This is a full-time non-exempt position with benefits. . Summary Description

The Culture Operations Technician position has the responsibly to conduct all laboratory and spawn plant activates pertaining to the production of inoculum for Amycel cultures.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Prepares and/or formulates media types to best suit growth of each strain 2. Prepares cultures for long term storage in liquid nitrogen and extracts them according to the inoculum production schedule. 3. Assists in distribution of master cultures to R&D for safeguarding. 4. Coordinates culture and inoculum bulk up for new strains with R&D personnel. 5. Follows time lines for strain selection and inoculum production to adhere to spawn production forecasts. 6. Observes cultures on plates and on inoculum substrates on a daily basis to assure that culture morphology is within specification. 7. Inoculates and shakes inoculum pouches and the grain bags used for strain certification at the ITF. 8. Oversees packing and shipping of inoculum to other Amycel facilities. 9. Assists in managing culture maintenance data bases in the AS/400 and Access based programs. 10. Inputs inoculum information on a daily basis and generates reports upon request. 11. Willingness to stay current with information on edible fungi in books and research articles

Non-Essential Duties

1. Assists in maintaining and upgrading laboratory materials and equipment 2. Conducts monthly inventories of materials and supplies for ordering purposes. 3. Conducts monthly pouch inventories to balance with quantities in the AS 400.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 1. Knowledge of the basic safety practice and procedure related to the laboratory and plant environment. 2. Knowledge of all laboratory equipment used in the laboratories to include incubators, culture refrigerators, laminar flow units, analytical equipment, and autoclaves.

Required Training and Experience: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Bachelor of Science Degree in related field highly preferred but not mandatory. Knowledge of sterile techniques and clean room procedures. Knowledge of long term culture storage methods. Knowledge of growth parameters of all production strains and new strains on plate cultures and inoculum production substrates. Knowledge and expertise at selecting the best culture for use in production from a series of plate cultures and master cultures. Basic knowledge of microbiology and contaminants associated with the mushroom spawn industry. Knowledge of AS400 and Access data base systems that are the basis of the culture maintenance tracking system. Aptitude for detailed work.
