TheCityofRiflehistoricallyhasreliedontheColoradoRiveranditsGrahamMesaWater TreatmentPlant(GMWTP)for85%ofitspotablesupply.WhentheCity'sexistingraw waterpumpstation,constructedinthelate1970s,begantosufferfromrepeated electricalandmechanicalfailures,theCityturnedtoSGMtodesignanewreliablefacility. Atthesametime,theCityacquiredanewpre-sedimentationpondtoreducepeak turbidityloadingstoitsGMWTP.SGMengineeredanew7.5-MGDrawwaterpump stationandriverdiversionstructureatthenewpondsite.Verticalturbinepumpswere outfittedwithpremiumefficiencymotorsandvariablefrequencydrives(VFDs)toprovide flexible,energy-efficientoperations.TheVFDsallowplantoperatorsto"dial-in"plantflow ratesbasedonproductionneedsand24-hourperdayplantoperations.Thishasreduced instantaneoushydraulicloadingratesandimprovedtheperformanceofthefacility's conventionaltreatmentprocess.Additionalprojectdesignfeaturestomaximize operationalperformanceincluded: · Amulti-depthintakeatthepumpstationtoallowforinfluentwaterqualityselection · Alargepre-sedpondwithariverdiversionstructureequippedwithgatestoallow bypassingofpossiblerivercontaminationevents · ApumpstationtelemetryandcontrolsystemintegratedwiththeGMWTPSCADA systemtoallowforautomated,remotecontrol · Anewmagneticflowmeterforimprovedwateraccounting · ApumpstationauxiliarydischargelinetoallowbypassingtheGMWTPduringpump stationstartuportroubleshootingevents · Asurge-anticipatingpressurereliefvalvetodampenanypressuretransients
