Brief introductions for GCS

FY31AP GCS is similar to FY-3ZT GCS, the main functions include use of Google Earth mapping, telemetry data monitoring, flight attitude instrumentation, speed, altitude display, real time location, data recording and playback. Other features include 8 Waypoint setting, map loading management etc. By utilizing real time Google Earth functions, 3D flight routing as well as offline map display.

Software Computer requirements:

CPU frequency: 1GHz or more Memory capacity: 1G or more Hard disk space: At least 200MB free disk space. Operating System: Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Monitor: 1024x768 resolution or above. Computer Serial Port: Support USB serial converter or 9-pin port with 19200 baud rate or more. Other Peripherals: Keyboard, Mouse

The installation of GCS and USB-TLL Cable

a) Please download the latest GCS and USB-TLL driver from FY website: www.feiyudz.cn. b) Download and run the GCS set up software. c) Please don't change the title of the software. It is advisable to install the software in a folder on your desktop. d) Before using the GCS, you must have dotnetframework3.5 (download link available at: www.feiyudz.cn) and Google Earth (download link: http://www.google.com/earth/explore/products/plugin.html). e) It is advisable to uninstall your existing Google Earth soft and install the latest version. f) After doing the above, open the GCS software and you should see the following interface.

Note: If you can't open the GCS in via Vista or Windows 7 system, please find out the executable file,

and run it as the administrator.

INSTALLING THE HARDWARE

Step One: a) Double click on the driver icon and Install the USB-TTL driver. b) Restart your computer to activate the USB TTL driver programme. c) If installation fails, your system may be incompatible with the latest driver. Search for PL2303 chip driver via the Internet. Step Two: a) Connect the USB TTL Cable to your computer:

b) Confirm that the USB-TTL has been installed. Check your system via device manager:

Check the COM Port number for Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port:

Note COM number.

c) Re-insert and confirm the COM number is correct. d) Change the serial COM number if necessary. e) When connecting the Data Radio to the PC (via the USB TTL Cable), please use the Male-Male plug supplied with the Data Radio / GCS upgrade. Failure to use this plug will result in the Data Radio not functional:

Hardware connection instruction a) FY31AP provides a UART data radio interface, from which you can downlink telemetry data,

communicate and control your aircraft via your Ground Control computer:

Connecting FY31AP Directly To Computer:

Connect the UART port of FY31AP to the computer via UBS-TTL cable.

Connecting directly to the FY31AP allows you to carry out PID, control and flight parameter settings via the GCS software.

ii)

Press Connection button after plugging in FY31AP via UST TTL Cable:

The bottom of the GCS should confirmed the connection and is `reading':

After successful connection, you can change any of the parameter setting by pressing :

You will see the parameter settings that you can change on the FY31AP. More notes on this later in this manual:

You can also use the GCS to check the Flight Mode setting of your FY31AP:

2. By connecting your computer via data radio, you can: i) Debug and FY31AP Setting via your PC ii) Fly anywhere on the GCS Map via 8 Waypoints iii) Monitor and change flight attitude, PID settings, Control and Flight Parameters. iv) Monitor in real time the flight route via Google Map. 3. Three data radio options are available: i) FY606 2.4 Ghz 100mWatt Data Radio:

Air route display and Waypoint navigation

To set the air route display and Waypoint navigation, please carry out the following: a) Check and confirm that all hardware has been correctly installed. b) Double click and open the FY GCS programme:

c) Click the "Connection" button: d) The ComPort input and Baudrate pops up. If you have connected the USB TTL Cable and Data Radio, the Port Number will automatically be noted by the programme (example below = COM9). Click OK.

e) The programme will show a change from Connection to Shut Down, indicating successful connection to the Data Radio:

The bottom of the GCS will also show successful connection:

f) For the FY606, the Blue and Red LEDs must light up on both the Data radio connected to the Ground Station and Data Radio connected to FY31AP, which confirms the two are communicating.

g) For FY602, the Data Radio connected to FY31AP will light up Red, while the unit connected to the Computer will light up blue:

h) If the two data radios successfully linked, the GCS will show `reading':

If the two data radios fail to link, you will see the GCS indicate "Waiting". Check your Data radio connectors for any plug-in error.

After successful connection, press the Instrument button:

The Instrument interface will be shown. Tilting / Rolling the FY31AP will move this display:

GPS Lock and GCS Function

i) If you carry out the connection process after FY31AP has GPS lock, the GCS will automatically locate your position on the Google Earth Map:

You can also press the plane icon for the GCS to locate you plane:

iii)

Two Icons will be displayed. Your aircraft actual GPS location and a "Launch Point":

iv)

To Edit the Launch Point, press: The background will turn green. Make sure the "Moving Map Display" is NOT green:

Click on the person Icon of the Launch Point, which will turn black:

vii)

Left click your mouse and move the icon to the actual launch location:

viii)

Confirm the location by clicking on the Launch point The Icon will turn yellow:

Before flight - ALTITUDE INITIALIZATION

i) FY31AP will transmit only the relative altitude to the GCS (based on Barometric Sensor). ii) To get accurate altitude recording on the GCS, you need to initialize the altitude record. iii) Altitude initialization is important to enable 3D flight rendering on the GCS. iv) Failure to initialize properly may result in rendering a flight path outside the map layer.

v) Click "tools" in the menu bar:

vi) Choose `Altitude Initialization': vii) Then press the "Ctrl" key, move the cursor over the Launch Point on the map and click the left button to confirm the altitude:

Waypoint Setting

i)

Click the Waypoint Editing Button:

ii)

The button background will turn green, indicating waypoint editing has been activated.

iii)

The Waypoint setting window will be displayed. Enter the altitude you wish to maintain, and press Set:

iv)

Now click the Waypoint editing button - background will turn green:

v) Depress the "Ctrl" key, bring the cursor on the map and click where you want to set the waypoint. The waypoint number and distance flown will be noted. The FY31AP system supports 8 Waypoint setting.

vi) If you wish to edit the Waypoint position, simply bring the cursor over the Waypoint you want to edit:

Depress your mouse left button and move to the new waypoint location and let go. The new location will

automatically be updated on the Waypoint list. vii) You can also edit the Waypoint GPS position directly on to GPS Waypoint list by right clicking the mouse:

You can delete or empty all the Waypoints using the same function.

ix)

After setting waypoints route, click the Upload Button: This will upload the waypoints into the FY31AP autopilot.

x) You can check the uploaded waypoints in the FY31AP by pressing the waypoint download button. Check that the uploaded waypoints are correct:

To enable FY31AP to fly via the Waypoints you have set, Click this button: This saves the waypoints on to the FY31AP autopilot, ready for execution. Note: If you do not press this button, the waypoints will be lost when you power down the FY31AP.

You can remove all waypoints loaded in the FY31AP by clicking :

Cruising Target speed setting

i)

Press the Parameter Settings button:

Go to the "Flight Para" folder :

Refer Flight Setting and input the target cruising speed based on your aircraft previous flight experience for stable cruising flight (e.g. no stalling at 60 km/h), and press "Set".

iv)

Waypoint navigation flight ­ Checklist!

i) Please check your aircraft and on board equipment before taking off. Have a check list to ensure critical components like stabilized flight servo direction, flight modes, etc. are all correct. Confirm that your 3 way switch or assigned dial knob can move the flight mode display to "Navigation", which is the setting required to activated flight by Waypoints.

OTHER SETTINGS VIA GCS DownLink rate setting

a) You can set the output telemetry data rate by choosing "downlink data rate". b) The higher the value, the faster the data transfer will be. This helps improve the refresh rate of the Hornet OSD data overlay and GCS telemetry display. c) However, do not put the value too high. The large data radio output will block incoming data from your GCS, which may be critical for flight control. d) The recommended setting is 2 Hz: e) However, if you are using an OSD for telemetry instead of the GCS / Data radio, the downlink rate should be increased to 10 Hz to improve the telemetry output on your video display.

Uplink Control Rate

a) The "uplink control rate" is used to set the rate with which the FY31AP receive commands from the GCS. b) The higher the value, the better the real time flight control will be. c) However, a high value will slow down the downlink communication with the aircraft. d) The recommended Uplink Control Rate is 10 Hz.

RC DataLink Switch

a) When using an FY3ZT Remote Adaptor (see topic in the last chapter of this manual), you have to click the "RC Data Link Switch" button to make it turn green before the system can function.

b) If you are NOT using the FY3ZT Remote Adapter, please make sure this button remains Gray in colour, or else you won't be able to control your aircraft via your on board RC Receiver:

Flight parameter setting

a) Tgt Spd: Set the flight cruising speed. FY31AP will compare the current flight speed with the set target speed, and send control signal to the ESC to maintain this target speed. b) Tgt ALT: Set the target altitude for the aircraft. You can change the altitude in real time. Please make sure your cruising speed in enough to prevent stall during fixed altitude flight. c) Circle Radius: Set your preferred circling radius in meter. d) Throttle Hold: This value is automatically calculated by the system. You do not to manually input any value to this setting.

Gyro Initialization

i) ii) iii) You can initialize gyro via the FYGCS software. Simply click on the "Zero Gyro" button. Make sure the FY31AP or aircraft is kept perfectly still for 20 seconds during the gyro initializing process. iv) Click "Check Gyro" when initialization is complete.

PID Parameter Setting

i) ii) iii) For most aircraft, the default PID Settings are good enough for autonomous flight. If you are an inexperienced pilot who have not done PID adjustments before, we do not recommend you changing the default value, as an error in setting can result in a crash. Turn control: a) Attitude Control ­ the amount of attitude roll angle control during a turning maneuver. b) Attitude Integral - an overall attitude control for roll angle when the aircraft deviates from the planned air route. c) Heading

damping for heading change in flight route is initiated.

iv)

Altitude control: a) Pitch control: the degree of angle control during pitch up or down. b) Altitude Offset Integral: an overall quantity of pitch angle control when the aircraft deviates from the set flight altitude. c) Altitude damping: the degree of controlling damper when you change from one altitude to another.

v)

Throttle control a) Speed control: the degree of pilot control for acceleration or deceleration for aircraft speed. b) Speed Offset Integral: an overall degree of control when the aircraft deviates from the target speed. c) Speed damping: the degree of controlled to dampen changes in aircraft speed.

vi)

Heading stabilization

a) Side offset damp: the degree of control for aircraft heading. b) Rudder Turn control: This setting is not active in the FY31AP. c) Rudder stabilization: the degree of control the heading stabilization.

Changing the Home point location

On default, when the FY31AP has picked up 5 satellite signals it automatically locks the GPS coordinates as the home point. By using the GCS, you can change this Home location. Click "Waypoint Editing" : Than press "Edit home point" button: The background will turn green.

e)

Depress the "Ctrl" key and click the target point in the Google Earth map when ready, then an icon will appear, that means you have uploaded a new Home location successfully.

f)

Save the new Home location onto the FY31AP by pressing:

Instant waypoint flying setting

a) Instant waypoint feature allows you to fly your aircraft using the GCS in real time. You only need to click on the map, and the aircraft will fly to the target point. b) To enter Instant waypoint flying, Click:

c) Click to turn the background green This indicates you have entered Mouse Click Point mode. d) Click Waypoint Editing, turning it green: e) Now click "Edit target waypoint" and turn it green:

f) When this button turns green, depress the "Ctrl" key and click the target point on the map:

The "Target Point" icon will appear, which gives your aircraft the point to fly to. You may click a new Target point at any time simply by depressing the "Ctrl" key and clicking with your mouse on the Map.

a) You may upgrade your FY31AP system with the optional FY3ZT Remote Adapter. This hardware is installed on your ground station. It connects your RC Receiver, Data Radio and PC. b) The Remote Adapter translates the PWM Signals from your RC Receiver into digital signal which is then transmitted via the Data Radio to your aircraft / FY31AP. c) By connecting your RC Receiver to the FY3ZT Remote Adapter, you don't need to install an RC Receiver on board the aircraft. This makes your on-board wiring lighter, easy and clean. this, you may also increase your flight range by using the long range 433 mHz Data Radio system. By doing

i) The main function of the FY3ZT Remote Adaptor is to digitalize the output signal from your RC Receiver and send this controlling signal to the aircraft via Data Radio. ii) The FY3ZT Remote Adaptor has 3 connections: RC Receiver, Data Radio and PC via USB-TTL Cable:
