JOB TITLE: Police Captain JOB CODE: 15.22 GRADE: 27 CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: To direct subordinates within span of control and to coordinate their efforts for organization, productivity, and the continuing control over their activities in order to ensure quality work output. Must proactively interact with all Division Commanders to ensure a comprehensive effort to accomplish Department goals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, law enforcement, police administration, or related field and at least two (2) years experience as a Police Lieutenant with the Sarasota Police Department; or the equivalent in education, training, and experience, which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License is required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: · Knowledge of State laws and local ordinances. · Knowledge of police administration, methods and tactics. · Ability to command respect of subordinates. · Ability to train, direct and supervise others. · Ability to effectively communicate with the media. · Ability to work cooperatively with other agency employees and other municipal employees, and to deal judiciously and courteously with the general public. · Ability to address diverse personnel issues. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: · Directs and supervises the activities and personnel of assigned division of the Police Department. · Instructs subordinates as to work assignments and procedures. · Interprets new laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations for subordinates. · Plans the geographic sectors and assigns subordinates. · Directs criminal and administrative investigations. · Ensures that Lieutenants and Sergeants inspect personal appearance and equipment of subordinates. · Reviews work and actions of subordinates, commends or corrects as necessary. · Ensures compliance of accreditation standards within division. · Responds to all calls of a serious nature related to the work of the division/position. · Prepares and monitors the budget at the divisional level. · Contributes to the policy/decision-making process within the department. · The intent of this class description is to provide a representative summary of the types of duties and responsibilities that would be required of classifications given this title and shall not be construed as a declaration of the specific duties and responsibilities of any particular position.

Incumbent may be required to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this job description.

PUBLIC CONTACT: Considerable contact with the general public. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Considerable independent judgment exercised. Work reviewed by the Police Chief or designated representative on the basis of observation, conferences and written reports. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Directs and supervises subordinate employees in assigned position. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires reasonable physical effort. Position requires visual acuity to safely operate a motor vehicle, use of firearms, prepare and review written records and hearing sufficient to accurately perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Incumbent is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, job hazards, and noise. Incumbent must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and be able to convey information accurately and quickly. ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS: Under the direction of and responsible to the Police Chief or designated representative.
