World Containerboard Capacity Report - Excerpt

Overview

Below are the List of Tables and a sample table from the World Containerboard Capacity Report. This report includes current, planned and assumed capacity by mill for the global containerboard industry from 2001 to 2013. Capacities are listed by country, by mill and by grade. Capacity estimates are presented for mills that have claimed production of any of the containerboard grades: kraftliner, recycled (including nonwood) liner, semichemical corrugating medium and recycled (including nonwood) corrugating medium. In many cases, the production of recycled linerboard and medium are combined into a broader recycled containerboard category. The data for each mill or country is presented in thousand tonnes of annual capacity and is based on published information as well as our own estimates. In many parts of the world, containerboard is produced on small machines that also produce large numbers of other grades. This capacity is quite often listed under the broadest definition of packaging papers. In order to balance the containerboard and packaging capacity estimates for regions such as Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, we have included machines that produce most of the other packaging grades in this capacity report. This capacity report also lists a number of mills with no reported containerboard capacity between 1999 and 2011. These mills were included because they did produce measurable amounts of containerboard at some point during the last 10 years. Introduction

This report outlines historical and current containerboard capacities as well as projected capacity growth in all of the major regions of the world. Capacity estimates are presented for mills that have claimed production of any of the containerboard grades: kraftliner, recycled (including non-wood) liner, semichemical corrugating medium and recycled (including non-wood) medium. In many cases, the production of recycled linerboard and medium are combined into a broader recycled containerboard category. The total of the individual mill capacities were constrained to roughly equal the national capacity figures published by a number of sources. However, we set up a residual factor for many countries in order to balance these capacity estimates. This largely reflects the ability of many mills to produce a variety of packaging grades, and we have included these machines in our mill listings for regions such as Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. The residual category captures shifts in tonnage between the various packaging categories, which are often not reported (if at all) for a number of years. This report is updated and published annually. Sources include the American Forest and Paper Association, the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, the FAO branch of the United Nations, and various other international organizations. A table showing worldwide capacity totals as well as another that presents the top 20 (largest) producers of each grade lead the document. In the following few sections, mill-by-mill data is displayed for each of the various countries and regions. The mill-by-mill data is reproduced, segmented primarily by containerboard grade, in the next section. Where ownership of a particular mill is shared between firms, we have applied the following methodology: 100% of capacity is attributed to any firm holding greater than 50% ownership, otherwise mills with ownership divided among multiple paper companies are listed as separate entities. Finally, the last part summarizes
