EcoAlign Releases Report from Consumer Awareness Survey on Smart Grid October 14, 2009 - EcoAlign, LLC., a marketing research company, released the results of sixth EcoPinion Survey to test consumer awareness and acceptance of terms connected to Energy conservation, Clean energy and Smart Grid. The report confirms that although consumers have positive associations with commonly used terms but there still exist the gap between messaging and consumer behaviour. Check the report here eMeter Announces MDUS Integration October 14, 2009 - eMeter Corporation announced the availability of real-time integration between its EnergyIP, a meter data management software, and SAP for Utilities. eMeter's solution provides interoperability with any Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Meter Data Unification and Synchronisation (MDUS) System. eMeter is the original strategic vendor members of SAP Lighthouse Council. SAP Announces the Adoption of SAP AMI Integration for Utilities October 14, 2009 - SAP AG announced that utilities across the globe are adoption SAP AMI Integration for Utilities software to integrate metering processes with backend systems. The utilities who are working with SAP includes Consumers Energy (US), Middle Tennessee Electric (US), Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative (US) and SP AusNet (Australia). SAP made this announcement at 7th International SAP Utilities Conference. ComEd Smart Metering Pilot Approved by Illinois Commission October 14, 2009 - Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) announced that it has received approval from Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) for its one-year $69 million Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) pilot. The pilot will start in November and around 131,000 customers will receive Smart meters. If ComEd's application for $175 million in federal grants is approved, the size of pilot will increase to 310,000 customers.

GE Energy Invests in Tendril Networks October 14, 2009 - GE Energy Financial Services announced that it is making an equity investment in Tendril Networks, Inc., a smart grid technology provider. GE already have appliances partnership with Tendril. Vectren Seeks Regulatory Approval for Smart Grid Project October 14, 2009 - Vectren Corporation, a Indiana-based utility, filed for regulatory approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to move forward with Smart Grid project should US DOE approves federal grants. Vectren has already requested US DOE for $45 million in federal funds. US DOE Earmarks $5 Million for ComEd Solar Energy Pilot October 13, 2009 - US Department of Energy announced that ComEd could receive upto $5 million in federal funds for its one-year Smart Grid solar pilot. ComEd's solar pilot would include nearly 200 customers and these customers will receive solar photovoltaic systems, storage capacity and smart meters. Pacific Controls Launches Smart Energy Meters October 13, 2009 - Pacific Controls Systems LLC announced a range of Smart Energy Meters. Pacific Controls also provides brower-based energy monitoring and targeting software. Microsoft Launches Software Architecture for Utilities October 13, 2009 - Microsoft Corp. announced its Smart Energy Reference Architecture (SERA) based on cost-effective Microsoft platform for the development of 'integrated utilities of the future'. Microsoft SERA has been endorsed by a number of global solution providers and Microsoft Gold Certified Partners supporting SERA include Accenture, Alstom Power, AREVA, ESRI, Itron Inc. and OSIsoft Inc. Tres Amigas Project Unveiled as US' Renewables Energy Hub October 13, 2009 - New Mexico Governor unveiled Tres Amigas Project which will be first system to connect US' three power grids and will create US' first renewable energy trading hub. The project will use latest technologies including DC superconductor power cables from American Superconductor (AMSC), HVDC converters and energy storage systems. Tres Amigas will enable trading and distribution of renewable energy across the regions through interconnection between Western Interconnect, Eastern Interconnect and Texas Interconnect. Bell Labs and Korean Institute to Collaborate on Smart Grid October 13, 2009 - Alcatel-Lucent announced that its research arm, Bell Labs, and the Korean institute, Gachon Energy Research Institute (GERI) have entered into an agreement to design and develop technologies and solutions for next generation Smart Grid. The research program is called Grid 2.0 and will develop communications technologies, comprehensive security systems and methods for reliable information flow among grid elements. City of Austin Selects IBM for Customer Billing System October 13, 2009 - IBM announced that it has entered into an eight year contract with City of Austin to install and manage utility services billing system. The new billing system will support electric, water and waste-collection operations and will provide a single point of contact for all customers. The new billing system will also lay groundwork for the development of Smart grid.

Ambient Announces EDC Module for Migration to Smart Grid October 12, 2009 - Ambient Corporation and Itron Inc. announces the development of Ambient EDC module to provide efficient migration path from legacy automatic meter reading (AMR) to advanced smart metering. EDC is an optional module integrated into Ambient Smart Grid nodes and will collect data from surrounding ERT based meters. European Commission Calls ICT Sector for Energy Efficiency and Low-Carbon Economy October 9, 2009 - European Commission called on Europe's Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to outline plans by 2011 to become 20% more efficient by 2015. European Commission also asked the EU countries to adopt ICT based solutions such as Smart grid and Smart metering to improve energy efficiency. EU member countries have till 2010 to outline plan and agree on common specifications for Smart metering. Burns & McDonnell Assisted Utilities on US DOE Smart Grid Grant Applications October 9, 2009 - Burns & McDonnell announced that it has provided consultation services to five of the utilities client on their Smart Grid Grant applications for a combined grant amount of $230.1 million. The five utilities are PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, Hoosier Energy, Kansas City Board of Public Utilities, Lincoln Electric System and Nashville Electric Services. Taipower Begins Smart Metering October 9, 2009 - Taiwan Power Co., an electric utility in Taiwan, has begun installation of smart electric meters for customers with large electricity consumption. Taipower will also be working on Smart Grid to improve service quality. UK DECC Selects Accenture for Strategic Support on Smart Grid October 8, 2009 - UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has selected Accenture to provide strategic consulting on planning and implementation of Smart Grid in UK. Accenture will analyse the electricity network and market structure and will advise DECC on readiness to adopt technology and services. Accenture will also assist DECC in preparing business case for financial viability and benefits. eMeter Demonstrates EnergyIP Scalable for 20 Million Meters October 8, 2009 - eMeter Corporation announced successful benchmark testing of EnergyIP for 20 million smart meters which is over four times the scale of any other industry benchmark in same category. The benchmarking testing was done at IBM Innovation Centre, California with a full multitenancy configuration and the most-complex extended enterprise scenario. Defidev, Elster and DS2 Unveils New IP-based Smart Meters October 8, 2009 - Defidev, a powerline solutions provider, unveiled a new generation of IP based electricity smart meters developed jointly with Elster and integrated over DS2 PLC technology. The new smart meters will communicate through Defidev's Phoenix Gateway over high bandwidth powerline technology from DS2 and is expected to reduce captial and operational cost of AMI. SAIC Forms Strategic Alliance with BPLG on Smart Grid October 8, 2009 - Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) announced that it has formed a strategic alliance with BPL Global Ltd. to provide Smart Grid solutions and services for utilities. of alliance, SAIC will have a $10 million minority stake in BPLG. BPLG's solutions include Power SG suite, a SOA based solution, that addresses energy vale chain from substation to end consumers. Echelon Announces Eaton as Value-Added Reseller October 7, 2009 - Echelon Corporation announced that Eaton Corporation has become a value-added reseller of Echelon's NES System and Eaton will incorporate its home automation product line with the NES System. CURRENT Group Demonstrates Interoperable PRIME Smart Metering System October 7, 2009 - CURRENT Group, LLC announced that it has successfully demonstrated the interoperability of its open metering system developed under PRIME Alliance for European market. Objective of PRIME initiative is to design standards that allow meter vendors and meter collector providers to integrate through open communications solutions. Alcatel-Lucent Signs Agreement with German Utility for Smart Metering October 7, 2009 - Alcatel-Lucent announced that it has signed an agreement with Stadtwerke Pasewalk GmbH, a German municipal utility, to provide Smart meter operation services. Alcatel-Lucent will work with its partners: Vodafone Germany, DIEHL Energy Solutions and SIV AG. Vodafone Germany will provide machine-to-machine communication solutions, DIEHL will deliver the smart meter and systems and SIV AG will provide ERP system kVASy® for billing. Oncor and Landis+Gyr Reaches Milestone in Smart Meter Deployment October 7, 2009 - Oncor, a Texas based utility, and Landis+gyr, a Smart Grid technology provider, announced that a major milestone has been reached in advanced meter rollout programme with the deployment of more than 300,000 smart meters in Dallas metro area. Oncor plans to install 700,000 smart meters by end of this year and nearly 3 million smart meters by 2012. Google Announces PowerMeter Without Need of Smart Meters October 6, 2009 - Google announced The Energy Detective (TED 5000) as its first official device partner for its PowerMeter, a home energy management solution. TED 5000 is an energy monitor device from Energy, Inc. and it measures electric usage in real-time and will work with Google's PowerMeter without a need of Smart meters. Alcatel-Lucent Starts Smart Metering Pilot in Austria October 6, 2009 - Alcatel-Lucent announced that it has started a Smart metering pilot with KELAG Netz GmbH, an Austrian electricity and gas network operator. Alcatel-Lucent will provide its end-to-end smart metering solution covering nearly 550 premises and will include its Operational/Business Support Systems (OSS/BSS).

Texas Instruments Announces New MCUs for Advanced Metering October 6, 2009 - Texas Instruments announced 16 new ultra-low power microcontrollers (MCU) for electricity and gas metering. eMeter Announces SmartStart October 6, 2009 - eMeter Corporation announced SmartStartTM for utilities to get quickly started on meter-to-cash and consumer enagagement functions in as little as 12 weeks. SmartStart provides accelerated implementation of preconfigured eMeter's EnergyIP and EnergyEngage. Freescale Introduces Advanced Meter Reference Design October 6, 2009 - Freescale Semiconductor introduces a turnkey advanced metering reference design based on advanced Freescale's ColdFire microcontroller unit (MCU). The polyphase reference design is a cost-optimized implementation of a single-phase or three-phase smart electrical meter and the reference design contains necessary hardware and software details for development of smart meters. Masdar City and GE Partners on Smart Appliance Pilot October 5, 2009 - Masdar City and GE Consumer & Industrial announced a first of its kind Smart appliance program for the residents of world's first carbon neutral city being built in Ab Dhabi. The pilot will run over for 2 years and will test how GE Smart appliances and Home Energy Manager (HEM) can lower power demand. STMicroelectronics Selected for Smart Meters in Spain October 5, 2009 - STMicroelectronics announced that it has been selected by Enel, Italy to provide semiconductor components for new electric meters for distribution in Spain. Endesa, the largest electric supplier in Spain, will deploy the new electric meters as part of its Smart meter roll-out program replacing 13 million meters by 2015. STM will provide a complete smart-metering solution that includes a power-line communication System-on-Chip (ST758x) part of 32-bit microcontroller (STM32) and an innovative power-supply device. Siemens to Provide Smart Metering Solution for Umetriq October 2, 2009 - Siemens Energy announced that it will provide Smart metering solution to Berlinbased Umetriq Entwicklungs-GmbH for metering services provider and meter opertor in Germany. Siemens will provide Transaction Server for meter data acquisition and EnergyIP for advanced meter data management system. Sierra Wireless and Radiocrafts Introduces Communications Gateway for Smart Meters October 1, 2009 - Sierra Wireless and Radiocrafts AS announced the launch of an Open Metering System compliant GSM/GPRS/EDGE gateway for Smart metering. The new gateway is based on Sierra Wireless' Fastrack Supreme, a programmable application hosting platform and has embedded Wireless M-Bus and ZigBee modules. Arcadian Networks Announces Network Management Software October 1, 2009 - Arcadian Networks announces new tool as part of new AE11g SMART Grid Gateway SeriesTM for managing complex interconnections of applications, devices and software in LAN and WAN networks for Utilities.

EnOcean Smart Grid Solutions Validated in PG&E Study October 1, 2009 - EnOcean, a provider of wireless sensor technology, announced that its wireless lighting controls, manufactured by Echoflex Solutions, has demonstrated significant energy for Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) savings by shedding peak loads during Demand Response events. Echoflex system reduced lighting levels within seconds of receiving PG&E utility Demand Response signals.
