1.1

Preface

General information

This manual will support you in using the non-contacting thermal measuring unit (abbreviation: BTM) in a safe, proper and economical way. If you observe the information contained in this manual, you will ­ increase the reliability and lifetime of the installation, ­ avoid any risks, ­ reduce repairs and downtimes.

This manual must ­ always be available at the BTM site, ­ be read and used by every person who works on the unit. The non-contacting thermal measuring unit is manufactured to the state of art and approved safety regulations. Nevertheless, the user's or third parties' life may be endangered or the machine or other material assets impaired in case of improper handling or use. Spare parts: Spare parts must comply with the requirements determined by Voith. This is guaranteed in case of original spare parts, as these are subject to regular quality control according to DIN ISO 9001 / EN 29001. Installation and/or use of non-original spare parts may negatively affect the constructively specified properties of the Non-contacting thermal measuring unit thus impairing the safety. Voith is not liable for damages resulting from use of non-original spare parts. Commissioning, maintenance and repair should only be effected by qualified and trained personnel.

Proper use

The non-contacting thermal measuring unit (BTM) is designed to measure the temperature on Voith turbo couplings without contact. Any different or exceeding use, such as e.g. for operating and application conditions not agreed upon, is not considered as proper use. Proper use also includes observance of the installation and operating manual. The manufacturer is not liable for any damages resulting from improper use and the risk is to be borne solely by the user.

2.2

General information with regard to dangerous situations

For all work performed on the non-contacting thermal measuring unit, please observe the local regulations for prevention of accidents as well as the regulations for installation of electrical equipment! DANGER! Working on the non-contacting thermal measuring unit: ­ Touching uncovered terminals, lines and equipment parts may cause fatal or most serious injuries! ­ In the event of a failure, even potential-free assemblies may carry a corresponding supply voltage during operation. Working on the turbo coupling: ­ For all work performed on the turbo coupling, ensure that the drive motor / engine and the driven machine have stopped running and startup is absolutely impossible! ­ Start to work only after the coupling has cooled down below 40°C, otherwise there is a risk of burns! ­ In addition, observe the installation and operating manual of the turbo coupling! ATTENTION! Electric welding in the surrounding of the non-contacting thermal measuring unit ­ Prior to beginning any welding works near the non-contacting thermal measuring device (5 m distance to evaluator, aerial cables or the multi-core connecting cable), disconnect all lines from the evaluator (all 4 aerial cables, 0 V and 24 VDC ­ voltage supply, all relay-outputs, all 4-20 mA ­ outputs). It is not necessary to remove the evaluator. Electronic components in the evaluator might be damaged! Sprayed off operating fluid: ­ In the event of thermal overload of the turbo coupling, the fusible plugs respond. Operating fluid is discharged through these fusible plugs. ­ Please ensure that the sprayed-off operating fluid cannot get in contact with persons! Danger of burning! ­ Persons being in the surrounding of turbo coupling have to wear goggles. Spraying off hot operating fluid means a risk of losing sight!

­ Make sure that spraying operating fluid cannot get into contact with hot machine parts, heaters, sparks or open flames! There is a risk of fire! ­ In order to prevent danger (e.g. risk of skidding, risk of fire) caused by escaping oil, remove same immediately! ­ Please provide a catch pan of sufficient size, if required

Staff qualification

The staff in charge of any work to be done on the non-contacting thermal measuring unit must ­ be reliable, ­ have the legal minimum age, ­ be trained, instructed and authorized with regard to the intended work.

Possible Applications, BTM Characteristics

The non-contacting thermal measuring unit (BTM) is a monitoring system for Voith turbo couplings. The BTM is used to measure the operating medium temperature of Voith turbo couplings of size 366 up to 1330 (measuring range: 0°C up to 180°C). The non-contacting signal transfer allows measuring the operating medium temperature during active operation and to draw conclusions in regard to the actual coupling stress. Since the temperature is measured directly in the operating medium, stress variations are quickly detected allowing to quickly react on possible overloads and to prevent excessive temperatures. Loss of coupling filling via the fusible plugs and associated downtimes can safely be avoided. Please observe that the BTM, like any other temperature measuring system, indicates the temperature with some time delay. For evaluation and further processing of the data in the machine control the time delay depending on the actual heat-up rate in the operating agent is to be considered. The input power available for machine operation can be optimally used. Please kindly contact Voith.

DANGER! ­ Fusible plugs The fusible plugs protect the turbo coupling against damage due to thermal overload. Even when the BTM is used, fusible plugs must not be replaced by blind screws or by fusible plugs with different nominal response temperatures!

­ Unintentional start of the drive motor Design the machine control so that it grants the stop-condition after tripping on account of excessive operating medium temperature in the Voith turbo coupling, until a manual reset device is activated guaranteeing the safe condition for a re-start! Observe the general design standards in regard to the safety of machines! Danger to life caused by suddenly starting machines!

Application, Operation

The devices are only approved for proper use in accordance with instructions. Contravention excludes any warranty and responsibility of the manufacturer. · It is imperative to maintain ambient conditions as specified in this operating manual. · The operator has to guarantee lightning protection. · Make sure to additionally use the required fusible plugs at every turbo coupling being operated with this measuring system.

5.1

Function temperature sensor (or temperature sensor with adapter)

The temperature sensor is a passive component. It is screwed into the turbo coupling outer wheel or shell and its measuring pivot projects directly into the operating medium. The temperature sensor with adapter is used for retrofitting coupling sizes 487 to 650 of older models without machining. The temperature sensor transfers the measuring signal without contact to the stationary aerial.

5.2

Function BTM ­ blind screw (or BTM-X ­ blind screw)

The BTM ­ blind screw is provided to compensate the mass of the temperature probe and it is mandatory to install same opposite the temperature probe. Without BTM ­ blind screw impermissible forces will be created by unbalancing which may damage the machine system. The BTM-X ­ blind screw serves as mass balance to the temperature sensor with adapter (retrofitting of coupling sizes 487 to 650 of older models without machining).

5.3

Function stationary aerial

The stationary aerial sends a radar signal to the temperature sensor and receives the reflected measuring signal. The measuring signal is passed on to the evaluator via the connecting cable.

Function Holder

The holder is provided to fasten the stationary aerial.

5.5

Function evaluator

The evaluator is an electronic controller with 4 measuring channels. The evaluator generates the radar signals and receives, evaluates and processes the reflected measuring signals. The measured temperatures of every channel are displayed on the evaluator. In addition, the measured temperatures are output as 4-20 mA-signals.

Additionally, two relay outputs each are available per measuring channel with switching thresholds (e.g. pre-warning, tripping) adjustable via the keyboard on the evaluator. Connect the evaluator to the machine control by means of a screened multi-core connecting line. A separate terminal chamber allows connecting the necessary cores easily and safely.

The measuring error of the BTM depends on the heat-up speed. Without detailed knowledge on the drive and the turbo coupling design, there is safe thermal coupling monitoring on account of the following limit temperatures: In nominal operation:

The temperature sensor with adapter is used for retrofitting coupling sizes 487 to 650 of older models without machining. For a short period of time during startup of the working machine or during blockage:

Installation

DANGER! ­ During installation, please observe that all components are potential-free! ­ Please observe, in particular, Chapter 2 (Safety Information)! ­ Fusible plugs Fusible plugs protect the turbo coupling against damages due to thermal overload. Even when the BTM is used, the fusible plugs must not get replaced by blind screws or by fusible plugs with other rated response temperatures!

ATTENTION! ­ Run the cable of the stationary aerial in protected manner in a cable duct or flexible tube (Inner diameter 25mm), observing the bending radii! Risk of cable break and abrasion by chattering!

Note!

Installation, connection ­ evaluator

­ The connecting line from the machine control to the BTM ­ evaluator is not part of Voith's scope of supply! ­ The maximal line length is limited by the voltage loss of the 24 V voltage supply for the BTM ­ evaluator. A connecting line with core sections of 0.5 mm2 may achieve up to 100 m without the voltage supply for the BTM ­ evaluator becoming insufficient. In addition, please observe that the outer line diameter is between 13 mm and 18 mm and that the connecting line is screened. In order to guarantee the EMC-standards, connect the screen of the connecting line correctly to the cable gland of the BTM ­ evaluator (see mounting instruction for cable gland). ­ Maximum distance between stationary aerial and evaluator is defined by the cable length of the stationary aerial and cannot be changed.

Mount the evaluator at a suitable location, where the connecting lines and housing are protected against damage and direct solar radiation. Mount a multi-core connecting cable in the cable gland: Strip the insulation of the connecting line and uncover the braided screen Pass the cable through the union nut Insert cable in clamp Cover the clamp by pushing the braided screen over it (the braid has to cover the O-ring by about 2 mm) Insert the clamp into intermediate piece Mount union nut Chapter 6.5.2 (Terminal assignment)

Provided that the device is used properly and the aerials are connected, the current temperatures are indicated. The display flashes after the adjusted temperature thresholds are exceeded. If there is no measured signal (channel not occupied, speed below 300 rpm, standstill and sensor not upstream of aerial), message E2 is displayed.

How to set limit values Select channel by pressing the arrow keys " " or " " . The actual selection is marked by decimal point. To set lower limit press and hold key "L". The flashing display shows the actual lower limit value. Press key " " or " " until the lower limit value to be adjusted is reached. Release key "L" and " " . The display will show the now adjusted lower limit value for 3 sec. Then the system switches back to the actual temperature indication or the message "E 2" is displayed. This message shows if there is no measuring signal. The new lower limit is set. Repeat steps 2-4 to adjust the upper limit for the actual channel, but press key "H" instead of key "L". Repeat steps 1-5 to adjust the remaining channels. As soon as the decimal point disappears and the actually measured temperature is displayed, all temperature limits are set.

Commissioning

DANGER! Please observe, in particular, Chapter 2 (Safety Information) for all works performed on the BTM! The BTM needs a time for initialization of 10 s. Only then the BTM is ready for operation and the coupling may be started.

Check wiring according to terminal assignment table. Pay particular attention to correct wiring of the supply voltage! Apply supply voltage to evaluator. The BTM requires an initialization time of 10 sec. After max. 10 s (initialization time) the measuring device displays "E 2". If temperature sensor and stationary aerial are opposing each other, the actual temperature is displayed. Now regular operation can be started. In case of malfunctions, please refer to Chapter 11 (Malfunctions ­ Remedy, Troubleshooting). For the minimum speed necessary for correct temperature measurement, please refer to Chapter 6.5.1 (Technical Data). Until this speed is reached, there is no temperature measurement. The correct temperature is measured approx. 1 s after exceeding the minimum speed.
