Introduction

The Institute of Space Science in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University Malaysia) was established in August 2003. It is an inter-disciplinary research centre that supports research in space science and engineering and space applications. A major role of the institute is to support the programmes of the National Space Agency and implementation of the National Aerospace Blueprint. The Institute draws on the interests and expertise of scientists, engineers, social scientists and lawyers from several departments in the University.

Polar-Equatorial Ionospheric, Magnetic Storms and Water Vapour Characterization for the Advancement of Space Weather Prediction

Near Space (geospace) is an integral part of the Earth's system, providing an important connection between the sun and earth, primarily through polar regions. Antarctica offers a privileged position to study geospace due to the Earth's effects on magnetic storms particularly at the polar regions.

Contribution to IHY/IPY

Elements of investigations are to characterize the ionosphere, magnetic storms, and water vapour at the Antarctic, Arctic, and of the Equatorial regions with the aims at quantifying and understanding the Ionospheric characteristics and effects along magnetic meridian. Interhemispheric conjugacy effects, and Teleconnections between the upper and lower levels of the atmosphere. The goals of the research programme are: To indentify and quantify the physical mechanisms at work which couple the Earth to events from the heliosphere. To identify and quantify various mechanism that control interhemispheric regional differences and commonalities in the electrodynamics and plasmadynamics of the Earth's magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling system, and in aeronomy of the upper atmosphere over the Antarctic, Arctic, and Equatorial regions.
