Why Do We Give to God?

(Key Scripture Reference: 2 Corinthians 9:7, Matthew 22:37, 6:33) (Scripture Reference: 1 Peter 2:9, Matthew 6:25-33, Psalms 24:1, John 3:16, 1 Peter 2:9, 2 Corinthians 3:17, Romans 8:9, John 14:17, Matthew 6:25-33, Matthew 5:45, Psalms 24:1, 1 Corinthians 8:3, Genesis 4:2 10, Genesis 4:4, Genesis 4:7, Mark 12:41-44, Matthew 22:37) Many people have tried to teach on why we give tithes and offerings to God. I have heard things like because it is required, because God needs your money, because God will not give you anything unless you give him something, we will be cursed for not giving, or that we give to be accepted by God. God's Acceptance for Us The simple fact that Jesus died on the cross for us provides us with many benefits, which includes unconditional acceptance and adoption into to the royal family as a child of God (1 Peter 2:9). God loves us so much that he sent his only son to die on the cross for our sins (John 3:16). In the bible, I have found a scripture that states that Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law. It also says that where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty and that God spirits dwells within us if we accept him as Lord, so therefore because his spirit dwells within us we have liberty from the curse of the law (2 Corinthians 3:17, Romans 8:9, John 14:17). God's Provision for Us I believe that God is our Father and that he will provide for us. The bible says that he takes care of the sparrow who neither sows nor reaps nor has barns to store it in, but yet and still God provides for them. The bible also tells us that God takes care of the sparrow, who does not give and that we are more precious than a sparrow to him, so therefore he provisions is not based on giving gifts to him (Matthew 6:25-33). The simple fact that the bible says that the rain falls on the just and the unjust tells us that even the wicked receive sunshine and rain (Matthew 5:45). Believe Reason that We Give I believe the reason that we give to God is because he is God, he is our Father, and he loves us unconditionally (John 3:16). Just like a parent with a newborn child, what can that child give to their parents? At this point in the child's life there is not really much that they can give to their parents except their love.

It is the same way with God. The bible says that the earth and everything in the earth is Gods even our own lives are God's (Psalms 24:1). The only thing that we can give to God that he does not already have is our love. The amazing thing about loving God is that God knows who we are (1 Corinthians 8:3). That does not mean that he does not already know who we are it just means that we will have favor with him, because of our love towards him. If we think about it long enough we can all come up with list of people who when we are doing something really important and do not want to be disturbed by anyone, we would let them disturb us. It is the same way with God if you love him it changes your relationship with him in the sense that we have a closer relationship with him. Therefore, we should not give to God to receive anything in return, because it is required, or to be accepted. We should always give to God because he is our Father. Just like a relationship with anybody that you love. You give gifts to them, because you love them not for things in return. This is the same reason that we should give to God, because we love him and want to express our love to him with gifts. Where Do We Give God is not physically present here on earth to give the gifts directly to him, so I give my gifts wherever God leads me to give them. Sometimes it is a church, ministry, organization, or a person. It does not really matter where we give the gifts instead the most important thing is how we give the gifts. The bible tells us to give with a cheerful heart not out of obligation or in grief (2 Corinthians 9:7). I have heard people say things like God loves one type of gift over another type of gift or the amount of a gift is the most important thing to God. I do not believe this is true, I believe that God looks at the condition of our hearts when we give to him. Take for example what happen with Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:2 10). I have heard people say that it was because Abel had sheep and Cain only had crops. This is just not true, because if it was because of their occupations then what about Jesus who was a carpenter or the disciples who were fishermen. I believe it was because Abel thought about God first and gave him a gift from his heart (Genesis 4:4).

The bible says that after Cain gave his gift to God, he told Cain if he did well he will also be accepted and if not sin was lying in wait for him (Genesis 4:7). Cain did not give God a gift from his first instead; he just gave him a gift. Even though God gave Cain an opportunity to get his heart right, so that he could also be accepted, he chose to get rid of Abel instead. Cain decided to kill his brother instead of getting his heart right when giving gifts to God. Alternatively, take for example, when Jesus was watching people putting money into the treasury. Many people gave who were rich, but Jesus recognized the poor widow not because of how little she gave, but instead he recognized her because she gave out of her livelihood and had placed God before her own needs (Mark 12:41-44). There are many examples in the bible where individuals gave gifts to God and each time what was most important was their hearts when they gave not the type or size of their gifts. Three things that we need to remember. First, remember to love the Lord God with all of our heart, soul, and mind. Secondly, remember to seek God first in all things and in everything that we do (Matthew 22:37, 6:33). Lastly, remember to give to God not for any other reason than because he is God and he loves us.
