Honor Groups Eligibility for Membership

Membership shall be based upon the following requirements:

1. Limited to regularly enrolled students of a public or private school who are officially enrolled in that school's performance organizations at the time of application, acceptance, rehearsal, and performance of their respective Honor Groups. If a student attends a school where performance ensembles/organizations are not offered, that student's private teacher may then recommend and endorse that student's application as long as the private teacher is a SCSBOA member in good standing. 2. Grade Level: 6th, 7th, 8th, & 9th graders may apply for all Middle School Honor Groups with the exception of Middle School Honor Jazz which is restricted to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. 9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th, graders may apply for all High School Honor Groups with the exception of High School Honor Jazz which is restricted to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. 9th graders for band/orchestra honor groups may audition for either Middle School or High School groups, but not both. 3. Limited to those students who file properly completed official Honor Group applications along with the required application fees by the postmark deadline. 4. Limited to those students whose directors/teachers are current SCSBOA members in good standing. 5. Limited to those students who can commit to attend all Honor Group rehearsals and performances without exception.

Acceptance

All students who audition will be notified of the audition results as soon as the final selection concerning membership is made. Please do not contact the SCSBOA office.

Note

By action of the Board of Directors of SCSBOA, recordings and/or photographs may be made available, but will not be included as part of the participation fee.

Membership Fee

If selected as a member of the band, orchestra, or jazz ensemble, each student is required to pay a participation fee of $80.00. The fee covers music and all operating expenses.

Requirements and instructions for accessing and downloading violin, viola, cello, and bass audition materials for the "2006 SCSBOA All-Southern High School Honor Orchestra": 1. 2. Go to the following webpage: http://www.calmusiced.com/honorgrps.htm Scroll down to the section marked "1. Required Scales-CODA/SCSBOA Honor Symphonies and All-State Orchestras" highlighted in light yellow and click on the link to download and print examples of three octave Major Scales for violin, viola, and cello; and a two octave Major Scale for bass (Adobe Acrobat Reader required). Though the actual Major Scales asked for at the time of audition are auditioner's choice, the bowing patterns, rhythm, and minimum tempi indicated in those examples must be adhered to. Scroll a little further down to the section that is highlighted in light blue and click on the appropriate CODA/ SCSBOA Honor Symphonies and All-State Orchestras pdf file links for violin, viola, cello, or bass to download and print. As indicated across the top of each page, "marked bowings" are only "suggested" and no penalty will be assessed for the use of alternate bowings. Students will be instructed to perform their excerpts* in order from top to bottom and will be given a uniform amount of time to do so. The auditioner will provide a "sight-reading" piece.

ALL STUDENTS should be prepared to perform ANY MAJOR SCALE plus a CHROMATIC SCALE throughout the entire practical range of their instrument in eighth-notes at quarter note equal to a minimum of 100 beats per minute.

Scales and articulations are auditioner's choice - two octaves, three when applicable.

All Piccolo, English Horn, and Eb Clarinet players must also audition on their major instrument: Flute, Oboe and Bb Clarinet, respectively and will be assigned one audition time period for one audition fee. Do not play any repeats on any of the following excerpts.
