AN CÚRSA AINMNITHE or AN CÚRSA ROGHNACH HOW TO CHOOSE I'm sure that there are many students around the country who do not realise that they have a choice between studying a Cúrsa Ainmnithe (named course) or a Cúrsa Roghnach (your own choice of course). This applies to both prós and filíocht. In answering questions on this part of Páipéar II, it is important for higher and ordinary-level students to note that they now have the following choices: Rogha 1: Prós Aimnnithe agus Fíliocht Ainmnithe. Rogha 2: Prós Roghnach agus Fíliocht Roghnach. Rogha 3: Prós Ainmnithe agus Fíliocht Roghnach. Rogha 4: Prós Roghnach agus Filíocht Ainmnithe.

Páipéar II, ardleibhéal agus gnáthleibhéal FORMAT AND MARKING SCHEME

Because the examiners don't know in advance what poetry and prose you have chosen, they tend to ask questions that are more general and easier to answer. However, there are also some disadvantages: You generally have to learn the filíocht off by heart. There are some restrictions with the choices. PÁIPÉAR II ARDLEIBHÉAL Treoirlínte agus Nodanna Ceist 1: Prós (40 marc) Ba chóir eolas cruinn a bheith agat ar phríomhphearsana na scéalta agus a bheith in ann iad a phlé. Ba chóir eolas beacht a bheith agat ar phríomhimeachtaí na sleachtaí próis. Caithfidh tú a bheith in ann do thuairimí a chur in iúl faoi na gnéithe éagsúla de na sleachta agus anailís a dhéanamh orthu. Ba chóir duit a bheith ábalta tréithe na bpearsan a phlé go mion. Chomh maith leis sin, caithfidh tú a bheith in ann na téamaí atá iontu a phlé. Ceist 2: Próstéacs Breise (40 marc) Tá na treoirlínte mar an gcéanna is atá siad i gCeist 1 thuas. Chomh maith leis sin, ar nós Cheist 1, ba chóir duit a bheith ábalta na téamaí a phlé, agus a bheith in ann scríobh faoi na pearsana agus na himeachtaí atá sa téacs. Ceist 3(a) (Filiocht Ainmnithe) agus 3(b) (Filiocht Roghnach) (35 mharc) Mothucháin an dáin: Ba chóir duit a bheith ábalta scríobh faoi na mothucháin atá sa dán, agus tagairt a dhéanamh do na línte cuí sa dán. Téama an dáin: Caithfidh tú a bheith in ann téama an dáin a phlé, agus tagairt a dhéanamh do na línte cuí, i do fhreagra. Chomh maith leis sin, ba chóir duit a bheith ábalta scríobh faoi na híomhanna, samhlacha, pearsantú (personification) agus friotal, agus an tábhacht a bhaineann leo/ leis. Caithfidh tú a bheith in ann scríobh faoi mheadaracht an dáin. Ceist 3(c): Dánta Dualgais Bhreise (35 mharc) Ar an gcéad dul síos tá na treoirlínte mar an gcéanna is atá siad ag Ceist 3(a) no 3(b) thuas. Ceist amháin atá le freagairt ó (a) agus (b). Ba chóir duit a bheith in ann scríobh faoin chaoi a ndeachaigh an dán i bhfeidhm ort, na buanna agus na lochtanna atá sa dán, agus conas a thaitin (nó nár thaitin) an dán leat. Chomh maith leis sin, caithfidh tú a bheith in ann a bhfuil i gceist le línte áirithe sa dán a mhíniú.

SUGGESTED TIME MANAGEMENT

It is important for teachers and students to note that this is a significant change from previous years and gives students a much wider choice in this section of the course. These changes came into effect last year. THE PROS AND CONS OF THE CÚRSA ROGHNACH The Cúrsa Roghnach has two major advantages: You may get away with doing a much shorter course, ie fewer poems and prose stories.

YOU GENERALLY HAVE TO LEARN THE FILÍOCHT OFF BY HEART

ORDINARY LEVEL COMPOSITION

Páipéar I: Ceapadóireacht A: Giota Leanúnach (Aiste): Choice of three, usually in present and future tenses. B: Scéal: Choice of two, always in the past tense. C: Litir: Choice of two, in past, present and future tenses. D: Comhrá: Choice of two, usually in present and future tenses. Am: 60 nóiméad. Marcanna: 120 (2 x 60). Fad: Leathleathanach nó mar sin (about 150-160 words each). What do I have to do? Write two compositions of about half a page each in length. Be sure to write in the correct tense. Stick to the subject. How do I do it? Pick titles/subjects that you understand. Write your compositions in the correct tense. Make full use of the treasure chest of expressions that you have learned (nathanna cainte). Remember that 80 per cent of the marks are for your vocabulary, saibhreas teanga (richness of language) and cumas teanga (correct use of Irish). Essential Skills: Prepare for a few different topics and learn useful phrases and expressions for each topic. A good start and finish are important, so practise both. Things to avoid: Don't write long, complicated sentences. These are much more likely to contain grammatical errors which will cost marks. Don't stray from the point or from the title of the composition. Don't forget to check your verbs. Make sure they're in the correct tenses. Don't forget to go back over each of your two compositions after you have written them to check for grammatical errors, spellings, fadas (yes, fadas are important) and punctuation.
