Kawasaki's show-stopping ZX-14 proves that this OEM is all about custom.

arning: this custom ZX-14 may cause whiplash. When Kawasaki asked Roaring Toyz president Bob Fisher to build them a ZX-14 show bike, they asked for just one thing: it had to turn heads. Sixty days, a long list of mods and one 360-rear tire later, Fisher delivered. The rear tire is one of the things that Fisher knew would grab attention. The huge size called for a special wide tire swingarm setup. In this case, it's a Roaring Toyz King360 kit. "It's a real neat swingarm because all of the hardware is hidden on it," says Fisher. "It's got an inboard brake setup so the rear caliper sits between the centerline of the wheel and the sprocket, so the right side of the wheel is really open."

The open setup allows the 18"x13" Impaler wheel by Ego Trip to show through, letting the chrome take center stage. With such a wide load at the rear, the 4-2-1 polished stainless exhaust is the right fit and has the tough look that goes hand-inhand with the 14. The megaphone exhaust is another Roaring Toyz specialty, and since this bike is all about the show, Fisher chose to keep the rest of the engine stock. Two baffles let the rider pick what sound they want: loud, louder, or keep the neighbors awake. A bright purple paint scheme by Ryan Hathaway will probably have the neighbors looking already. "I've been wanting to do a bike in that color for about five years on a full custom. I've done my own stuff in that color," says Fisher. "Kawasaki

"

traditionally has done some green and purple colors so when we build bikes for them we try to stick with something that's semi-traditional for their motorcycles, and add the custom flair to it." The chrome bits, which were all plated by Sport Chrome, range from the usual, like the lowering kickstand and the clutch cover, to the unique: even the shock spring is chrome. Fisher left no detail unnoticed. He went to Performance Machine for the calipers and rotors, and chose to use their brake

and clutch master cylinders that were designed for HarleyDavidsons. The chrome Contour cylinders get rid of the stock plastic reservoirs. They wouldn't fit on the stock one-inch diameter handlebars, so Fisher had to make custom 7/8-inch bars, which he then fit with Roaring Toyz diamond billet grips. The stopping power of the PM braking system is augmented by purple steel-braided brake lines, which are custom pieces from H.E.L. The 14's lines stay clean with a Roaring Toyz side-mount license plate bracket, as well as flush-mount turn signals and an LED integrated brake light from Clear Alternatives. A successful debut at Daytona's Bike Week convinced the execs at Kawasaki that they are heading in the right direction. "On the ZX-14, it's a pretty recognizable body, it can't be confused with anything. So they said `go crazy and do whatever

"

you want with it,'" says Fisher. "They were happy with it. They judge their reaction by the consumers that are in the tent. That bike got a tremendous amount of attention at Bike Week." Now the 14 will continue to be a focal point of Kawasaki's display as it travels to events throughout the country this year. Myrtle Beach is the second stop on Kawasaki's calendar, so check out the bike for yourself. Just be ready for a stiff neck tomorrow.
