TANGO COMES CLOSER TO BEING DESIGNATED "WORLD HERITAGE" Tango has come a step closer to becoming World Heritage. Buenos Aires and Montevideo had made a joint presentation to UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) this past November. Along with another 114 candidates, tango met the criteria for integration into the representative list of nonphysical things classified as World Heritage, explained the Expert Committee. The final decision will be made next September in the United Arab Emirates when the State Committee meets. A recently released document justifies the possibility of tango being designated World Heritage as it is one of the people of the River Plate's main expressions of identity. And, they explain, its distinction will commit both Buenos Aires and Montevideo to preserving its origins through different actions, focusing on the milongas of River Plate.

BOOK ABOUT PIAZZOLLA HONORED The Argentinean Chamber of Publications awarded Hermenegildo Sábat's "Que No Se Entere Piazzolla ("Don't Let Piazzolla Find Out") (2008) as last year's best book. Sábat's book, published by the Universidad Nacional de Quilmes (Quilmes National University) and the Economic Culture Fund, made its mark in both the categories of "art, design, architecture and photography" and in the general category.

In "Que No Se Entere Piazzolla," Sábat illustrates and writes brief passages of a fake biography (with traces of his true biography) of the fantastic composer from Mar de Plata, from his difficult childhood in Harlem, New York, where he met Gardel, to his emblematic concert at the Teatro Colón (Colón Theater) in 1972.

The book compiles forty-one drawings inspired by the great bandoneón player and composer, from childhood drawings to others which recreate the look of old photographs. Among these are one which miraculously appears to have survived the airline accident in which Carlos Gardel died as well as some shots from the movie, "El día que me quieras," in which Piazzolla appeared as a child playing a newspaper seller alongside Gardel.

"MALEVO", ¿LA PALABRA MÁS LINDA DEL ESPAÑOL? "MALEVO"- THE SPANISH LANGUAGE'S MOST BEAUTIFUL WORD? Although they may never have seen one in their lives, thousands of internet users throughout the world have chosen the "Argentin-ism" "malevo" ("bad guy") as their favorite word from the Spanish language. The survey was undertaken as one of the activities related to the worldwide celebration of Spanish Day (on June 20th). From the Instituto Cervantes (Cervantes Institute), which organized the survey's results, it was notable that more than half of the participating voters did so from countries where Spanish is not the official language. The survey was conducted on the webpage, www.eldia.es, where more than 47,000 users voted on their favorite and proposed new words in the "Invent One" section. And, even though the official selection went hand in hand with sweetness and happiness (the terms were: "abrazo" (embrace), "amor" (love), "añoranza" (yearning), "bailar" (to dance), "beso" (kiss), "chévere" ("cool"), "chocolate", "fiesta" (party), "hola" (hello) and "sonrisa" (smile)), the popular choice leaned toward the slightly harsher term, "malevo." "It's a word from tango and I like partner dancing," said one voter; "It represents reverence toward nerve, the mystery underneath the fedora," added another.

MADRESELVA (Tango - 1931)

Music by: Francisco Canaro Lyrics by: Luis Cesar Amadori Old wall of the suburb, your shadow was my partner. From my childhood without splendor, your honeysuckle was my friend. When trembling, my first love with its hope kisses my soul, I, next to you, pure and happy, was singing my first confession. Blooming honeysuckles that saw me being born and on the old wall surprised my love. Your humble caress is like the affection, the first one and dear, that I feel for him. Blooming honeysuckles that go on climbing, your arm is firm and sweet like his. If every year your flowers bloom again, don't let die my first love. The years went by and so did my disillusions I come to confide in you my old wall. This way I learned that one has to fake to live a decent life, that love and faith are lies and people laughs at pain... Today that life has punished me and has taught me its bitter creed, old wall, with emotion I come closer to you and I ask you like yesterday. Blooming honeysucklesthat saw me being born and on the old wall surprised my love. Your humble caress is like the affection, the first one and dear, that I never forgot. Blooming honeysuckles that go on climbing, your arm is firm and sweet like his. If every year your flowers bloom again, how come my first love can't do the same?

MADRESELVA (Tango - 1931)

By Jean Migdal - What does it take to get close to 1,000 Tangueros and Tango enthusiasts out to a single event? An inspiring location, instructions for beginner dancers taking their first tentative steps and of course, great music. Those were the elements that brought dancers and spectators together from far and wide to the May event at the Winter Garden, a soaring 10 story high glass vaulted atrium, in NYC's World Financial Center. Whether dancing to the rhythms of DJ Richard Lipkin or Hector Del Curto's Eternal Tango Orchestra, the Winter Garden offered floor to ceiling vistas of the Hudson Harbor that created the ambiance of dancing under a starry sky. Co-produced by Steve Beltzer and Jean Migdal, the event was made possible by arts>World Financial Center and was sponsored by American Express, Battery Park City Authority, Brookfield Properties and Merrill Lynch and was free of charge to all. Hector Del Curto and his full, ten-piece Eternal Tango Orchestra took the stage before a dance floor filled with hundreds of dancers and delivered an impassioned and electric performance featuring Piazzolla and Pugliese inspired compositions. beginner dancers, experienced Tangueros danced underneath the 45-foot tall palm trees. The orchestra's music captivated dancers and spectators alike. The Winter Garden was transformed into a grand ballroom of Tango for the evening. The event was well received and co-producers, Steve and Jean hope to bring the NYC tango community future events and expressed their special thanks to the staff of arts>World Financial Center, Debra Simon, Karen Kitchen, Elysa Marden, Allan Abrams, Miguel Lopez, Kris Myrseth, Jenna Parks, Helen Wall and Dalis Wilson, all of whom played an important part in this successful event.

Being gay, why did you feel attracted to such a heterosexual environment? Well, first of all, I fell in love with the music and the embrace of the tango. I read early on that in the beginning, the men danced with men and then they danced in the brothels. My first lover was a prostitute and I know something about the "women in brothels". So, right away I found some gay and lesbian history in the tango and, even though I was in the minority, I felt I had a place there. Also, I came out when I was 15 in 1973. The first lesbian bars I went to were tough, with an air of excitement and danger. We were fem and butch- in dresses or handsome suits and ties. Oh, and there were drag queens dressed to the nines. I loved this gender play and commitment to a role. We were elegant and retro - posturing, drinking, dancing with each other and sometimes fights broke out. After some decades, the lesbian fashion became more garden variety and androgynous. The dancing became freestyle and I found that boring. I loved discovering the milongas and their randy and random couplings with strangers. That seemed very gay to me and the style reminded me of the good old queer days when "men were men and women were women". What were your teachers' reaction when you wanted to learn how to lead? My teachers were great! They encouraged me to learn to follow first, at least for a year, and then promised to teach me to lead. This was brilliant as it ultimately made me a better leader and it allowed me to bond with the machos in the beginning. I don't think I would have made it in this scene otherwise. For the first two years, I only followed mostly with men. Women did not lead unless they were teachers and they only led in classes or at the end of the milongas. Do you find that other gay women prefer to lead or follow? I think it depends if they are butch or fem and if they want to explore their masculine or feminine side. I got a lot out of learning to follow, and for two years I explored my feminine side. It was a very beautiful experience and without tango I doubt I would have gone there. Have you ever visited Buenos Aires? If

une 28, 2009 will mark the 40th anniversary of the historic Stonewall Riots that occurred in Greenwich Village, New York. Many cite the riots as the birth of the Gay Rights Movement in the United States. From June 1969 until June 1970, gays and lesbians in New York City radicalized in an unprecedented way, founding several activist groups that created a new vision for Gay Liberation. We wanted to remember this historic and pivotal moment with Lexa Rosean, ReporTango's friend, proud member of the NY tango community for 14 years and, according to her therapist "responsible for giving hundreds of women their first lesbian experience" through the tango embrace. Reportango: How did you get into tango? Lexa Rosean: In 1995, I went to see a tango show of Tango Mujer, and after the show I was invited to my first milonga. I was mesmerized by all of it and got hooked immediately. Of course, because of the all female show, I thought that women danced with each other and I had no idea at all about the macho, strictly heterosexual world I was entering into.

¿Cómo comenzaste a bailar tango?

so, how did the BA tango community react to you? It took me seven or eight years before I traveled to BA because so many people said: "Ah Lexa, you are a great leader but you can't do that in BA." When I finally went, I had an amazing time. First, I danced at La Marshall. I loved it but there didn't seem to be any lesbians there! The next night, I went to Niño Bien and I made the cabeceo with success. Only the Italian and Argentine women would agree to dance with me, but honestly, who else would I want to dance with! Also, to my surprise and delight, I found that all the old milongueros were friendly to me. They eso'd me on to lead at Salon Canning and were anxious to teach me more. How did the Argentine Tango stars visiting NY react to you? I had my best experience with Carlos Gavito. He was very supportive even though I understand he didn't approve of women leading. Gavito told me that I led with my macha and he was right. I think Guillermina was a little nervous the first time I came to take a lesson with her. I admit that I was intimidated because she is such a brilliant a dancer. But once we got to know each other, everything was fine and I appreciate her openness and many others for sharing their tango wisdom with me without judgment. Do men see you as a competitor at the milongas? Are they intimidated by you? There is healthy competition and unhealthy competition. Good dancers and confident men are not intimidated by me. Maybe that is also because they held me in their arms for my first two years when I was a follower. I even slept with a lucky few of them. When I began to lead well, there were some negative reactions. In fact, they threw me out of Danel's milonga because some guys complained. A good friend of mine, an old Porteño, questioned Danel: "Who complains? Real milongueros? Or ones who don't dance well and gave up the lessons? The women don't want to dance with them even if Lexa is not there." So they let me stay and continue to lead. Once I got in a fist fight at La Belle Epoque with Omar Vega because we were sleeping with the same mina. But we remained amigos and he was one of my greatest teachers and

that was another sort of competition. Can you describe the gay tango community in NY? The what! Perhaps NYC is such a special place that we don't need a gay tango community. That's the only positive reason I can come up with for why all the gay milongas fold in NY. Here we all like to dance together. One night at my milonga, there were 3 couples left dancing "la ultima". Two men, two women, and a man and a woman. That was a perfect moment for me. We are an international

community and we should have all our beautiful colors shining together on the same dance floors. I mean, do we need to have an exclusively African American milonga? Or Asian? Or anything else for that matter! That doesn't mean I don't encourage gays and lesbians to dance tango. I absolutely do and I like to think that I am personally responsible for paving the road for other same sex couples to feel comfortable dancing in ANY milonga in NYC and one day, perhaps, the world. As my analyst once said, "Lexa, you are re-

Incluso he dormido con algunos afortunados.

They threw me out of Danel's milonga because some guys complained...

sponsible for giving hundreds of women their first lesbian experience." And only by holding them in a tango embrace. Argentine tango has suffered suppression just like the gay movement. I feel there is something simpatico between them and maybe that's why Buenos Aires was the first city to have a successful and ongoing gay milonga. I would not be living the life I lead if not for that historic moment of the Stonewall Riots. It is important to have a safe space for gays and lesbians to dance tango. It was often lonely for me being in such a heterosexual environment, but it was also a relief to know that most of my dance partners were not only potential lovers. For most of us, the milonga is so much more than just a dating scene, but I can understand why people would want to dance with those of the same sexual preference in order to broaden their sphere of possible romantic partners. As far as I am concerned, a room full of dance partners that are potentially available for "more", can just as easily translate into that many more wrong choices to make. True love is as rare and elusive as the perfect tango. I may have thought many times that I had found it, but in the 14 years I have been dancing tango, it has truly happened only once.

Tango Stars d

CANCER Feliz cumpleaños! In this year your importance is increasing in the tango world. Everyone will be watching you. Obviously this is good or bad depending upon what activities you engage in. One thing is for sure your tango moves need to be at their best in the milongas. Over the summer you and your partner experience some restlessness and will need to change the scenery often. Best Milonga days: July 1, 6, 20, 21, 28 August 2, 16, 17, 25, 26 LEO Feliz Cumpleaños! You will have powerful allies this year and in the next two months try to wow them with your star quality to get some financial backing. A generous old milonguero is there to help you but only if you partner with him. In the bedroom, or on the dancefloor, or at the bank perhaps all three! Best Milonga days: July 3, 4, 8, 22, 23 August 1, 2, 6, 18, 19

VIRGO Your favorite drink is mate amargo. If you are not careful, your close embrace of all the bitterness of the tango will require you to make a trip to Buenos Aires to get work done on your furrowed brow and frown lines. A cheaper and safer option would be to dance a few sets of sweet valses and happy milongas to lift your face. Best Milonga days: July 6, 7, 11, 24, 25 August 2, 3, 7, 20, 21

LIBRA Looking for love? Of course that is your primary objective in tango and all your other walks of life. Your key to success is a plane ticket. The best lovers (and dancers) are waiting for you out of town. If you have children, travel in July, as they will demand your attention in August. Free agent Librans should also take off in July but leave your return ticket open ended as mag-

ic moments are sure to occur and you'll want to prolong this travel tanda as long as possible. Best Milonga days: July 8, 9, 14, 26, 27 August 5, 6, 10, 22, 23 SCORPIO The neighbors will complain about your loud tango music and you'll have to turn down the volume on your fun. But in August, Venus and Mars bless both your travel and your sex house and you'll feel free to make as much noise as you wish. Get ready for a hot and steamy tango retreat with a sexy partner. Best Milonga days: July 1, 2, 12, 16, 28, 29 August 7, 8, 12, 25, 26

personal consultation with me to start planning the first milonga in outer space. Best Milonga days: July 8, 9, 18, 19, 22 August 5, 6, 14, 15, 18 PISCES You maintain an authentically Argentine relationship with the tango. It has been your "dirty little secret" for a long time. Things are about to change as a family member tags along to the milongas with you and then prompts you to take an even more incredible step You will host an asado/milonga and actually dance tango in your home. (The guest list will of course be ultra exclusive.) Best Milonga days: July 11, 12, 20, 21, 24 August 7, 8, 16, 17, 20 ARIES The tango keeps you busy socially and it's time to do outreach. If you are an organizer, it's time to chitchat and be seen at all the important milongas to advertise your events. If you are a dancer, it's time to meet new partners or sign up for new workshops. In July, you will resent these activities and long to be relaxing at home. In August, you will absolutely love being in the public eye especially since you will see the success of your efforts. Best Milonga days: July 13, 14, 22, 23, 27 August 10, 11, 18, 19, 22 TAURUS Travel advisory for the bull. At worst, danger at best, delays and cancellations on long trips. You'll do best staying close to home. There is one mode of transportation that you will have success with and that is taxi dancing. This is a great way to earn some extra cash on the ronda and save for later on when the roads and runways clear for you. Best Milonga days: July 16, 17, 24, 25, 28 August 12, 13, 20, 21, 25

sideral.

SAGITTARIUS You have many dance partners (some strangers and some friends) and now the stars create flirtatious possibilities between you and them. Which one will tango `la ultima' with you? August reveals who will be sharing the morning coffee in bed with you on a regular basis. For the non-single Sag's - expect some interesting and visceral visitors in your dreams. Best Milonga days: July 3, 4, 13, 18, 31 August 1, 10, 14, 27, 28

CAPRICORN Now that you are partnering with Pluto, you have become a revolutionary and want to create a Nuevo tango world. Chaos and change follow wherever you go. Many resist you and see your influence as damaging the community. They are right - it will - but eventually a lot of good work and positive change will come out of your efforts. Best Milonga days: July 6, 7, 16, 17, 20 August 2, 3, 13, 17, 29, 30 AQUARIUS You're convinced that you are about to dance your VERY LAST TANGO. And that's not because you've taken up swing. You're quite sure that we have reached the end of days and the world will shortly stop spinning round. In fact, you're so convinced that you are not even bothering to read this column because you don't believe we have a future! I would advise you to come for a

DOLINA KNOWS HIS TANGO

The journalist, author, writer and radio host, Alejando Dolina, was named a "Tango Scholar." At a public assembly which took place at the Salón de los Angelitos Horacio Ferrer ("Horacio Ferrer Salon of the Little Angels") at the World Tango Museum, Dolina received the diploma accrediting him with a Degree Honoris Causa granted by the Academia Nacional del Tango ("National Tango Academy"). Dolina, who hosts the popular program "La Venganza Será Terrible" ("Vengeance will be Terrible"), spearheaded a TV series called "Tangos del Bar del Infierno" ("Tangos from Hell's Bar"), a fictional show in which tango songs, some of which he created, were performed. From that program, several of the songs were rescued, listened to and edited onto CDs, becoming a sales phenomenon. Dolina's broad knowledge of the 2x4 and the winding paths of the history of Arrabalera music is reflected daily on his radio program where he takes advantage of the opportunity to acquaint the public with rarely broadcasted pieces.

Many Japanese people do not just like but are fanatics of tango. That feeling was lived out a few weeks ago in the Roppongi neighborhood of Tokyo, where an Argentinean tango group passed through as part of the celebration for the launching of the website, www.10tango.com, which already existed in Spanish and English and is now published in Japanese. The group of Artists who traveled to Japan was comprised by the dancer, Mora Godoy, the musician, José Colángelo and his orchestra, the singers, Jairo and Julia Zenko and Alfredo Casero, who stood out by singing Milongas Reas that Edmundo Rivero used to perform. For three days, the Japanese felt as if they were dancing on an Argentinean tiled floor and listening to and seeing artists from Buenos Aires on a River Plate stage. Sushi and tango: a great combination.

Sushi y tango, una buena combinación.
