Itinerary (2010) YunNan Shangri-la to Tibet

Physical Grading: 1/5 (easy) Synopsis: This overland journey starts from Shangri-la, YunNan. You will travel on the scenic DianZang route into Nyingchi Prefecture and continue on the ChuanZang route to Lhasa, capital of Tibet. This route goes through the mountainous region of Northeastern Yunnan where 3 great rivers run parallel to one another; they are JinSha (Upper Yangtze) River, LanCang (Upper Mekong) River and Nu (or Salween) River. Experience the thrill of navigating treacherous roads with plunging cliffs by the side and be charmed by the serenity of little Tibetan villages along the way. At Nyingchi, a verdant forest region where Yarlung Tsangpo River flows, you will see many beautiful grasslands and lakes. Here, you may trek, have picnics or camp outdoor. Explore Lhasa, the centre of the Tibetan world. Complete your journey westward to see another side of Tibet. Visit Tashilungpo monastery in Shigatse, home of the Tibetan PanChen Lama, and stand in awe before the highest mountain on earth at the Everest Base Camp. Visit the sacred Namtso Lake, one of the most beautiful places of the Nyenchen Tanglha mountain ranges. This overland jeep route is 70-80% paved. There are good accommodation and food along the way. For those visiting Tibet for the first time, the gradual ascent of this route minimizes the effects of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) and is a good warm-up for wilder and harsher adventures! ____________________________________________________________________ Copyright ©2010.
