdischarge)andleading"to a public way."Thesafepublicarea or"public way"isdescribedinthecodeas"a street or alley or other similar parcel of land essentially open to the outside air deeded dedicated or otherwise permanently appropriated to the public for public use and having a clear width and height..." Outdooremergencyapplicationsfallintotwocategories:damplocationorwetlocation. AccordingtoChapter1,Article100ofthe2002NationalElectricCode,damplocations include"...partially protected locations under canopies, marquees, roofed open porches, and like locations..."whereaswetlocationispartiallydefinedas"...locations subject to saturation with water or other liquids, such as vehicle washing areas; and in unprotected locations exposed to weather." LithoniaLightingispleasedtoprovidethisOutdoorEmergencyLightingApplication Guideasaresourcetoidentifyourcompletelistofsolutionsforoutdooremergency applications,includingbothnormally onoutdoorfixturesthatswitchtoemergencymode whenneeded,andnormally offemergencyfixturesthatareapprovedforoutdooruse.

Power Sources
Traditionalbuilding-mountedfixturesongeneratorsorACpowersystemscanbeusedforboth normalandemergencyegresslighting.AnemergencygeneratorprovidescontinuousACpowerto thefixturesontheemergencycircuit(s)duringlossofnormalpower.AnACpowersystemutilizes batteriesandconvertsDCtoACpowerforthefixturesontheemergencycircuit(s)duringlossof normalpower. Whenusingincandescentorfluorescentlampsforemergencyegresslighting,anemergency generatororinterruptibleACpowersystemcanbeused.IfusingHIDlamps,afast-transferAC powersystemoruninteruptiblepowersupplyisrequiredtoswitchthepowerquicklyenoughso thattheHIDlampdoesnotloseitsarcandextinguish.

Integral Emergency Battery Pack ELDW/ELDWC
TheELDW(ELDWCforcoldweatherapplications)optionisanintegralemergencybatterypack thatoperatescompactfluorescentlampsatareducedlumenoutputforaminimumof90minutes. WhenACpowerisrestored,theELDWreturnstochargingmodeandwillbecompletelyrechargedin24hours. WiththeELDWoption,anindicatorlightandtestswitchareprovidedwiththefixture.WhenAC powerisapplied,theindicatorlightisilluminated.Thetestswitchprovidesameansforchecking theemergencybatterypacktomakesurethatitisfunctioningproperly.Althoughnoroutine maintenanceisrequiredtokeeptheemergencybatterypackfunctional,itisrequiredthatthe emergencyoperationbetestedat30-dayintervalsforaminimumof30secondsandthata90minutedischargetestbecompletedonceayear.ELDWR,aremoteversionofthisbatterypack, isalsoavailablewiththeArchitecturalSconceSeries. TheELDWandELDWRoptionsareULListedforwetlocationsandareratedtooperatein ambienttemperaturesaslowas32oF(0oC).Thesebatterypackshavealifeexpectancyofseven to10years.TheELDWCoptionoperatesinambienttemperaturesaslowas-4°F(-20°C).

Toaddressthegrowingneedof emergencyegresslightingandtherequirementsof theLifeSafteyCode,LithoniaLightingnowprovides theDC12emergencycircuitoption.Thisfeatureequips thefixturewithoneortwo12-voltDCbayonetbase 20-wattor35-wattMR11lamps.Low-voltagelamps, poweredbyanexternalbatterysource,areprovided inadditiontotheHIDlampsandwillsupplyillumination alongthepathofegresswhenthereisapower interruptiontotheprimaryHIDsource. Inatypicalapplication,theemergency12-volt powerwouldbesuppliedfromabatterysource externaltothefixture,usuallylocatedwithinthe buildingbyanemergencylightingunitsuchas Lithonia'sIndura®orTitan®Series(refer to diagram A above right).Labeledleadsthat connecttothebatterysourceareprovided.
