`Buddhism in the New Century'

In honour of The 96th Birthday Celebration of His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, Sangharaja of Kingdom of Thailand 1-3 October 2552 (CE 2009)

Background His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, Sangharaja of Kingdom of Thailand (Suvahana Mahthera) has contributed to studying, disseminating and practice of Buddhism. His roles place a great importance in Thai Buddhism and abroad. His contributions can be seen in various forms such as his religious activities, sangha administration, writings, lectures, dhamma-talks, teachings on meditation and his inspiring character. Truly, with his numerous roles and contributions, His Holiness is one of the great persons who has contributed to the progress of Buddhism, people and the nation of this century. His legacies of teaching and practice of Buddhism are vital messages for our generations. On this unprecedented auspicious occasion of the 96th birthday on the third day of October, 2009 the Executive Committee for the 96th Birthday Celebration of His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, Sangharaja of Kingdom of Thailand officially appointed by the Prime Minister of Thailand resolved to organize numerous activities as a part of celebration of this auspicious day. To name a few: nationwide religious ceremonies, biographical exhibitions, and international and national conferences in honour of His Holiness the Sangharaja. On the part of international conference in honour, the main theme is `Buddhism in the new century.' This conference will be an unprecedented Buddhist conference in Thailand because the lingua franca of the conference will be in Pali, the language of the Lord Buddha (instead of English!). This will not only show the importance of Pali language in preserving Theravada Buddhism, but it will serve as an international platform where Pali scholars can share and learn the interpretation and explanation of Buddhism for wider and right understanding. His Holiness is not only the chief administrator of the whole Sangha in the Kingdom of Thailand but he is a well known Pali scholar, Dhamma preacher and meditation master, with hundreds of books, ranging from Pali grammar to wider Dhamma books, to his credit. This international Pali conference, therefore, will be a befitting tribute to His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, Sangharaja of Kingdom of Thailand. In order to materialize this unique conference in honour, the Executive Committee for the 96th Birthday Celebration of His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, Sangharaja of Kingdom of Thailand in collaboration with Mahamakut Buddhist University, Mahachulalongkornraja-vidyalaya University, Office of the National Buddhism, World
