Kei Kecil Islands, in Maluku Tenggara (Southeast Moluccas), is located in a unique geographical position, on the west bordering with the deep Banda Sea (Weber Deep, > 7,000 m), and on the east with Aru Basin (> 3,000 m). This area is known to have seasonal upwelling which enhance high productivity of the sea water.

There are 101 small islands forming the Kei Kecil Island complex with a variety of ecosystems: mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass beds. Earlier studies carried out in this area revealed that seagrass bed is very common here which consist of eight seagrass species. A rich variety of animals are known to live as seagrass associates which play important roles in the ecology of the seagrass environment.

This book, written by Agus Kusnadi, Udhi Eko Hernawan and Teddy Triandiza, describes the molluscan fauna commonly found in Kei Kecil Islands, with special reference to the Gastropods and Bivalves. Gastropods are usually found as epifauna living on the surface of the sediment or creeping onto the leaves of the seagrasses. Bivalves have two pieces of shells and usually found as infauna, spending most of their life submersed in the sediment. Altogether there are 80 species representing 25 families of gastropods are described, while for bivalves there are 23 species under 15 families. The authors come from the Marine Biological Conservation Station of Tual (UPT Loka Konservasi Biota Laut ­ Tual) under the administration of the Research Centre for Oceanography, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).
