Police Commissioner Mal Hyde today took possession of a new vehicle. But it's not just any new car - it's the Lenco Bearcat, a purpose-built armoured vehicle. The US built, high-tech vehicle is designed to help police respond to a terrorist threat, hostage incident or high risk situation where ballistic protection is needed. It is designed to recover seriously injured people who may be helpless and unprotected at a major incident. The $400,000 Bearcat was provided to SAPOL by the Australian Government as part of its ongoing strategy to increase the nation's counter-terrorism capability. Commissioner Hyde said he's pleased to have the Bearcat in the garage.Commissioner Hyde receives the keys to the new Bearcat from the Federal Attorney General "We are thankful to the Federal Government for providing the Bearcat to SAPOL, along with other police jurisdictions." "Using the same equipment across jurisdictions ensures our national capability is strengthened." "Police skilled in using the Bearcat will be able to travel anywhere in Australia to assist in times of need, and use familiar equipment," Mr Hyde said. "The Bearcat won't be staying under wraps." "It will be available on a day-to-day basis for training operations and to move officers into high risk incidents where there is a real possibility they, or the public, may be injured." "The Bearcat is a highly capable vehicle designed to retrieve people in dangerous situations where firearms may be involved." "This will be particularly useful to our Special Tasks and Rescue (STAR) Group." "STAR group has attended 94 high risk incidents in the 12 months to May 2011." "Sixty-three incidents involved the use or threatened use of firearms." "Depending on the circumstances this vehicle could be used to move officers to a more tactical position than may otherwise been possible. "The Bearcat provides a greater level of protection to both the police and public," he said. The Lenco Bearcat is a specially-constructed V-8 diesel, turbo-powered 4WD.
