LA PARROQUIA DEL SAGRADO CORAZON SACRED HEART PARISH a people called to be a Christian community and to stand on the side of GIAO X U THANH TAM life with all the struggling people of Camden and the world. Gathering PAROISTE AN CHROI NAOFA

1739 Ferry Avenue, Camden, NJ 08104 JULY 1, 2012 - 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

5TH SUNDAY OF PENTECOST Ordinary time means time for us to slow down and see the beauty and grace that fill our days. It is a good time to enjoy the ordinary things eating and drinking together, talking, cleaning the bathroom, sharing, and exchanging ideas. Wasting time on each other! IT IS TRULY RIGHT AND JUST I put "Thanks and praises be to God" on my mother's tombstone, because it was always in her heart and on her lips several times everyday. It is the anthem of the HEART, as we celebrate with joy and gratitude, the good news that God provided for the children of Sacred Heart School once again! We got 2800 sponsors which is eight hundred and forty thousand dollars ($840,000). Our school is the most extraordinary ministry of Sacred Heart Church. The cost is more than one million dollars! Thanks to everyone who sponsored and especially to Gail/Tim Gooney for working everyday of the year, tending to sponsorship! Thanks and praises be to God! M. Doyle FROM THE BOOK OF WISDOM God did not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living. For God fashioned all things that they might have being...For God formed the humans to be imperishable; the image of God's own nature; God made them. But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world. Today's First Reading

around God's table every Sunday, we celebrate that Christ is Risen and ultimately all is well.

Today's Entrance Antiphon

Life flowing out of the hemorrhaging woman's body. Life has gone out of the body of Jairus' daughter. In response to their faith in him, power goes out of the body of Jesus, restoring their life. Jesus' power is passed through physical contact: the woman touches the hem of Jesus' garment; Jesus takes the hand of the little girl. Do we have the faith to touch and be touched by Jesus so that whatever is dead within us may be restored to life? Living Liturgy

DANIEL "DANNY" COLL Our beloved friend of Carnevale Sunday and our most favorite Mummer, died on June 20, 2012. He was 73. He was a graduate of Roman Catholic High School Class of 1957. He came when his band, Greater Overbrook String Band, would come to play for Carnevale Sunday or the Hearts & Hands Festival. Then he came "freelance" to play with whomever was playing for us. He and his spouse of 52 years, Penny, would come for Mass and then Danny would help keep the group in line until Mass was over. He was at our Carnevale Mass this past February 19, 2012. His Mass of Christian Burial was on Wednesday, June 27th at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Cinnaminson. Michael Doyle and Susan Cedrone attended his viewing on June 26th at Snover/ Givnish of Cinnaminson Funeral Home and were able to express to his family the joy he brought to Sacred Heart. He had a brother a priest, Rev. Charles Coll, S.M. (RIP) and a sister a nun, Sister Kathleen Coll, SSJ, two other brothers, William and James, and a sister, Marie Rosney. To his spouse, six children, eleven grandchildren, one great, and all of his family and all who loved him, we offer our deepest sympathy. We will remember him especially on Carnevale Sunday, February 10, 2013! He is playing for the saints, now! May he rest in peace! 07-01-12 NEWS FROM SACRED HEART SCHOOL We Have a Winner! For two days in March, 2012, fifteen Sacred Heart students participated in a haiku workshop led by well-known haiku poet and teacher, Tom Painting. At the end of the workshop the students were encouraged to choose their best haiku and submit them to the Nicholas A. Virgilio Memorial Haiku Competition for grades 7-12, named in honor of Sacred Heart's beloved parishioner and famed haiku poet, Nick Virgilio, who died in 1989. The competition is national, submissions are anonymous, and there are only 6 winners. This year, Sacred Heart's 7th Grade student, Siani Macklin, was one of the winners! Her winning haiku: rainfall grey sky in big puddles When asked how she felt about being a winner, a very surprised Siani said, "Well, I think it's great!" Siani's haiku will appear in the Haiku Society of America's publication, Frogpond, and on their website. It will also be featured in the upcoming newsletter from the Nick Virgilio Haiku Association. Siani, we are so proud of you! SACRED HEART DAY PARISH PICNIC 2012 at the old Star Theatre being transformed into a Field House, was a great success on June 17th! Many thanks to all who helped to make the day so special. Special thanks to Pat Kelly for coordinating; and Dee/Herb Pfueffer for all their help! ST. MARIA GORETTI, A CHILD SAINT (1890-1902) Her feast day is Friday, July 6th. William Hart McNichols wrote in the book The Bride coauthored with Daniel Berrigan: "Maria Goretti surfaces over and over in our culture as stumbling block and witness. Maria is the prematurely old child bearing heavy responsibilities because of deaths in her family and the family's subsequent poverty. Maria is the radiant child bearing a dignity and prayerfulness beyond her years her life being one that would attract both good and evil. Maria is the abused child determined to protect herself while being worn down, stalked, and threatened by a family friend. Finally, Maria is a Christ figure, forgiving from her death bed, forgiving the unforgivable...a sign of the flowering cross." Daniel Berrigan's words: ... Maria, slum child, burdened beyond her years, knowing good and evil conflicted. She chose, and closed a door. The year, 1902. She is portal and portent, emblem of a bloodshot century. Maria, first of the children of war, children of sanctions, children unwanted, children aborted, children falling to hunger, children tortured and disappeared. St. Maria, pray for us!
