Welcome to Sparrow Studioz

Welcome to Edmonton Alberta's first

creative quilting studio open to the general public. This exciting venture is the brainchild of Matt and Bradie Sparrow. "We have seen a lot of full-service quilt shops in our travels but have always felt a little pressured to purchase something with every visit. We wanted to open a studio where quilters could rent creative studio space to work on their various projects, without the pressure of buying fabric, thread or patterns.

DATES TO BE SET IN FEBRUARY Delightfully embellished beaded Mandala sampler bag Class pre-work Mandalas WORKING IN CIRCLES

Most bead embellishment classes require participants to bring a square to class approx. 12" x 12" piece of fabric, stabilized with batting and back, with binding, to use as a sampler to practice beading. In this class, we will work on a circular piece; the instructions for pre-class work and a supply list will be provided on registration. A reason for working in a circle is that when the class is complete, draw strings will make the sampler into a practical embellished bag. Also, there is a creative aspect of working in a circle. "Mandala" is a Sanskrit word for circle or centre and can be referred to as any circular imagery. When we work in a circle or with circular forms we access deep inner resources of knowing; we were created from an egg and live on a circular planet that revolves around the sun, and are influenced by the moon. Mandalas have a long historical and spiritual history Navaho sand paintings, Buddhist Mandalas (used as mantras), labyrinths worldwide, and, in the West, Rose Windows in large Gothic cathedrals. Carl Jung has used mandalas extensively in his explorations of the subconscious. As we work with circles, all the inner resources that the circles open up in us combine with all the skills we already have in sewing and quilting. We are encouraged to work in new ways and our work moves to new levels that are reflective of each of us as individuals.

QUILT GALLERY

Our Mission Statement

As quilters we understand the workmanship that goes into every Quilt. One of our many goals is to educate the general public of not only the history of quilting but also the dedication and commitment that quilters put towards their craft. When choosing quilt artists to feature in our gallery we are looking for passionate quilters whose body of work represents their journey and growth as a quilter. Our first featured quilter is Shirley Way. Shirley is the perfect example of how far a dedicated quilter can come in only five years.

by consignment

We asked Shirley to tell us a little bit about her Journey...

While I have been sewing for almost 50 years, I am a new quilter, having started only five years ago. I started out taking almost every class at Earthly Goods and experimented with almost every "traditional" type of quilt. From there I ventured into art quilts, starting with raw edge appliqué (commercial patterns) and then into more experimentation in more free form style. My first landscape quilt, based on Nancy Zieman's method won viewers choice at Creative Stitches in 2008. This year I am proud to say that I took one

second place, two first places and best in show. Currently I am delving more into my own interpretation of mixed media art, using anything and everything that could possibly used in this venue. This is an ongoing process, and a large learning curve. I guess you could say I am an experimenter of all things quilt and mixed media related. Come in and see Shirley's body of work now through March 1st, 2011

If you are interested in selling or showing your work in a professional gallery setting... please contact Joan Smith at Sparrow Studioz 780-463-4242.
