ON-LINE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ST BIRGITTA AND THE BIRGITTINE ORDER © Stephan Borgehammar and Ulla Sander Olsen, 13 March 2003 Please send comments and corrections to [email protected]

Liturgical texts and books connected with St Birgitta and the Birgittine Order.

This area is rather poorly researched, so the list is necessarily incomplete. However, the Offices of St Birgitta by Birger Gregersson and Nils Hermansson were carefully edited 200202-28. Contents: 1. `The short prayers taught by Our Lady to St Birgitta' 2. The Office of Birger Gregersson 3. The Office of Nils Hermansson 4. Other Liturgical Texts

Liturgical Texts 1. `The short prayers taught by Our Lady to St Birgitta.' Inc.: `Jesu fili Dei omnium conditor adjuva me ...', `Jesu fili Dei qui coram judice tacuisti ...', `Jesu fili Dei qui ligatus fuisti ...' (thus in the English Primers, acc. to Hoskins, p. 115).

These prayers usually appear in Latin in the English Primers which contain the Fifteen Oes in Latin (see the document Fifteen Oes). Furthermore, they appear in English in at least two of the Primers which contain the Fifteen Oes in English, but without attribution to St Birgitta:

1536 ¤ Rouen, 1536. ¤ `Jesu Son of God, maker of all things help me ...', `Jesu Son of God, which heldest thy peace before a judge ...', `Jesu Son of God, which wast bounden rule my hands ...' Hoskins 124 (incipits quoted p. 166). 1555 ¤ London: John Wayland, 4 June 1555. ¤ `Jesu the Son of God, and maker of all things, help me now ...', `Jesu the Son of God, which kept silence before the Judge hold my tongue ...', `Jesu the Son of God, which was bounden, govern my members ...' Hoskins 207 (incipits quoted p. 187).

Birgero della presentation [Le Vasseur], Brigittano fiamingo`. On her request he sends her the Officum proprium of St. Birgitta and St. Catharina of Sweden, which he has had printed in Rome, for the Birgittine nuns in Italy. P. Joachim [Desruelles, a Sto Nicholao] has given him the opportunity to do them this favour. Therefore he will soon have printed the Holy Rule for the nuns, with all the Additions, dictated and prescribed by Christ's own mouth, and those which Petrus of Alvastra, St. Birgitta's confessor, wrote on His express order. For their consolation he sends them, or will send them as soon as possible, the Prologue of the Rule, in which the nuns can see all the privilegies etc. of the order, 'le quali sono cosi grandi e estraordinarie, che non si puoe dire con uerità che sia Religione o instituto nel mondo cosi diuinamente beneficiato com e il nro'). 1651?(2 Febr. 1651: Letter in Spanish to the Abbess 'del Convento di nuessa Senora de los Angeles de la Orden de S. Brigida, Vailladolid` from 'Fr. Joachim Brigitt. ' [Desruelles, à Sto Nicolao], Brussels. He apologizes that it has taken so long to send the Officia Propria of the order, which the Abbess has asked for little more than a year ago. He has had difficulties in getting permission to have them printed: Their P. Procurator general [P. Birger Le Vasseur à Presentatione probably] has written to him from Rome, that the Congregation of Rites does not allow Officia Propria not contained in Breviarium Romanum, except on Kings' petitions and that with difficulty. At the end of the year he went to Flanders, where he succeeded in exhibiting his reasons in detail and also got the opinions of the Doctors of the Universities of Douai and Leuven. Having taken up the negotiations again, he finally got the permission to print and use the Officia Propria). (Valladolid, Archives of the Birgittine nuns). 1651?(25 May 1651: Letter to Abbess Maria del SS. mo Sacramento of the Birgittine nunnery of Valladolid from P. Joachim [Desruelles] à S. Nicolao, from Brussels: £ He has received two letters from Valladolid, dated Nov. 29th 1650 and March 3rd 1651. In the second he has received the Officia Propria of the Conception of Our Lady and of the Most H. Sacrament. 'tambien nuessos Padres de Alemania me han embiado nuessos officios proprios de la Religion' [thus co-operation!], already printed last year; he will revise it all and add the officia which he just received from Valladolid. He has already ordered the printing, and hopes it will be finished by August. He will send her 100 copies. £ He has sent them some books which do not seem to have arrived yet. See my Chronicle of Plessis]. The nuns will also receive the 'quaderno` with the Missas proprias and the anniversaries, `con el rrezo proprio, con las oraciones y sus dias`. £ Concerning the Breviaria which they have asked him to send together with the 'quadernos

del rezo proprio', then he asks them to let him know if they want them in quarto, octavo, or duodecimo, as the librarians say. At the same time he will send them printed pictures of their H. Mother St. Birgitta, St. Catherine of Sweden and of the Crucified, as He was revealed to St. Birgitta, and also of the Venerable Mother Marina de Escobar 'conforme a la nuestra que V. R. me ha embiado`. Do they want them printed on paper or on parchment and in colours (`illuminadas`)?) £ (Valladolid, Archives of the Birgittine nuns) 1653. Officia propria SS. Ord. On the 5th of the month he has through the same lady sent her two Breviaria in 4. o and given her 100 booklets of the Missae Propriae of the order 'reduzido al Breuiario Romano' and 15 booklets of the `missas proprias correspondentes al rezo proprio`. He has added a book containing the Revelations of St. Birgitta, printed in Cologne, with a compendium of the bulls, privilegies and indulgences of the Order [see above 1628], together with the lives of St. Hildegard and of St. Elisabeth and of the Saints of the Northern regions, thus also many saints of the order. D. Marina de Escobar are finished, and to buy more printed pictures of St. Birgitta and St. Catherine, her daughter, which he also will send to Valladolid with Senora Isabella. £ In the middle of May, last year, he sent a letter to her, adressed to Balthasar Bellero, bookdealer in Madrid, through Hieronymo Verdussen, bookdealer in Antwerpen, who on his orders should send her three books, one of which was the Cologne edition of St. Birgitta's Revelations, the second a book about the lives of the saints of the Northern Regions etc. [=Vastovius], and the 3rd one a book of Zypaeus, about the Canonic Law, containing much about the birgittine order). Petition by the sisters of Syon Abbey to the Pope. Since their arrival in Lisbon, the nuns of Syon have, like the monks, adopted the Roman Breviary; they now ask permission to celebrate the Officia propria of the order, adapted to the Roman Breviary, just like they do in other monasteries of the same Order, which use the Roman Breviary, especially in Belgium. These Officia have been disposed and accomodated to the Roman rites by Bishop Richard Pauli-Stravius, President and Apostolic Visitator 'pro Viris et Sororibus

praefati ordinis', see above 1650-1651] who use the Roman Breviary, as can be seen from the printed edition titled 'Officia Propria Sanctorum et aliarum Festivitatum Ordinis Sancti Salvatoris vulgo Sanctae Birgittae Romano Breviario accommodata'.
