Ancestry information needed

Dear Choctaw Nation, I am Choctaw and Cherokee and am searching for information to complete my application for a CDIB. I have everything required except proof of my great-grandmother's death, Mary Clementine Isom Fagan. Mary Clementine died in 1912 in Paoli, Oklahoma. I understand there is a grave there but no markings and there is no record of her death it seems. Mary Clementine's father was James M. Isom. I hope someone out there can help with information on this. Thank you. Jeanne Barnes 200 University Mineola, TX 75773

Dear Chief Pyle, Thank you, Chief Pyle, and tribal staff for your visit to Phoenix. I brought my youngest daughter to get her photo for her tribal card and my granddaughter as well. While there, I ran into my mother with her sister and husband, my aunt and uncle. Also attending were my mother's oldest brother, Uncle Adolphus, his wife, my cousin and her family, my cousin Steven Lee and family and my mother's youngest brother, John, and his wife. I figured my mother would be there. My daughter and granddaughter sat with her. We all enjoyed a sort of family reunion. I enjoyed the prayer given in Choctaw, a language I only remember my grandfather speaking in bits and pieces when I was a boy. I want to especially thank John Lance with the Veterans Advocacy Program. He gave me my coin but I will always remember the smile I saw on my Uncle John's face when John Lance handed my Uncle John his coin. Phillip G. Payne U.S. Army Corps of Engineer, Ret.

NAPLP a way to learn and connect

Dear Choctaw Nation, Thank you for the scholarship which helped enable me to attend the University of Oklahoma from which I graduated last May with a BA in letters. I had the privilege of spending my final semester in our nation's capitol at George Washington University through the Native American Political Leadership Program's Semester in Washington, which I learned about from the Bishinik. The NAPLP is a wonderful chance for native students to see a glimpse of how our government works and hopefully intrigue them enough to get in and stay involved. During my semester, I interned for a nonprofit organization, Meridian International Center, where it was my duty to liaise with the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, having the opportunity to meet ambassadors and other notable persons. I now live in Washington, D.C., working for Meridian full-time in the capacity of a program associate for business development. The opportunities, experience and confidence generated through my education at OU and my semester in Washington would not have been possible without the aid of my fellow tribesmen, so again I say thank you, and I encourage all college-aged tribesmen to consider the NAPLP SIW Program as a way to learn, connect, and get involved. Paying attention to the environment

From the Desk of Chief Gregory E. Pyle

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is truly some of the most beautiful country in the world. It is a blessing to have seen many areas of our country as I visit with Choctaws in other states. I always admire the scenery of the coast, the mountains, and everything in between. Home here in Oklahoma has a special call for me, though, and as exciting as it is to see the ocean and the large cities, the familiar sights of Southeastern Oklahoma are hard to beat. The air and water here are still pristine, and we are fighting to keep the quality as high as possible. Although we encourage development from businesses, schools, and individuals, the Choctaw Nation is also very concerned about the environment and we want to do our part in the effort to "go green." As we become more educated on ways to conserve and preserve, we find that some of the things that are best for our environment have also been pretty good for the pocketbook. It is a simple matter to cut down on the use of electricity by unplugging chargers when not in use and turning off computers and appli-

ances when leaving for the day. As environmentally conscious habits at home and work have improved over the years, Choctaw Nation staff have become more proactive in efforts to change the mindset of the community. Clean-up days on the highway and park beautifications have become common events for many of the employees of the tribe and their families. This should help make the next generation a cleaner generation, since the theory is that anyone who has picked up trash on several miles of highway will never be a litterbug. The tribe has grown so much in the past 10 years that our offices in Durant have had to expand to 13 buildings in addition to the main headquarters office. Because we want to make services available to Choctaws in a "one-stop-shopping" experience with efficiency and ease, a new, much larger headquarters is being designed. We are paying attention to the environment with this new building, too, aiming for a LEED certification. This will be the first Native American administrative complex that has this certification. Of all the things that the Choctaw Nation has accepted in a leadership role, being a leader in environmentally sustainable construction ranks among the top.

Preparing for eternity

Again it is my privilege to share with you something from the Word of God. I am reminded much of our Choctaw-speaking preachers saying, "Achukmalit illa nukfilla shke." ("Let's meditate or think on these things.") The Bible indicates that this life we are living is only for a brief period preparing us for eternity. There are many who are living only for today with little thought about the future life. The Bible has a great deal to say about the future, one is the subject of hell. In the record of the rich man in Luke 16, we have an example of a man who chose to disregard God's law and lived to regret it in a place that Jesus called hell. Jesus was trying to picture what would happen if you left God out of your plans. Because He will bring judgment in the life to come. In Luke 16:22 we see that this man was rich, "...the rich man also died, and was buried." God does not condemn men because they are rich, nor does He justify a man because he is poor. Poverty is not a virtue nor are riches in themselves sin. The altar of God is where the rich and the poor meet. There are no rich nor poor in heaven and with one voice they say, "Nothing in my hands I bring, simply to thy cross I cling." Some of the finest Christians are men of means, but their bank accounts, like their lives, are consecrated wholly to God. But the rich man of whom Jesus spoke, lived selfishly. This rich man eventually found himself forsaken by the God he had ignored and by his friends whom he had neglected. Money with all its advantages cannot buy everything. This rich man died and all of wealth could not buy one more precious hour of life. Think of the things that cannot be bought with money. It cannot buy health, friends, love, or peace of heart and mind. It cannot buy peace of soul. We come to the conclusion then, that money in itself is not worthy of the importance most people place upon it. This man's sin was his selfish use of money. He placed it ahead of God and because of that, his heart was conditioned for hell instead of heaven. Notice in verse 23 of Luke 16 the place to which the rich man was condemned, "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom." I find no pleasure in the knowledge of the fact of hell, but it is my duty to remind you that the same book, the Bible, that proclaims the wonders of heaven also describes the terrors of an eternal separation from God in hell. The rich man carried all of his faculties with him when he went to hell. He saw, he felt, he heard, he remembered and he cried. A million years from today, for eternity, you will still be living somewhere. The immaterial part of man, your memory, your hearing, your feeling,

Chaplain's Corner

mented." I imagine also that this man had an opportunity to turn to God, but refused or neglected it and now he had the memory of those neglected opportunities. You remember the times that you drove by the church. You are going to remember the times that you saw the Bible and neglected to read it. You are going to remember the times the Spirit of God spoke to you in the quietness of your heart, but you didn't turn to God. You are going to remember throughout eternity and that alone will be a torment that will drive you deeper into hell. This man squandered his opportunity. Notice, the rich man had the torment of thirst. We read in Luke 16:24 "... he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame." Is there literal fire in hell? I answer, by reminding you again that these are the words of Jesus. Jesus said, "in this flame." This brings us to the last torment. The torment of separation in Luke 16:26, "And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot, neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence." Sin separates God from man. It was man's sin in the beginning which created a gulf of separation between God and man. But Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in the supreme act of atonement fashioned a bridge over the impassable gulf of separation, and reconciled God and man. This bridge was in the form of a cross and every man who comes to God must come by the way of the cross. Will you trust Jesus Christ as your Savior today? You do this by faith. Remember to pray for America. Pray for our leaders. May is Memorial month, pray for our Service men and women.

Rev. Bertram Bobb Tribal Chaplain your sight, your taste, will be living somewhere forever according to the teaching of the Bible. It is reasonable to believe that God the Father would not send His only Begotten Son to leave heaven, to come to this earth, to become man, to be mocked by an insane mob, to be spit upon by the rude rebels, to be nailed to the cross and to die shamefully upon the cross, if there were no danger of your soul being lost and going to hell. There are many people who feel that sermons on hell are intended to frighten the lost into accepting Jesus Christ. This is not my motive. This is what the Bible teaches, if our Lord Jesus Christ mentioned it over and over again it is important enough for me to mention. Notice how the rich man was punished in Luke 16:23, "And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, ..." It took the torments of hell to turn this rich man's thoughts toward others. What will people endure in the service of Satan and sin? See him descending down the social ladder in spite of the prayers of friends and loved ones and the faithful convicting plea of the Holy Spirit. The rich man had the torment of memory. Abraham said in Luke 16:25, "... remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tor-

Laying the foundation of an historic building

From the Desk of Assistant Chief Gary Batton

The importance of learning our Choctaw Nation history has really been brought home to me as we work on designing a new tribal headquarters. There are many opportunities for symbolism in every aspect. I keep thinking of simple things such as placing 12 steps to represent 12 Council members, or trios of windows could represent the three branches of government. Even the designs in tile work, etchings, and marble could be tremendous works of art that depict our culture of stickball, diamond design, love of nature ... the list can continue as long as the architect's imagination.

I appreciate the energy the staff and the design team are putting into the process. Books have been read cover-to-cover

to find out everything that is written about the Choctaws from the first contact with DeSoto in 1540 until now. A lot of interest has been placed on the Trail of Tears and other benchmarks of history such as the forming of the Lighthorsemen, the Code Talkers, the Dawes Commission and the meaning of our Great Seal. Thanks to this interest, there are volumes written that we can learn from today. Just recently, I saw a picture of the construction of the Capitol at Tushka Homma with four men standing next to the three-story building. Even with the scaffolding surrounding the structure and the change of landscape, it was recognizable as our Capitol that is still used today as a court and a museum. What an awesome feeling to know that the small group of men in the old photo who were viewing the brick and mortar work on that historic building over 100 years ago had probably faced some of the same challenges that we are going through today in planning a headquarters building to serve Choctaw people all over the world. We want to be able to offer programs and services in this new building that will help tribal people access everything they need in the most comfortable and least complicated way possible.

Here are some handy tips to help you get moving, encourage food and drink to grow on, and let your children help with grocery shopping. 1. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. 2. Strrretch! After sitting for a long time, reach up high to the ceiling. Now reach down to the floor. 3. When you wake up in the morning, give each part of your body a little wiggle and get an energetic start to the day. 4. At bedtime, talk about all the ways you have moved during the day, and name some fun, active things you would like to do tomorrow. 5. An "anytime" food is something we can eat every day, such

as fruits and veggies in all colors of the rainbow, whole grains, lean meats and low-fat milk to drink. 6. "Sometime" foods are high in sugar, fat or salt. That is why we should only eat them once in awhile. They are foods such as cookies, candy, chips and sodas. 7. Start off with the grocery aisles on the outermost part of the store, where you can choose food such as fresh produce and dairy. 8. Give your child a small list of items to look for and check off as they are found.

Another baby? Why it's best to wait ...

By Ashley Norris, AFL Technician There are lots of good reasons to wait at least two years before you get pregnant again. Spacing your babies well apart... · Increases the chance that your next baby will be born healthy and thrive. · Gives your body time to replace the nutrients it used during pregnancy. · Gives you time to enjoy this baby and give her the attention she needs to grow. · Reduces your stress and exhaustion. Two babies at once can be overwhelming. · Reduces the chance that you will get so overwhelmed that you lose your cool with your children. · Gives you a chance to get your own life back together and focus on your personal needs and plans. · Helps you financially. Two babies in diapers can really be expensive. The Choctaw Nation Adolescent Family Life (AFL) Project is an innovative program focused on pregnant teens, their child, male partner and extended family members. The AFL program provides opportunities for a brighter future through integrated services within the Choctaw Nation and other agencies. Participants will expand their knowledge through prenatal education, relationship enhancement programs, and parenting workshops. Striving for healthy outcomes in adolescent family lives is our program goal. Services are provided through Choctaw Nation Outreach Services to pregnant Native American teens under 19 years of age or otherwise qualified through an eligible Native American, For more information or questions about eligibility please call: Angela Dancer, Project Director, at 1-877-285-6893

Want to save about 3,000 gallons of water per year? It's as easy as turning off the tap when you brush your teeth or shave. Once you've got that down, look for creative ways to use less water, such as washing fruits and vegetables in a bowl instead of running the tap. You might be surprised by how many water-saving opportunities you'll find! © The Green Life

By Preston Wells, Chair Choctaw Nation Youth Advisory Board

We are what we do

To the youth of the Nation

The rebirth and rejuvenation of spring has arrived and colors are showing up everywhere. Flowers begin to bloom and the grass is in the "cut me every two weeks-stage." Although spring is the season that gives birth back to nature, do I need something to bring me back to life? Aristotle once said, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." I read this quote and thought about it for a good while so I could understand its full meaning. Then I realized that we cannot accomplish what we don't do. So in order to succeed in all that I do, I must repeatedly do what I feel is right. Therefore it is my choice to decide what I do and what I become, not anyone else's. To strive for excellence may be hard but do I ever repeatedly try to become all that I can be? To become good at anything a person must put effort into it, but to become great; a person must put forth all effort. How often do people think about good habits? Not very much. If we spent our time thinking about the good things we do, we might do them more often. What we do repetitively is not an act, it is not fake, it is not someone else; it is a habit and part of who we are. Keep faith in good habits and continue to do them. Think about the good things and the many blessings in your life. Excellence is achievable in anything if you put forth effort. Always remember that when preparation meets opportunity you can only succeed.

Employees, families celebrate Earth Day with park projects

In photo at right, District 7 Councilman Jack Austin shovels a spot for a tree to be planted in the Little People's Park in Antlers. There were 100 elementary kids helping out in the park. Youth Advisory Board members were on hand to paint faces and Smokey the Bear was also in attendance. Eight trees were planted and flowers were placed around some trees.

Calera Councilmember Vicki Barkley and Calera Vice Mayor David Westbrook watch as Chief Greg Pyle and Councilman Ted Dosh plant a tree in Calera Park on Earth Day. Over 100 Choctaw Nation employees and members of their families worked on the project, planting approximately 40 trees and 40 shrubs. The efforts to clean up and beautify parks in Calera, Wilburton, Antlers and Atoka are all a part of the "Go Green" initiative, and offer a way to partner with the communities.

TBAG

Congratulations to employees on a great day at Atoka planting trees and painting fence and benches at the park! The friends and families of Choctaw Nation employees joined in with staff and Councilman Dillard for about three hours of work to beautify the park, which has a great walking path. Hopefully, with the attractive new paint job and the new shade trees, even more families will be drawn to the outdoors to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.Councilman Dillard said he felt this was one way he could participate in a "servant leadership" initiative that could carry through the generations to come.

From Page 1 year's conference. "We have come a long way since the first conference," he said. "More and more programs are becoming involved which leads to positive working relationships. "I would like to thank everyone involved in making the 2009 Conference a success, especially Chief Pyle, Assistant Chief Batton and the Tribal Council for their support." The TBAG Conference Planning Committee included Cole, Choctaw Nation employees Caren Johnson, Valarie Robison, Cyndi Houser, Olin Williams, Judy Parks and Patricia Lilley; Chickasaw Nation's Eddie Postoak, Dixie Brewer and Kirk Perry; Joyce Bear of the Muscogee Creek Nation; and U.S. Forestry Service staff Meek Etchieson, David Journey, Bert Pelltier and Lexie LaRue-Harris.

USDA announces Grassland Reserve Program sign-up for 2009

Ann Colyer, Tribal Resource Conservationist, National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), announces the availability of funding for enrollment in the Grassland Reserve Program (GRP). The 2008 Farm Bill continued authorization for this program. USDA is providing nearly $1.6 million to Oklahoma for GRP enrollments in permanent easements and in 10-, 15- and 20-year rental contracts. "GRP is a voluntary program that helps protect valuable grasslands from conversion to other land uses, thus helping to ensure this national resource is available to future generations," said Colyer. "Enrollment of land in GRP will have a positive economic impact on the country and improve environmental quality by preventing the conversion of grassland to other uses, including crop production and urban development." The NRCS and Farm Service Agency (FSA) are coordinating the implementation of GRP, which helps landowners restore, protect and rehabilitate grassland, rangeland, pastureland, shrubland, and certain other lands. When properly managed, grasslands and shrublands can result in cleaner water, healthier riparian areas, and reduced sediment in streams and other water bodies. These lands are vital for the production of forage for domestic livestock and provide essential habitat elements for maintaining healthy wildlife populations. These lands also improve the aesthetic character

Council

Councilman Joe Coley and Wilburton Mayor Stephen Brinlee, along with a crew of Choctaw Nation employees from the Wilburton and McAlester area, planted trees in a Wilburton park. Councilman Coley blessed the 25 trees before they were planted.

of the landscape and provide scenic vistas, open space, recreational opportunities and soil erosion protection. Priority enrollment and ranking criteria for 2009 has not been finalized at the current time, pending release of the final program rule. Colyer indicates the criteria will take into consideration: grazing operations, protection of eligible acres under the highest threat of conversion to uses other than grazing lands, expiring Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres, plant and animal biodiversity, and offers from eligible entities (who wish to partner in the acquisition of GRP easements). Individuals interested in offering land, but unsure if they meet the eligibility requirements may contact NRCS or FSA office. Applicants must select to enroll under the permanent easement option, or for a rental contract of 10-, 15- or 20-year duration. If restoration activities are needed, applicants may request cost-share assistance for specific practices as identified on a list of GRP practices set up for grassland restoration activities. All applications, meeting eligibility requirements, that have been submitted by close of business on May 15, 2009, will be ranked and considered for the 2009 funding. Producers interested in participation in GRP may apply at any time at the local NRCS or FSA office. Additional information is available at www.ok.nrcs. usda.gov/programs/grp.
