RUBBER BAND CONTEST: TEACHER COMPETITION 2012 As part of the fourth annual Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors, the Akron Global Polymer Academy (AGPA) of The University of Akron has added a competition for teachers. We want to discover the best original lesson plans that teachers have developed for integrating the Rubber Band Contest into their classrooms. Three teachers--who submit the best lesson plans--will each receive $250 and a collection of science materials for their classroom. The top three lesson plans will also be featured on the Akron Global Polymer Academy website and next year's Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors website. All entries must be received by 5:00 p.m. EST on April 2, 2012.

OFFICIAL TEACHER CONTEST RULES ELIGIBILITY:

· This competition is open to all teachers who teach in grades 5-8 for the 2011-2012 school year. Teachers must teach at an accredited public or private school, charter school, or home school and must reside within the United States or U.S. Territories. Employees and their immediate family members and/or those living in the same household of the Akron Global Polymer Academy and any and all Contest Sponsor(s) are not eligible.

CONTEST PERIOD:

· The contest period begins at 2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time ("EST") on Friday, September 16, 2011.

The contest period ends at 5:00 PM EST on Monday, April 2, 2012. All entries must be submitted via email to [email protected] and received by this expiration time. Entries received after the above deadline will be disqualified.

CONTEST DESCRIPTION:

· The challenge: to fully develop a standards-based lesson plan integrating the Rubber Band Contest into your classroom curriculum. The lesson plan must be: o Written following the learning cycle model http://agpa.uakron.edu/p16/btp.php?id=learning-cycle o Submitted in the AGPA Lesson Plan Template, which is included as a part of the Official Teacher Contest Entry Form located at the Rubber Band Contest website. o Classroom ready for other teachers

HOW TO ENTER:

To enter the contest, ALL of the following required materials must be received at the Akron Global Polymer Academy no later than 5:00 p.m. EST on Monday, April 2, 2012. · · · · Download the Official Teacher Contest Entry Form/AGPA Lesson Plan Template from the Rubber Band Contest website. Complete an Official Teacher Contest Entry Form/AGPA Lesson Plan Template (required). Include at least one clear photograph of yourself (required). The photograph can be scanned or taken with a digital camera, but should be print quality (at least 300dpi). Submit your Official Teacher Contest Entry Form/AGPA Lesson Plan Template and photograph(s) as attachments in an email to: [email protected] o Type the words "Teacher Contest" in the subject line of your email · Entry Deadline: All entries must be submitted via email to [email protected] and received by 5:00 p.m. EST on Monday, April 2, 2012. Entries received after the entry deadline will be disqualified. Failure to follow all of the rules will result in disqualification.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT THE CONTEST:

· If your lesson plan is one of the top three lesson plans, the Akron Global Polymer Official Rules ­ Page 2 of 5

Academy has the right to post your lesson plan (giving credit of authorship to you) on the Akron Global Polymer Academy website and Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors website for free access to the general public. · · If your lesson plan is one of the top three lesson plans, your photo may be used for publicity purposes. By submitting the Official Teacher Contest Entry Form/AGPA Lesson Plan Template you attest that the lesson plan is your original lesson plan (the idea for the lesson plan can be from another source that you properly credit). If your lesson plan is one of the top three lesson plans, you will need to sign the necessary general release form. Failure to sign the necessary form will result in disqualification and forfeiture of contest prizes.

JUDGING:

· · · · Each contestant is limited to one entry. All entries received in accordance with the rules will be judged according to the lesson plan rubric located at: www.rubberbandcontest.org/lessonplanrubric.pdf Winners are selected by a panel of educators. The decision of the judges is final and binding in all matters. The teachers with the three top lesson plans will be notified on or about Friday, May 25, 2012.

PRIZES:

· 3 Grand Prizes ­ Each winning teacher will receive: o $ 250 o A collection of science materials for your classroom o A commemorative certificate o The honor of having their lesson plan featured on the Akron Global Polymer Academy website and next year's Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors website.

ADDITIONAL PRIZE DETAILS:

· · All federal, state and local taxes are the sole responsibility of the prize winners. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. RESTRICTIONS, RIGHTS, AND RELEASE:

Note: The Contest Host is the Akron Global Polymer Academy. · · The Contest Host and any and all Contest Sponsor(s) are not responsible for any injuries or damages to participants in this competition. The Contest Host and any and all Contest Sponsor(s) are not responsible for events beyond their control, including, without limitation, acts of God, war, strikes or government restrictions, or any other circumstance of force majeure, nor, in the absence of their own negligence for personal injury, accidents, death, property damage or loss, delay caused by person not controlled by the Contest Host or any and all Contest Sponsor(s) including, without limitation, airlines, bus companies, railways, hotels, restaurants, taxis or any other agency, company or individual. All contestants shall agree to be bound by all rules and regulations specified by the Contest Host and any and all Contest Sponsor(s). Further, such contestants shall agree to be bound by all of the terms and conditions set forth in all documents relating to the RUBBER BAND CONTEST: TEACHER COMPETITION (including without limitation, the GENERAL RELEASE AND PHOTOGRAPHY/RADIO/VIDEO RELEASE). The Contest Host and any and all Contest Sponsor(s) reserve the right to amend any portion of the contest, including contest guidelines, publicity and prize packages. The Contest Host and any and all Contest Sponsor(s) are granted permission, upon entry into the competition, to use (in their sole discretion) the contestant's name, photograph, likeness, and entry materials, for publicity purposes. Acceptance of the prizes constitutes permission to the Contest Host and any and all Contest Sponsor(s) to use the prize winner's name and/or likeness for purposes of advertising and promotion and trade without further compensation unless prohibited by law. By accepting the prize awards, prize winners agree to hold harmless the Akron Global Polymer Academy and any and all Contest Sponsor(s), their respective officers, directors, agents, employees, attorneys, shareholders, partners, controlling persons, predecessors, subsidiaries, affiliates, parent corporations, insurers, successors, and assign against any and all claims and liability arising out of their participation in this contest or the use of the prizes. Prize winners assume all liability for any injury or damage caused or claimed to be caused, by the participation in this contest or use or redemption of any prize. By participating in this contest, contestants agree to be bound by the Official Rules and the decision of the judges. The Contest Host and any and all Contest Sponsor(s) are not responsible for: lost, late, mutilated or illegible entries, nor for electronic delays, file corruption, or technical limitations of any kind, or inaccurate transmissions of or failure to receive entry information by the Akron Global Polymer Academy or any and all Contest Sponsor(s) on account of technical problems, or shipment problems or errors.
