Welcome to KIDSTEPS Family and Children's Center! We hope that our programs at FCC will be educational and fun for the whole family. Our center offers a unique, safe and accepting environment for parents/caregivers and their children to participate in small group activities and workshops. All program instructors accept and respect diverse needs and learning styles. Please call if you would like information about community resources, child development, parenting or other program needs. We are looking forward to meeting your family and providing support as we enjoy the Autumn weather!

We ask that you please share the information in this brochure with others who may be interested in attending classes and/or joining our mailing list.

KIDSTEPS Family & Children's Center Policies

Attendance: Please contact our office (in advance, if possible) to let us know if you or your child is unable to attend workshop or class that you are registered for. Some of the workshops/classes may have a minimum number of participants required to hold the program and we want to give those on our waiting list the opportunity to come. Fees: Registration and payment is due in advance of the workshop/class. Please make checks payable to SARAH, Inc. Please Note: No one will be turned away due to an inability to pay. Scholarships and reduced fees are available for families/ caregivers. Please contact us for more information. Refunds: Refunds will only be given if a workshop/class has been cancelled by our office. Inclement Weather: In the event of inclement weather, please call our office at (203) 318-3692, ext. 2 to determine whether a workshop or class has been cancelled. All cancellations will be made by our office at least 2 hours PRIOR to the start time of the scheduled workshop/class.

The KIDSTEPS Family and Children's Center is a division of SARAH, Inc. Our mission is to meet the needs of families concerned about their children's social, emotional, physical development and educational success. SARAH, Inc. and all of our programs do not necessarily promote or endorse any particular viewpoint or service. We provide a therapeutic, integrated, and inclusive learning experience for differently-abled children (ages birth to 12), their families, and typical peers.

Baby Sign: Enhancing Communication for Infants, Toddlers and Preschool Children (Birth to 4 yrs. old)

Research indicates that infants and toddlers can communicate before they are ready or able to speak. Exposing young children, including those with language delays and disabilities, to another language (Baby Sign) is an effective and positive bridge to recognize their often challenging, non-verbal needs. Parents/caregivers must attend classes with their child.

Children learn best when all of their senses are engaged. Join us in this facilitated playgroup for children ages 2-3 and their caregivers as we participate in a variety of sensory motor play and learning activities. Sessions will include opportunities for discussion, questions and follow up suggestions.

Social Skills Group

These small group sessions enable children to interact and learn new skills with a group of appropriately matched peers. All children who may benefit from a social skills group are welcome to participate in these sessions.

* SARAH, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency. Fees cover basic costs of workshops. Additional contributions are tax deductible and help support scholarships and continuing programs and are greatly appreciated.

This workshop educates families on the importance of planning for the future of their child or dependent with special needs. It will address important issues such as special needs trusts, protecting government benefit eligibility, guardianship and conservatorship/guardian ad litem, financial security, funding options, and letters of intent. The discussion of these vital issues is intended to ensure not only lifetime care but also quality of life for your loved one. It provides a unique opportunity to learn from people who have personal experience with these same issues.

We are pleased to announce the return of Parent Chat. We are in the process of collaborating with the Connecticut Family Support Network (CTFSN) to provide multiple locations for these group meetings. Please call us at FCC if you are interested in attending this group and we will notify you as soon as a schedule of days/times has been established. Free childcare is provided for parents attending the group

Practical Parenting

A series of workshops presented by Barb Baycroft

Through structured activities and group discussions, parents/caregivers will have an opportunity to share experiences, explore new ideas, and (with the support of others) discover that: Parenting may not be the easiest job, but it can be the most rewarding! Each workshop offers two sessions, so that you can choose the time that best suits your schedule. All workshops are $8.00* per session.

Adult Classes/Workshops (continued)

CPR & First Aid Training

Dates: Wednesday, October 13th Time: 5:30 - 8:30pm Fee: $50 per person REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 10/05/10 Instructor: Julie O'Connell, Certified American Heart Assoc. Instructor

This Heart Saver CPR class teaches how to perform Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on adults, children, and infants, as well as how to help someone who is choking. The program is designed for families, friends, and members of the community who want to learn CPR. First Aid training is included in this class. Participants will be mailed a CPR certificate (already included in the session fee) after completion of the 3 hour training.

Bedtime Battles - Dealing with your child's sleep issues

Dates: Tuesday, November 9th Time: 9:30 - 11:30am (Session 1) 6:30 - 8:30pm (Session 2) Fee: $10 per session Instructor: Barb Baycroft

Is bedtime a battle? Does your child get up constantly in the middle of the night? Do you spend hours returning your child back to bed? Are you losing sleep over your child's sleeping (or non-sleeping) habits? You are NOT alone! Come join us in structured activities and group discussions to help you find strategies that work for your family as you deal with your child's sleep issues.

Mealtime Madness - Developing positive mealtimes out of chaos!

Are you tired of chasing your child around the dinner table trying to get him or her to eat? Are the words "I'm not eating THAT!" part of every meal? Is your dinner table a battleground? Come to this workshop (held in two classes) and turn "ooh, yuck!" into "ooh, yeah!!!" Learn to understand the challenges we all face and find creative solutions to take the fight out of food through structured activities and discussions.

Understanding ADHD - Presented by CPAC

This training is designed to help educate participants about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and its implications for your child's success in school. Participants will receive information about ADHD, including behavior support and instructional strategies. NOTE: All participants must register IN ADVANCE through CPAC. Therapeutic Horseback Riding

Hilltop Therapeutic Riding Program, Inc. is a non-profit program that offers therapeutic horseback riding, education about horses, and the opportunity to learn how to care for and develop a relationship with a specific horse. Offered for individuals with cognitive, neurological and psychological concerns. Riding instruction is offered to individuals from the age of 4 years old and up (no one is too old!). Individuals may be subject to an evaluation by program instructors prior to riding. Fees are competitive. Hilltop TRP is located on the grounds of the Killingworth Equestrian Center at 552 North Roast Meat Hill Road in Killingworth, CT 06419.
