The Heartland Chapter: A Time to Reflect and Celebrate

As we look back on the events of the past year, we pause to celebrate the lives of those that were touched by our volunteers, our staff and financial donors. Without their commitment and dedication, our chapter would not be able to provide emergency and disaster services, provide training courses or help the community become more safe and better prepared for disasters of any kind. We celebrate our chapter's ability and willingness to answer a nation-wide call for help when Hurricane Katrina pounded the Gulf Coast. The Heartland Chapter was proud to be a part of the effort and was prepared and ready to help. We celebrate our ability to deploy three paid staff and 47 volunteers to support the Katrina relief effort either in the affected areas, or in service areas. During this time, the chapter activated the Regional Call Center Network and handled more than 18,000 calls and trained 500 new volunteers. Along with several community partners, we provided a full service shelter for 165 evacuees and provided assistance to another 1,400 evacuees who came directly to the chapter for Red Cross services. We celebrate our strength. Our staff remained strong and ready to meet the continued needs of many here in the Heartland. Locally, the chapter assisted more than 800 people affected by single-family fires and other disasters and overall, touched more than 107,000 people throughout the year. We celebrate our volunteers who logged more than 80,000 hours of service for disaster response, instructors, governance, administrative functions and blood drives. We celebrate the heroics of our 13 Heartland Heroes who unselfishly reached out to save a life, lend a hand or offer guidance and refuge for the youth of our community. We applaud our staff and educators who teach lifesaving skills such as CPR, first aid and AED training. These are the very skills that empowered our heroes to rush to the aid of someone in distress without hesitation. We celebrate the families whose loved ones serve our country in far reaches of the world. The Heartland Chapter provided emergency communications assistance to more than 830 military families. A total of 672 live video messages were sent and 42 tracing/messaging requests received responses. We celebrate our partnership with the Omaha Fire Department as we work together to make homes safer through the Sniffin' out Smoke (SOS) program that offers fire safety education and free smoke detectors to those who do not have one in their home. We celebrate and thank our donors for helping us achieve a balanced revenue expense budget for the first time in eight years. As we move forward, we will focus our efforts on maintaining financial strength to ensure our ability to continue to provide services, comfort and care for those who reach out to us during an unforeseen emergency or disaster. We will remain strong in our commitment to always "be there."
