hISTorY Paris Venice is the only city of its kind in the world, glistening like a gem on a cushion of blue, she sparkles in the lagoon and has a magical atmosphere that is inexplicably festive. Venice is, and always has been, a city apart, a unique blend of West and East. Traces of Byzantium and more distant oriental influence appear everywhere. The harmonious architecture seems to have sprung uniformly from somewhere between the 12th and 16th centuries, its secretive walls and enticing balconies sparkling with flashes of water glimpsed through cracks and windows.
