Misalignment costs time and money

Shaft misalignment is responsible for up to 50% of breakdowns in rotating machinery. Those breakdowns cause increased machine downtime that translates directly into higher costs. Additionally, incorrect alignment places a greater load on machine components, resulting in increased wear and tear as well as higher energy consumption. To this end, industries spend vast amounts each year to remedy the effects of misaligned shafts. However, misalignment can easily be eliminated through preventive maintenance. Therefore, proper alignment saves not only money, it will also keep your machinery up and running longer and more efficiently. Traditional alignment methods do not often produce the exacting degree of accuracy required by today's precision machinery. The rough alignment methods still used nowadays may be quick, but they are also inaccurate. Another traditional method employing dial indicators does offer a higher degree of accuracy, but it requires specialist operators and it is quite time consuming.

What exactly is misalignment?

Misalignment occurs when the centre lines of rotation of two machinery shafts are not in line with one another. There are two types of misalignment: parallel and angular. In most cases, machine misalignment is actually caused by a combination of these two types.

The new SKF ShaftAlign, TMEA 1 Series, offer you simplicity with a high degree of accuracy at an affordable price. These highly innovative tools feature a three-step process for correcting alignment: measuring, aligning and documenting. First, you measure the machinery's current alignment status. Then you align the machine horizontally and vertically. Finally, you document and keep track of the alignment process. These three simple steps allow you to easily and effectively align shafts using advanced laser technology. All three versions of the TMEA 1 Series use two self-contained measuring units. A simple rotation process utilises laser technology to measure both parallel and angular alignment of the shafts. The clear and easy-to-read display unit calculates the corrections needed for proper alignment.

The principle of operation is easy:

Measure and enter three machinery dimensions (A, B, C) Rotate the shafts to three different positions Align the machinery according to the values indicated on the display Document and print the measurement data in order to have a record of the alignment data (applicable for both TMEA 1P and TMEA 1PEx)

The SKF ShaftAlign, TMEA 1 Series, allow accurate and precise alignment. After calculating the actual alignment status of your machinery, the display unit shows the actual values `live' that are needed to correct the alignment. This means that, as you adjust the machine, you will see the numbers on the display unit decrease to `0', which indicates proper alignment. Using this simple three-step process means that rechecking is not necessary. This process is carried out vertically and horizontally for both parallel and angular alignment.

Printer version

The new TMEA 1P offers you the advantage of keeping record of the alignment process. A clear and complete printout of the measurement data shows that the machine has been properly aligned within the allowed tolerances. The compact thermal printer is operated with the touch of a single button on the display unit, and the easy-to-read printout allows you to keep track of the alignment activities.

Intrinsically safe version

The TMEA 1PEx has been approved for use in intrinsic safety zones such as plants of the petrochemical industries. The TMEA 1PEx has received the European Standard (CENELEC) intrinsically safe approval classification EEx ib IIC T4.


SKF also offers a basic version of its TMEA 1 Series, TMEA 1, without a printer. The TMEA 1 is supplied with a set of blank alignment reports to help you keep record of your alignment activities.
