Technical ingredient data sheet

This formula utilizes eight (9) different lightening mechanisms for the treatment of Melanogenesis:

1. Alpha Arbutin

Alpha Arbutin Origin: Switzerland Recognized as the safest, most effective skin whitening compound, this ingredient is not to be mistaken for Beta Arbutin (commonly known as Arbutin). Most manufacturers use Arbutin, because it is far less expensive and easier to source than Alpha-Arbutin. A patented ingredient manufactured in Switzerland, Alpha-Arbutin has shown extra ordinarily rapid and safe skin whitening properties. Alpha-Arbutin is a patented synthetic mono-substance that acts as a tyrosinase inhibitor. Alpha-Arbutin shows impressive in-vitro tyrosinase inhibition on human cells. Alpha Arbutin blocks epidermal melanin biosynthesis by inhibiting enzymatic oxidation of Tyrosine and Dopa. A skin-lightening study on 80 women demonstrated that an emulsion containing 1% Alpha-Arbutin results in a faster and more pronounced skin lightening effect after one month when compared with other commonly used mono-substances at 1% each. Alpha Arbutin acts faster and more efficiently than existing single components, minimizes liver spots and reduces the degree of skin tanning after UV exposure. In conclusion Alpha-Arbutin acts faster, safer and more efficiently than commonly used single components.

Function: Inhibits tyrosinase activity

2. AcromaxylTM IS

Function: Inhibits tyrosinase activity

AchromaxylTMIS a patented, botanical extract, with clinically proven efficacy on brightening skin colour and age spots. AchromaxylTMIS is a fermented and hydrolyzed Brassica Napus extract. The protein fraction of the extract is hydrolyzed and then submitted to a controlled fermentation process. These hydrolyzed and fermented proteins are responsible for a remarkable lightening efficacy. Decreases tyrosinase activity in vitro. Lightens skin pigmentation and significantly reduces skin imperfections (brown spots). In-vitro efficacy

2. Decreases melanin content by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase enzyme. In-Vitro clinical testing showed a 36% decrease in melanin content after 24 hours. On age spots use twice daily.

3. GigaWhiteTM

Function: Inhibits tyrosinase activity

Giga White® is a patented skin lightener and brightener as well as an age spot and melasma reducer. Its patented combination of natural, plant-based extracts work by means of an ultra gentle mechanism of melanocyte decreasing action. It has a significant skin whitening and free radical scavenging ability and works very well at suppressing and eliminating concentrated melanin when used for a duration of 12 weeks. Its composition is a host of effective antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, skin lightening extracts which penetrate the skin extremely well. Giga White® at 5% has been proven to have a significant skin brightening effect with regular topical use. It was additionally shown to reduce the color and size of age spots in a twelve (12) week "in vivo" study. This showed that the products had at least a dual activity: the blocking of enzyme receptors and the direct inhibition of tyrosinase. Giga White® is an extract of seven organically grown Swiss plants. All extracts have the ability to inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for the production of melanin or skin pigment. These extracts are combined in a proprietary and synergistic ratio to maximize their activity and produce an even more effective compound. The seven organically grown Swiss alpine plants which comprise Giga White® are as follows:

Malva Sylvestris Extract Mentha Piperita Leaf Extract Primula Veris Extract Alchemilla Vulgaris Extract Veronica Officinalis Extract Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract Achillea Millefolium Extract

Giga WhiteTM Studies

All the extracts which compose Giga White® have the ability to inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for the production of melanin or skin pigment. These extracts are combined in a proprietary and synergistic ratio to maximize their activity and produce an even more effective compound.

Pilot In Vivo Skin Whitening Study With Giga WhiteTM The study was conducted on Asian subjects, ages 25-55, with dark spots on face and applied Gigawhite® to each side of the face for 3 months. Skin Whitening Results Objective measurements of changes in skin color were obtained with the Minolta Meter. A significant decrease in skin color was observed after six and twelve weeks. A 15.3% change was observed after 12 weeks. Age Spot Evaluation Results were observed with respect to size and darkness of age spots in comparison to surrounding skin. After 12 weeks there was a 28.6% decrease in the color of age spots.

Giga WhiteTM Studies

After 12 weeks of use, Gigawhite® shows significant lightening activity without observing any particular irritation. At 12 weeks, GigawhiteTM shows significant reduction of age-spots color intensity.

4. MelFade®-J

Function: Inhibits tyrosinase activity

MELFADE®-J is the latest generation in skin lightening agents. It is plant-derived from Bearberry extract whose primary mechanism of action is tyrosinase inhibition combined with Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate. MELFADE®-J inhibits the progress of skin darkening and effectively reduces existing pigmentation. MELFADE®-J contains the following botanical skin lightening ingredients: Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi Leaf Extract Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate

Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate will be transformed by the skin enzymes into Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C), an anti-oxidant and a cofactor for an enzyme crucial in the synthesis of collagen. As an anti-oxidant agent, vitamin C scavenges and destroys reactive oxidizing agents and other free radicals. Because of this ability, it provides important protection against damage induced by UV radiation. Improves skin elasticity, decreases wrinkles by stimulating collagen synthesis, reduces redness, promotes wound healing and suppresses cutaneous pigmentation.

5. Tego® Cosmo-C Function: Inhibits tyrosinase activity

TEGO® Cosmo C 250 (1-Methylhydantoine-2-imide) is a natural amino acid derivative which are ubiquitous in mammalian cells and known to have an important biological function as they regulate e.g. cellular growth and transformation. The inherent buffering properties of TEGO® Cosmo C 250 help to maintain a desirable pH mantle on the skin. TEGO® Cosmo C 250 has been demonstrated to inhibit tyrosinase activity in melanocytes. It can be used in applications such as skin brightening products and fade creams to improve the clarity and eveness of skin tone. Three studies were performed to assess the functionality of TEGO® Cosmo C 250 as a skin brightener. Comparisons were made to both Kojic Dipalmitate and Kojic Acid. The data demonstrate that 0.1% TEGO® Cosmo C 250 is as effective as 1% Kojic Dipalmitate in the shorter term and even more effective with extended use.

6. Kojic Acid Dipalmitate

Function: Inhibits tyrosinase activity

Kojic Acid Dipalmitate has an excellent property of inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase present in the human skin so as to inhibit the melanin formation. It is more efficacious than straight kojic acid. Kojic Acid Dipalmitate can produce excellent effects in even toning the skin, fighting age spots, pregnancy marks, freckles as well as general skin pigmentation disorders of face and body. Kojic Acid Dipalmitate offers more efficacious skin lightening effects. Compared with kojic acid, Kojic Acid Dipalmitate markedly enhances the inhibitory effects on tyrosinase activity, which prohibits the formation of melanin.

7. Gamma Polyglutamic Acid

Function: Inhibits tyrosinase activity

A remarkably potent hydrating compound, Gamma PGA is a major breakthrough in the science of skincare. Originally discovered in marine jellyfish, it is derived from Natto, a Japanese soybean-based health food item dating back more than 1000 years. It is ten times more hydrating than Hyaluronic acid and far more elastic than collagen. It results in visible improvement in overall skin fitness, tone and texture. Gamma PGA hydrates and prepares the skin and helps the other skin lighteners penetrate. Its anti-inflammatory properties also decrease skin inflammation, thereby slowing down melanin secretion and reducing age spots. Advantages of Gamma Polyglutamic Acid also known as Y-PGA, Natto Gum, Plant Collagen and Phyto Collagen are:

Improves the appearance of fine lines and skin elasticity Facilitates skin exfoliation of old keratin Promotes clearance of stagnant melanin to brighten skin Increases the production of the natural moisturizing factor Anti inflammatories properties Slows down melanin secretion

8. Licorice Extract Function: Inhibits tyrosinase activity

Glabridin is the main ingredient in licorice extract. Glabridin has been studied for its inhibitory effect on pigmentation and is reported that glabridin inhibited tyrosinase activity of melanocytes without cytotoxicity. They further showed that UV-Binduced pigmentation and erythema were inhibited by topical application of 0.5% glabridin. The anti-inflammatory properties of glabridin were attributed to inhibition of superoxide anion production and cyclooxygenase activity. Studies have shown that it can provide a considerable skin brightening effect while remaining non-toxic to the melanin forming cells. Glabridin is found in very small traces and therefore it is important to ensure that the correct part of the licorice plant is used. Licorice's anti-inflammatory properties (due to inhibition of superoxide anion production and cyclooxygenase

9. Paper Mulberry Root Extract

Function: Inhibits tyrosinase activity

Paper Mulberry extract, is obtained from the root of Broussonetia kazinoki, Siebold. or B. papyrifera, Vent. Tabl. Regn. Veget. Or hybrids of both, family Moraceae. The plant roots from which paper mulberry was isolated were collected in Korea. A comparison of the tyrosinase inhibition of paper mulberry with kojic acid and hydroquinone reveals that the IC50 (ie, the concentration causing 50% inhibition of the activity of tyrosinase) is 0.396%, compared with 5.5% for hydroquinone and 10% for kojic acid. A patch test using 1% paper mulberry extract and found no significant irritation at either 24 hours or 28 hour

In conclusion

Paper Mulberry root bark extract was found to be a potent inhibitor of tyrosinase enzyme. The major constituent was identified and found to be fourteen times more potent than hydroquinone. Its chemical structure is shown below:
