SECTION 09670 HEAVY-DUTY FLOOR TOPPING Specifier Notes: This section covers Rust-Oleum "BriteCast HD" heavy-duty floor topping system for interior concrete floors. The BriteCast HD flooring system, 1/4 inch total thickness, consists of the following: Primer FlorClad Primer Base FlorClad HD Topping BriteCast Basecoat Aggregate BriteCast Aggregate Sealer BriteCast Sealer Specify either the High Profile Texture or Low Profile Texture of BriteCast HD. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's product data, including physical properties and application instructions. Samples: Submit manufacturer's standard color samples. QUALITY ASSURANCE Applicator's Qualifications: Ensure applicator's qualifications by 1 of the following: 1. Use applicator experienced in application of specified materials for a minimum of 5 years on projects of similar size and complexity. Submit list of completed projects including project name and location, name of architect, name of material manufacturer, and approximate quantity of materials applied. 2. Submit letter of approval from manufacturer stating applicator is qualified to apply specified materials. Applicator's Personnel: Employ persons trained for application of specified materials.

Preapplication Meeting: Convene a preapplication meeting [2] [ _______ ] weeks before start of application of heavy-duty floor topping system. Require attendance of parties directly affecting work of this section, including Contractor, Architect, applicator, and manufacturer's representative. Review surface preparation, application, curing, protection, and coordination with other work. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING Delivery: Deliver materials to site in manufacturer's original, unopened containers and packaging, with labels clearly identifying product name, manufacturer, batch or lot number, and date of manufacture. Storage: Store materials in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Keep containers sealed until ready for use. Handling: Protect materials during handling and application to prevent damage or contamination. PART 3 3.1 A.

EXAMINATION Examine surfaces to receive heavy-duty floor topping system. Notify Architect if surfaces are not acceptable. Do not begin surface preparation or application until unacceptable conditions have been corrected.

Specifier Notes: Non-porous toppings should not be applied to concrete slabs subject to osmotic pressure, hydrostatic pressure, or excessive water vapor emission. Consult Rust-Oleum for additional information. B. Determine moisture content of concrete slab in accordance with ASTM D 4263, Rubber Manufacturers Association calcium chloride test, and manufacturer's instructions. Do not apply floor topping to concrete slab subject to osmotic pressure, hydrostatic pressure, or excessive water vapor emission. Ensure new concrete has the following properties: 1. Maximum water/cement ratio of 0.45. 2. Cured a minimum of 28 days at a minimum of 70 degrees F. 3. Minimum compressive strength of 3,500 psi. 4. Minimum tensile strength of 200 psi. SURFACE PREPARATION

Specifier Notes: A properly prepared concrete surface is absolutely essential for a successful application. There can be no contamination or slick spots which will inhibit bonding of the floor material. The desired result of surface preparation is a surface free of contaminants, with an abraded texture similar to 60 grit sandpaper. A. B. Prepare surfaces in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Ensure concrete is clean and free of dirt, oil, grease, wax, paint, coatings, toppings, laitance, curing compounds, sealers, and other surface contaminants which will inhibit bonding of floor 09670 - 5

primer. C. D. Repair cracked and eroded concrete in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Remove and repair unsound concrete. Provide abraded concrete surface texture similar to 60 grit sandpaper by acid etching, abrasive blasting, or mechanical preparation. 1. If acid etching is performed, completely remove acid residue from concrete surface with a minimum 2,000 psi pressure water wash. 2. If abrasive blasting or mechanical preparation is performed, completely remove concrete dust from concrete surface. APPLICATION

Specifier Notes: Delete the following sentence if cove base is not required. A. B. C. D. E. F. G. Install cove base before application of flooring in accordance with manufacturer's instructions at locations indicated on drawings. Ensure concrete surface is visibly dry. Mix component materials in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Do not add thinners to materials. Apply materials while air temperature is stable or decreasing. Apply primer to prepared concrete surface in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Apply base over primer in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Apply topping over base in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

Specifier Notes: Consult Rust-Oleum for assistance in specifying required flooring system thickness for the specific application. H. I. Apply flooring system at a thickness of 1/4 inch. Spread aggregate in accordance with manufacturer's instructions to produce even and complete coverage of topping surface.

Specifier Notes: BriteCast HD flooring system is available in two standard surface textures - High Profile and Low Profile. Texture depends on the number of coats of BriteCast Sealer applied. High Profile: High surface texture, best used in wet areas. Relatively aggressive anti-skid surface, with peaks and valleys of the aggregate equally sealed. One coat of BriteCast Sealer applied. Low Profile: Less aggressive surface texture, easier to clean. Light texture, leaving only the tips of the aggregate above the surface of the sealer. Two coats of BriteCast Sealer applied. Consult Rust-Oleum for assistance in specifying the required texture for the specific application. J. Apply sealer over floor topping in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
