The International mobilisation of Investment Banking Leaders

In this era of austerity and mass unemployment, the financial services industry remains gripped by a severe shortage of talent. Excess capacity generated by the global financial crisis has all but evaporated as recovering Investment banks and ambitious new entrants mop up available talent. It is now clear, the gap between 'what the market demands' and 'the available skills' has widened considerably. The shortage of talent has created a rapid increase in the mobilization of executives across international borders. High growth financial services markets like Asia Pacific, Latin America and parts of Europe require new skills to leap frog traditional ways of doing business. The solution comes from recruiting executives away from the more established markets. Although it hasn't reached front page headlines yet, the migration of talented leaders away from centres such as London and New York is gaining momentum. Onerous regulatory measures and high tax regimes are compounding this effect. · In 2010, 35% of the 350 senior management executive searches completed by Sheffield Haworth's international offices secured candidates from outside the country of where the position was based. Net exporters of talent to emerging financial locations came from the traditional financial centres of London and New York. Key statistics · 31% of Asia Pacific external hires transferred to the region from London and US in 2010 compared to 8% in 2009. 37% of MENA external hires transferred to the region from London and US in 2010. Only 10% of London external hires transferred from outside the region in 2010 64% of banking executives interviewed in London indicated a willingness to relocate to a more tax and regulatory friendly environment. An estimated 14% of all movers tracked by Sheffield Haworth in 2010 changed location. Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney and Geneva seen as preferred locations to relocate. "Top bankers in Asia were given 40 per cent higher bonuses than those based in London. Asia is an extremely competitive area. This is where the pressure is on compensation." (The Financial Times) Stuart Gulliver, Group CEO, HSBC Skill sets in high demand by Investment Banks · Strong technical understanding of complex financial instruments Cross border origination and transactional experience Multi cultural and multi lingual Solution driven sales Leadership and proven relationships development. "We are seeing the war for talent across most of our markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and it is very acute in India and China, where a quarter of our staff are based." (BBC) Peter Sands, Group CEO, Standard Chartered
