R410A is becoming the refrigerant of choice for air-conditioning in residential and commercial applications. Extensive testing has shown significant benefits with systems using R410A, primarily due to the higher heat transfer coefficient and lower pressure drop.

Trends in Air-Conditioning and Heat Pump Applications

Compressors Designed for R410A Emerson Climate Technologies has always been at the forefront of new developments in the HVAC industry. In 1999,

Thermo-Expansion Valves and Pressostats Alco Controls has extended the existing product families to optimize the performance of systems using the high pressure refrigerant R410A. ThermoExpansion Valves of the TX3-Z and the TX6-Z families are hermetic valves, optimized for use in heat pumps and air-conditioning systems with nominal capacities between 0.8kW and 97kW. The Pressostat family PS3 has been extended for R410A by pressure range 6. This range is available with fixed setpoints between 10bar and 43bar. The selected switch point is defined by the customer and is built into the products at manufacturing.

EU Regulations The pressure to find more and more efficient solutions for air-conditioning and heat pump systems has intensified due to EU regulations and individual country legislation. R410A benefits the environment thanks to its higher efficiency, which reduces energy consumption, CO2 emissions, hence global warming. The higher capacity also enables the design of smaller, more compact equipments. R410A evaporates with a high heat transfer coefficient and low pressure drop.

Emerson Climate Technologies introduced in Europe a full range of R410A Copeland ScrollTM compressors that have met the stricter environmental safety guidelines and compulsory energy labelling for residential air-conditioning systems. Leading the way, Emerson Climate Technologies is now offering a complete R410A range of Copeland ScrollTM compressors for residential and commercial applications. The new range reaches from 1.3 to 40 Hp, introducing seven new compressor models, such as the 40 Hp model. All R410A compressors are designed for both air-conditioning

Electrical Control Valves The use of Electrical Control Valves for refrigerant expansion offers advantages compared to conventional technique. The valves can be used over a wide operating range. The EXM/L family is stepper motor driven for continuous mass flow modulation and covers the nominal R410A capacity from 5 to 23kW. EX4 to EX8 family is for more demanding applications, it offers positive shut-off function, while the nominal capacities range from 2 to 1000kW R410A. EX4 to EX7 are available as bi-flow versions too. This allows using them in heat pumps with reversible refrigerant flow. Other products from Alco Controls, released for use in R410A systems are: filter driers of the ADK, FDB and BFK series, MIA moisture indicators, OM4 oil management systems, FSY-43 fan speed controllers, PT4-50 pressure transmitters and BVA ball valves.

Why R410A? R410A is the refrigerant of choice to replace ozonedepleting refrigerants in air-conditioning, as it allows: · more efficient system · low TEWI (Total Equivalent Warming Impact) · more compact equipment · easy handling and recycling. R410A has a significantly higher capacity and moderately higher operating pressure than R407C / R134a, making it a cost-effective replacement for R407C / R134a in higher-efficiency air-conditioning and heat pump systems.
