Sydney Children's Hospitals Network Provisional Fellow Statement of Duties The Burns Unit ­ (Westmead) Introduction: The Burns Unit Paediatric Provisional Fellow position involves a clinical role within the Burns Unit as well as a leadership and educational role. This position provides an opportunity to develop skills important for a consultant role in the inpatient and outpatient setting, with the support from the Burns Unit Consultants as needed. The Fellow also works closely with many of the other clinical teams in inpatient and outpatient care both clinically and strategically. The education role includes clinical supervision within the Burns Unit as well as the hospital wide education program. Provide effective service to paediatric patients with increasing autonomy, while developing expertise in medical/surgical practice, in a complex clinical environment. 2. Assist in ensuring that the service provided to patients and their families in New South Wales and beyond is of the highest quality, sustainable, flexible and transparent. 3. Develop clinical proficiency in the care of children with complex health problems Essential MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible to be registered with the relevant medical board. Registered with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as an Advanced Trainee or equivalent. 36 months experience in relevant subspecialty or equivalent preferable and a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in burns management. Emergency Management of Severe Trauma Course (EMST / ATLS) (Provider / Instructor) and Emergency Management of Severe Burns Course (Provider / Instructor) Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals. Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff. Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal. Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in Paediatric Junior Staff matters, representation on behalf of the Hospital, participation in Hospital Committees preferable. Responsibilities: Clinical Workload Completion of clinical requirements for basic surgical training. Clinical knowledge of multidisciplinary management of burns. Familiarity of surgical procedures relevant to burns management. Familiarity with and competence in assisting in operations relevant to burns management. . Insertion of intravenous cannulae. Passage of Nasogastric tubes. Insertion of urinary catheters . Assistance at surgical operations relevant to burns management.

The delivery of burns care in the outpatient and inpatient setting including the assessment and initial management of children with burns including the assessment of the airway and signs of peripheral vascular compromise in the circumferential burn of the limb or chest/abdomen including abdominal compartment syndrome. This applies to the paediatric population between birth and 16 years. The ability to undertake clinical and laboratory research under supervision including the requirement to develop and submit an ethics applications, present at scientific meeting and prepare papers for publication. To occasionally participate in the Plastic oncall roster as per required by the department. Communication and Team work Work as part of, and contribute to a multidisciplinary team. Deal with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature. Demonstrate ability to exercise discretion, sensitivity and maintain confidentiality. Demonstrate leadership within a team environment and actively contributes to team activities including proactively participates in team meetings and decision making processes. Demonstrate ability to initiate and undertake decisions with patients and their families regarding their hospitalisation and progress. Communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with consultants regarding the patients under care. Education and Training To participate in ongoing professional development activities and to encourage similar practices in departmental staff. This includes regular attendance at hospital education activities such as Grand Rounds and Clinicopathological conferences. To contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. To demonstrate an interest in teaching, understanding and application of research principles To oversee junior trainees and medical students, working well within a team To participate in ongoing review of their clinical practice as per conditional registration guidelines To participate in continuing medical education and professional development as covered by the supervision arrangements stipulated by the Medical Board and maintaining his/her professional competence. Research To contribute to the research activities of the hospital and department Critically assess research literature and develop to become a productive investigator. Gain formal instruction in statistics, epidemiology, research design and critical reading and writing skills. Gain formal guidance in the design, implementation, completion and submission of research projects. Assist with the preparation of grant applications. Deliver formal instruction competently in teaching and presentation skills, including teaching oneonone, small groups, large groups, peer and supervisor review. Supervise and teach other junior medical officers attached to the department/team. Critically assess research literature and develop to become a productive investigator. Gain formal instruction in statistics, epidemiology, research design and critical reading and writing skills. Gain formal guidance in the design, implementation, completion and submission of research projects. Assist with the preparation of grant applications.

Deliver formal instruction competently in teaching and presentation skills, including teaching oneonone, small groups, large groups, peer and supervisor review. Supervise and teach other junior medical officers attached to the department/team. Become involved with clinical Burns unit projects and research activity in the Wound Healing Laboratory and the Animal research laboratory. Clinical Leadership & Risk Management To participate in clinical and/or organisational committees as determined from time to time by the Term Supervisor or the Chief RMO. To represent the Department, Division or Hospital at fundraising or public relations activities as required. To support the evaluation of Hospital Services in relation to present and future needs and make recommendations to the Department Head. To develop and participate in Department and Hospital quality activities. To adopt safe work practices as recommended by the management and raise any occupational health and safety issues of concern with the relevant authorities. Safe work practices include maintenance of a hazard free environment for patients, visitors and staff, reporting any potential hazards which cannot be rectified personally, attendance at and participation in educational programs with regard to fire safety and infection control and adherence to hospital policies and procedures regarding fire safety and infection control. To develop and participate in Department and Hospital quality activities. PERFORMANCE REVIEW To be done 6monthly with your nominated supervisor, or as stipulated by the relevant specialty college. ON CALL RESPONSIBILITIES The Provisional Fellow position is remunerated at the award salary of Registrar (year commensurate with your years of service), plus award entitlements, and is one that is designated a "training" position. Accordingly, "unrostered overtime" is not associated with this role. Any additional time you choose to allocate to your training over and above your rostered hours is deemed to be time spent at your own volition outside of your rostered hours and will not attract payment. Any other arrangements need to be confirmed in writing with your head of department. You may be rostered for "rostered overtime" as a separate arrangement to your position as Provisional Fellow; should you be so rostered, payment will be made in accordance with award conditions" All Sydney Children's Hospitals Network staff are required to comply with the relevant policies of NSW Health, SCHN and other relevant legislative and statutory requirements.
