SACRED HEARTS PARISH

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

MARCH 13, 2011

Dear friends in Christ, Thankfully, I made my way out to Indianapolis, and back, without a hitch. My flights were on time, the ground transfers were reasonable, and the hotel was great. As a matter of fact, the hotel was the former Union Station in Indianapolis which was converted several years ago into a hotel and conference center. Bishop Christopher Coyne was beaming at his ordination liturgy, as were the members of his family, and all his Boston friends, classmates and brother priests. Bishop Coyne will serve as an Auxiliary Bishop in the Indianapolis Archdiocese, and the "head bishop" or `ordinary' as he is referred to in Church parlance, Archbishop Daniel Buechlein, who is ailing, will certainly welcome Bishop Coyne's help and assistance. Last week, especially last Friday, was quite busy. Upon my return from the Midwest, Friday was first Friday, and so we had both the First Friday Mass for Sacred Hearts School, and, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Adoration, and Benediction at 5:00 PM. Also, last Friday was the funeral Mass for Mrs. Alice Kelley, the mother of Fr. Arnold Kelley, our very faithful and generous Senior Priest. Mrs. Kelley's funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Family Parish in Amesbury, and Fr. Kelley honored me by asking me to preside and offer the homily at his mom's funeral Mass. A good number of brother priests were also present to lend their support to Fr. Kelley, including Fr. Dan McCoy, native son of St. Patrick's, Groveland. I just learned this morning that Sacred Hearts Parish had the largest number of Snow Campers of any parish participating! Seventeen of our 7th and 8th graders did the parish proud, and entered into a deeper and more abiding relationship with Our Lord. Way to go, kids!!! Last weekend we, as did every parish in the Archdiocese of Boston, launched the 2011 Catholic Appeal. I know that these times are challenging; I'm reminded of it every time I pull up to the gas pump to fill my tank. I ask that you please support the Catholic Appeal to the best of your means. As Cardinal Sean said in the video presentation, "any amount, no matter how great or small, is appreciated if it is given in faith and love." Your support of the Catholic Appeal truly assists in the overall mission of the Church; thank you! I have been a member of the Knights of Columbus for over a dozen years, but it wasn't until just last week that I was admitted into the Fourth Degree of the Knights. I'm so very thankful to Council 5004, the Grand Knight, Christopher Murphy, and the many district representatives of the Knights, for making arrangements for me to achieve this milestone. Let me say to the men of the parish, if you are looking for a faith-filled, fraternal circle of wonderful and committed men, look no further than the Knights of Columbus. As has been the practice for the past several years, there will be additional times for the Sacrament of Reconciliation [Confession] during Lent. Specifically, we will offer confessions at the following times: x Mondays 5:00 6:00 PM St. Patrick Church, Groveland x Wednesdays 6:30 8:00 PM Imm. Heart Mary Chapel, Bradford & St. Patrick, Groveland x Saturdays 3:00 3:45 PM Imm. Heart Mary Chapel, Bradford [usual date & time] Finally, after much consideration, and with consultation to the Parish Pastoral Council, we are amending the weekday Mass schedule. The Saturday morning 7:00 AM Mass will be eliminated; the last Saturday for the 7:00 AM Mass will be Saturday, April 30th. If there are any intentions scheduled for the 7:00 AM Mass beyond April 30 th, we will work with the families who requested the intention, and attempt to work out an alternative solution. On the following Saturday, May 7th, we will introduce a FIRST SATURDAY MASS at 9:00 AM. The First Saturday Mass will be a Mass of Anointing of the Sick. Anyone who is of advanced age, chronically ill, or facing an upcoming surgery is eligible and invited to attend this once-a-month Mass. With declining numbers of priests, it is far better to be pro-active and receive the Sacrament of the Sick at this monthly celebration, than risk not receiving it at all because a priest is not available. Fr. Bob Conole In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,

Donations were made to the Sacred Hearts School Endowment Fund in loving memory of the following:

"Bonnie" suffers from depression and so has difficulty holding down a job. She receives $479.00 a month from SSDI. "Brian" was just let go from his job and hopes to collect something from unemployment but has been told it will only be about $100 a week. They have fuel assistance, which has helped them to pay their heat and electricity. Their phone and cable have been shut off. They get $526 worth of food stamps a month and "Bonnie" goes to the food pantry weekly. They owed $2,000 for their back rent for January and February. We decided to pay $500.00 of this for them. In addition we strongly suggested that they do the following: continue using the food pantry weekly; fill out paper work for public housing; contact the credit card companies and ask if they can have some relief from their outstanding charges and maybe a consolidation agreement; and contact Mass Health ASAP to get back onto health insurance. A follow up will be done in the next month to see how they are doing. In today's Gospel we hear how Jesus was tempted by the devil. One of the temptations we face every day is the indifference we so often feel towards those less fortunate than ourselves. You can fight this temptation by your generous offering to our Poor Box today. By so doing, you help to provide us with the resources we need to assist "Bonnie", "Bruce" and so many like them.

PARISH BABY SHOWER Court Sacred Hearts #864, Catholic Daughters of Americas and Sacred Hearts Religious Education Program will hold a Baby Shower for Catholic Charities of Merrimack Valley. Gifts of blankets, bottles, diapers, bibs, clothing, lotions, etc. may be brought or monetary donations can also be made. Parishioners are invited to bring the unwrapped items or donations to the Church on the weekend of March 12 and 13th.

FOOD PANTRY Open: Mon-Wed-Fri 8:00am to 10:45am

Our food pantry is open 3 days a week and serves 1000 families a month. Please consider bringing in ONE item each time you come to Mass. In recent weeks, people using the food pantry have asked for several items which we don't have. These items include 1-1b cans of coffee, mayonnaise, 1-1b boxes of sugar, ketchup, razors, paper towels, toilet paper, tooth paste & brushes, marshmallow fluff, jelly, and mustard. If you want to donate any of these items, you may either bring them to Church or drop them off at the Pastoral Center. Thank You! We have an elderly parishioner who lives at the Merrivista in Haverhill who needs a ride to any Saturday or Sunday Mass. If you can provide a ride, please call Bill LaPierre at 978-373-1281.

Boston Archdiocese Eucharistic Congress for College Students and Young Adults

Attention College Students and Young Adults: Come join hundreds of your peers from across the city of Boston on April 1st & 2nd for our fourth annual Archdiocese of Boston Eucharistic Congress for College Students and Young Adults. Meet new people, listen to dynamic speakers, pray in new ways, get involved in Christian service, celebrate Mass with Cardinal Seán O'Malley, enjoy delicious food catered by the Italian restaurants of the North End, and participate in an evening Eucharistic procession. All this will be taking place at Sacred Heart and St. Leonard's Churches in the North End of Boston. For more information please visit our website at www.eucharisticcongress.org.

News . . . Colin Blute, Grade 7, won the Sacred Hearts School Geography Bee in January. He then took a written exam to determine eligibility for the next level. We are so pleased and proud to announce that Colin has qualified to complete at the State Level in April. We wish him luck ! . . . Congratulations to our Academic Bowl Teams and their coaches for a great season. Our Senior Team was 1st runner-up in the Bowl Championship on March 3 . . . Each Wednesday morning, the Faculty gathers for prayer. On Ash Wednesday we introduced our lenten theme whcih revolves around the image of « The Potter and the Clay ». The simple, yet powerful image of the potter molding the clay reminds us of our fragility, but more importantly of our hidden potential to become a beautiful vessel. We will be sharing this with the students as we move along our Lenten journey. Our outreach/service is focused on our parish food pantry.
