Importance of Surya

An article presented at the SJC Serbia Conference 2006, and published in the Jyotish Digest Oct-Nov 2006. The article highlights some of the core important concepts of interpreting Surya in the chart, and the various aspects of this interpretation. The interpretation includes the concepts: dharma of the person, karma of the person, abhijeet rasi, extent of raja yoga and wealth, slokas from Jaimini and Parasara reg. the same, Geeta, etc. This article has been corrected 17th October 2007. Corrections entail the removal of J.D Rockefeller Sr's birthdata and analysis due to unsure source, in favor of analysis of Donald Trumps chart and analysis.

Namaskar Guru Ji, My lagna is in Aquarius and Mars sits in the first house. My 9th house has sun in it (Libra) and Rahu in the 12th house. I am currently working as a prison officer. I am completing my Rahu Dasha in Jan 08. What can i do the aid the sun. My 10th house has ven, mer and Jup in it. Moon and Sat(R) in the fourth house. I have been closely following your lectures and I must say that it has enlighten me very much and leading me to the spiritual path. Thank you. Hare Rama Krsna. 3. fre Says:

Your website is unique. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing rich information. If Sun is in conjunction with a dusthana lord - then does Raja Yoga prevail and is it experienced by the native. I'll appreciate it if you can clarify. 4. fre Says:

I may be posting this in the wrong section. In one of your lectures you mentioned that A6 lord and planet relating to A6 depicts enemies and whom one hates. Depending on where your A6 lord is present - this will determine who one hates. Depending on which planet is in A6 indicates who your enemy is Questions: 1. What if there are no planets in A6? Who is there enemy? Does that mean they have no enemy? 2. For example: If A6 lord is in A12 - then this indicates foreigners are who one hates. Am I correct in interpreting this or should the planet be in 12th from lagna to come to this conclusion. 3. Does one have to interpret `who' depending on what the house (4th house - mother) signifies or what the planet signifies (Sun-Government)or keep both in mind. 5. Visti Larsen Says:

Dear Guys, Namaskar. Vishal The problems to As3 and As9 indicate that the atma of the child doesn't wanto enter the womb. This can be remedied through mantra, and your wife should be advised to recite the Santana Gopala mantra. Start from a Thursday at sunrise. Ajit Your tenth house from Moon will tell us about your profession, and there we have Aquarius joined Mars, and its lords are Rahu and Saturn... this does indicate a difficult and hard job. What do you want from the Sun? Meditate on the beeja of the Suns navamsa dispositor.

29-08-2008 a Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) site by Visti Larsen based in Frederiksber... Side 3 af 19

I.e. Sun in my chart is in Leo navamsa. So i meditate on the Surya beeja: hrauM. Where is your Sun in navamsa? Fre Thanks for the cudos. Rajayoga is dependant on the suns dispositor, and not the Sun himself. Reg. A6: 1) Some people do not have much hatred towards others, and have little reason to. Also some simply don't have problems with enmity. This is all seen from the A6, sixth house and its lord. Have you checked the lord of A6 too?.. Look for curses and see if they are linked to these two viz. A6 and 6th house. 2) A12 is the upapada and can indicate enmity with spouse. Arudhas inevitably indicate ones close social circle, so we cannot say that A12 will indicate foreigners. But, if Rahu influences A6 we can say that the enemy is a foreigner. Planets in twelfth from lagna indicate people overseas or who do not speak ones own language. 3) Keep in mind that hatred and enmity is a changeable concept. With A6 in the fourth the native may hate their mother for some time or problems within the family exist, and the reason/excuse would be seen from the planets joined/influencing the A6, i.e. Sun would indicate because of political issues, or because of monetary issues. Yet, the karaka of the fourth house and fourth lord itself must be assessed carefully before making any assumptions. With such options presented to you, you are bound to become confused. But we have a way to be specific. Two personalities who faced major enmity are Sri Krishna and Sri Rama. I will be explaining the formers chart below: Sri Krishna Natal Chart Date: June 24, -3227 Time: 0:19:00 Time Zone: 5:10:44 (East of GMT) Place: 77 E 41 00, 27 N 30 00 Mathura, India A repeating trend in both the charts of Sri Rama and Sri Krishna is a significant affliction to their sixth lords. This in itself points towards problems with either 1) disease/roga (shani) or 2) enmity/satru (mars). In Sri Krishnas chart, sixth lord Venus is joined Rahu and Mars. The latter indicating great enmity. No planets are in the sixth hence the conjunctions with the sixth lord will tell us of the means used by the enemy. Here malefic and weak planets show very terrible means used by the enemy, such as trying to kill, destroy, etc. This is a repeated trend in both charts of Sri Rama and Sri Krishna, i.e. debilitated malefics joined the sixth house/lord. Next, see the relationship between the malefics with the karakas of the houses they lord. This will tell us how the enmity affects certain people in the natives life. Venus is sixth and first lord. Obviously enmity with oneself is a different predicament all together, but the sixth lord can indicate uncles. See the relationship between Venus and Mercury to see how this can affect the relationship with uncle. Mercury is in the third (parakrama) from the afflicted Venus shows that there will occur wars/battles and strife with the uncle or maternal relatives. The reason is seen from the afflicted Venus.. Since there is Parivartana the issue can be due to mother (moon-venus parivartana). Also note that due to those malefics being placed in the 12th (bandhana/moksha) from the atmakaraka, Sri Krishna was born (lagnesha) in captivity (malefics in bandhana bhava). The Parivartana between Venus and Moon freed him.

Mars is the seventh lord, and its joined the karaka of the seventh - Venus. This doesn't show problems coming from the spouse, but does show that the coming of the spouse will bring such negative emotions such as fights, battles, etc... Sri Krishna did attract enmity from other families because of the way he married their daughters. Rahu is the tenth lord and can indicate problems from kings/rulers, provided that there is a problematic placement from the Sun. Sun is in the second from Rahu indicating a family dispute as the cause. The dispute is again all about that Venus, so probably the real dispute arose from Duryodhana's jealousy of the Pandavas pious wife. All this we could conclude without the use of the A6. Now see that the A6 is in Capricorn with Ketu indicating a pious and spiritual enemy who could use mantra or tantra as means for battle. Lord Saturn is the amatyakaraka and being aspected by Rahu shows that these enemies may especially pop up in his involvement in politics (mahabharata). This happens in the ninth house showing that a part of Sri Krishna's world view and purpose of life is to overcome enemies. Saturn is the ninth lord and is placed in the abhijeet Rasi from the Sun showing that he indeed is born to perform this dharma, and he is the embodiment of a dharma-avatara. With Moon strong in the lagna, and Jupiter, Sun and Mars all influencing Makara navamsa he is further defined as the Yuga Avatara. So the A6 does tell us about enmity and hatred, but we must also analyze the rest of the chart to get a clearer picture. Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen 6. fre Says:

Simply Awesome explanation With regards to my earlier question and your response was: Rajayoga is dependant on the suns dispositor, and not the Sun himself. I meant to type Sun's dispositor with a dusthana lord in rasi chart - how will this transpire. I have read that this is not good and the yoga does not prevail. Please explain. 7. Visti Larsen Says:

Dear Astroyogi, Namaskar Thank you for your blessings. Surya is Sarvatma karaka, therefore the 2nd from Surya shows what the Sarvatma expects from you. I.e. what you must give back to the world/sarvatma. The 12th shows what is

29-08-2008 a Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) site by Visti Larsen based in Frederiksber... Side 6 af 19

given by the world back to you. The dharma given to you is seen from the ninth. The dharma you give to others is seen from the fifth. As the Sun is the Sarvatma, the dharma which is given by the world to you is seen from the fifth from Sun. Pushkara navamsa gives the blessings of Brahma (Pushkara).. this can give great knowledge, but specifically protects the body from being destroyed. So, this will just protect the body, but may not protect against wealth issues. Check the placement of this planet from Arudha lagna to be sure. Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen 13. || Hare Rama Krushna || Namaskaar Visti Ji, Please consider the following chart: 07/17/1763 17:00 Hrs. 0:42:00 East of GMT 10E23, 50N36 Let us focus on the Surya in this chart specifically. In the Rasi Surya is disposed by Chandra that is in the 12th house in Rasi, and debilitated in Navamsa. This would make us say that he will have no Rajayoga in this life. In the Navamsa, Surya is in its own sign conjoined lagna lord and 2nd lord Shani. In Navamsa Surya is comparatively better disposed than in Rasi because of that Sarala Yoga, but lagna and 2nd lord Shani should try to bring it down because it is not happy in the enemy's sign. Looking at Surya in this chart, knowing what I know currently, I'd say that this person would have a hard time living an averagely affluent life. If we look slightly beyond Surya to Arudha Lagna, we notice that Mercury-Venus yoga in 6th from AL leading to a Pravrajya yoga. But let us not go to AL for natives with lagna lorded by two co-lords. Either way, this is the chart of one of the richest men ever - John Jacob Astor. You can read more about him here - How can such a Surya have given so much? What am I missing here? || Hare Rama Krushna || Namaskaar Visti Ji, I got the time for John Jacob Astor from the Birth Data Bank zip uploaded on Vedic-astrology lists. I believe that those charts have their times from AstroDataBank project, but I could be wrong. Yes, Moon could be in Kanya possibly in John Jacob's case. However, there are quite a few other charts where I have seen the dispositor of Surya not so strong. I am just waiting to get my hands on the birth details of these other charts. In the meantime, if you want to research, please look at the chart of this person - Barry Diller ( 02/02/1942, San Francisco, US, TOB not available so let us assume local noon This man is a legend in the media industry, and he saw success at a very young age. Surya's Rasi dispositor is debilitated Shani yuti Mangal in Rasi and in Dhanus navamsa. Shani does not change Rasi or Navamsa on that day. Surya's Navamsa dispositor is Moon yuti Rahu in Simha in Rasi and yuti Guru in Mithuna in Navamsa. Again, sign placement of both Rasi and Navamsa dispositors is not good at all. Even if we were to say that Moon changes sign in Navamsa on that day thrice from Vrishabha to Mithuna to Karka, that debilitated Shani could not have given Rajayoga to the native unless it was in the 12th bhava i.e. Taurus lagna. Which means that if Rasi dispositor of Surya is strong (by the virtue of participating in a Vipareeta Raja Yoga), the Navamsa dispositor of Surya is weak due to affliction by a dire malefic in Rasi and sign placement in Navamsa. Unfortunately, we do not have birth time of Mr. Diller otherwise this chart would have been a great case study. If you want I can provide other such charts for research. I have done extensive research into this dictum and I get a feeling that there are other parameters of ascertaining strength of Surya in addition to its dispositor's sign placement that Kalyan Verma would have liked us to consider. Thousands of souls take birth when Surya is disposed by slow moving planets such as Guru, Shani, Rahu, and Ketu. These planets do not even change Navamsa for weeks and months. Certainly their fortunes vary tremendously, even if they are born in the same lagna. Some other lines of thoughts within Parampara to ascertaining strength of luminaries are 1) Sarajit Ji wrote once that we should consider Sthana bala of the Shad bala scheme to ascertain the strength of luminaries. I have not done any study into this approach, yet. 2) Gauranga Ji wrote on the same thread that we should consider Amsa bala to ascertain strength of luminaries. I have not done any study into this, too. But I have a feeling that this does not hold true in many charts. So there seems to be multiple approaches even within Sri Achyuta Dasa's Parampara to

Dear Guys, Namaskar Reema You must analyze the planets placement from arudha lagna of course. I.e. a debilitated planet can be well placed from the arudha lagna. Further argala on the lagna, arudha lagna and atmakaraka is a final consideration for absolute rajayoga. You will see this approach taken in my article on rajayoga for the upcoming Jyotish Digest. will the person be known for service. Moreover, what does A6 lord positioned in the 7th from A6 mean? 20. Visti Larsen Says:

October 14th, 2007 at 11:06 am

Dear Aravinda, Namaskar When a person decides to give, then the A6 is service. Otherwise the A6 becomes a source of loss for you. Malefics hate giving and when they are joined the sixth house/a6 then enmity erupts. A6 joined the UL can mean that the spouse is a servant, or spouse will be the biggest enemy. Usually in case of the latter Rajasic planets are involved as they will give marriage initially and only serve as long as there is some benefit and then once there seems to be no benefit from their long-drawn service, then enmity arises. A6 joined AL can either make the person serving by nature or hate their family/community and run away from it. The placement of planets from the A6 will tell us how the servant or enemy is being benefited. Analyze these houses the same way as you did from the arudha lagna. The lord of A6 is thus their own actions which may or may not benefit the servant/enemy. Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen. 21. vishal sharma Says:

The fifth from Sun in your chart is Sagittarius, which is unoccupied and its lord is in the ninth house in a Gajakesari yoga and will grant deep knowledge and expertize in matters of sadhana, japa, higher education, consulting/advise, etc. As Moon is the amatyakaraka and joined tenth lord Jupiter, its surely going to be through your profession that this happens. However, with Jupiter and Moon in the sixth from Arudha lagna, it can show little material benefit from this. 2. Mercury in second from the Sun would make the act of writing a very inviting. 3. Strong benefics in the kendra/trikona are auspicious when retrograde. Remember to check their placement from arudha lagna.

Dear Members, Namaskar Srini Rajitha I had accidentally used the wrong birth date for you. Now Jupiter is alone as the fifth lord from Sun. The area of work is still the same, but the expertize arising out of the lacking Gajakesari is now different. So you can still use the keywords of teaching, consulting, being an advisor, learning japa, sadhana, etc. This can happen in a foreign country as Jupiter is Badhakesha and this can give great rajayoga due to Jupiters mutual aspect with Venus the fifth lord, and especially through marriage as Upapada is involved. You need to study the basics of calculating Arudha lagna. Your arudha lagna is in the fourth house of Virgo. Arnab This Yoga doesn't necessarily make you a teacher, but does bring you into a situation

29-08-2008 a Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) site by Visti Larsen based in Frederiksb... Side 13 af 19

where knowledge is shared. It is akin to the Dharmakarmadhipati yoga as both planets are karakas for the ninth and tenth houses. Also know that when yoga between the ninth and tenth lords exist, the karakas Mercury and Jupiter must be strong to give the full benefit of the same. It is a yoga for spirituality, of which there are 4 types, viz.: Venus associated with Ketu (meditation) or Mercury (mantra/japa). Here Venus shows those who follow the Asura guru and through their own personal efforts attain God. Jupiter associated with Ketu (meditation) or Mercury (mantra/japa). Here Jupiter is the Sura Guru and gives a Guru to learn these things. The Jupiter-Mercury yoga is thus quite important in ensuring that the tradition of teacher and student continues. Preferably this occurs in the human signs, viz.: Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius to grant sharing of knowledge, intellectual prowess and spiritual leaning. Even Pisces is excellent for this as it promises spiritual knowledge, yet less intellectual work, whereas the remaining signs lack this ability. Further, if this is in odd signs the native is more selfish in this pursuit and seeks self-made fame, whilst in even signs the native is more dutiful in their pursuit and works for the benefit of society. The placement from Lagna, Arudha Lagna and Karaka Lagna will show us whether this will be rajayoga or pravrajyayoga or in general how this will manifest. To overcome this i recommend that you take the name of Tara in your business or work in some manner. I have given a few lectures on arudha lagna, do make a search through my website. Ravi family Welcome, i hope you will benefit from this website. Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen 34. srini rajitha Says:

Thanks Vistiji. That is exactly what is happening with me. Efforts are wasted many times and I have no luck in the placements I try to do. When you ask me to use Tara, are you asking me to use the word "Tara" or use the name of a particular nakshatra? Will any particular mantra or prayer also help? 35. Visti Larsen Says:

Dear Srini Rajitha, Namaskar I mean that you should use the word Tara. Prayers to Tara will also help greatly. Yours sincerely, Visti 36. Lata Says:

Dear Visti, Namaste. Please let me know if this interpretation is correct. The fourth from Surya in my chart is Sag, and is empty, as is the fifth, Makara. Sani is in Pisces in 9th and Guru in 2nd in Simha with Sukra. Is the Dharma given by Surya to work hard and follow tradition, to achieve the Karma of learning or teaching Veda/Vedanga etc? If so, I am far from it :-). Thank you for your guidence. Sincerely, Lata 37. gkg Says:

Dear Visti, I am also a student of astrology. I would like you to comment on this chart relative of SUN the karaka for Father. The native of the chart had terrible relationship with the biological father although the father was very wealthy but was not only a miser but inflicted a lot of mental and sometime physical torture on the native. In the 20's the native left homeland for a foreign country and during this time made friends with neighbors upon which the patriach of that house took the native under his wings and supported the native financially for education, business and general well being. This turn of events (almost 360degrees in person's life is rather interesting). How do we interpret such a chart. Native both Dec 31, 1977 (7.30 GMT) with Taurus rising in RASI and Aries rising in Navamsa. I ran a chart using a software, Jupiter owned houses 8th and 11th had significant rupas, 10.28 and 10.02 respectively. Thanks gkg 38. Visti Larsen Says:

Dear Visti, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We took the GMT at 7.30 instead on 8 when casted the horoscope. Also please note the the horoscope has all retrograde planets and extremely powerful Jupiter which was noted via a software. Thanks 40. gkg Says:

Dear Visti, Additionally we also studied the Navamsa of the chart. The Navamsa seem to be powerful with most of the planets in their own houses or in parivartana (1st/ 7th - Moon and Venus. Please comment on any correlative. 41. gkg Says:

Namaste, I read your article on retrograde planets in the posts as well as in the article published at your website. In the posts, it says retrograde benefic planets in kendras/trines become powerful. What will happen if the retrograde jupiter is in 5th house in Sagitarrius sign? Will it be benefic or malefic? 44. Dear Visti, I could not find any mention of abhijeet rasi in the article, please can you advise on that. Also, how/why does Su in 1st/7th house affect longevity of a native wrt spouse, because anycase Su influencing 1h (occupation / aspect) is likely to kakshya vriddhi to the native. Many thanx SS 45. Dear Members, Namaskar Meera If you want a clear answer to your question, then go through all the comments of that article. But i can say that Jupiter, retrograde in the fifth in Sagittarius is very auspicious. SS Fourth house from the Sun is Abhijeet Rasi. I'm sure i mentioned this position in the article. Sun gives good health, and as written by Sanjayji in the Jaimini Sutras this can make one outlive the spouse if placed in the lagna in navamsa. Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen. 46. Soul Sadhak Says:

Dear Visti, Please can you mention the page number in the article. In one of his lectures, Sanjayji has mentioned worshipping devata represented by nakshatra (by degrees) in 4th rasi from surya - i was wondering what wud be the difference if the lord of such nakshatra or lord of the rasi (4th from Su) itself is considered for the required devata.

Does that dictum work in navamsa only (longevity) or can it be applied to Rasi chart too? Many thanx SS 47. Soul Sadhak Says:

Namaskar Vistiji, I have a doubt regarding the remedy for the shani's position in lagna..sanjayji in his audio lesson has made it very clear that having a very strong shani in lagna can cause a lot of financial and health problems. The remedy he suggests is worshiping sun with Gayatri mantra...but for a tula lagna person can sun be favorable?? being lord of 11th House.since for tula lag: shani is yog karak and jup and sun both malefic. Can you please clarify this? With Prayers, vinay. 49. vinay Says:

Naaskar Vistiji, To add to the above query i have sun debilitated in navamsa lag in tula, though in own house in rasi.So i suppose the situation is worse...! With Prayers, vinay 50. Visti Larsen Says:

Dear Members, Namaskar SS Thanks for the pointer. Vinay You've caught hold of the wrong end of the stick here. All mantras are meant to overcome the negatives of a graha, therefore Gayatri or any such mantra cannot be inauspicious for a person. What you need clarifying is that when we recite a mantra we are not worshipping the graha directly but are asking to be free of the bondage of the graha. So Gayatri is fine even despite the Suns placement in your chart... who can say that Savitur is Surya anyway? Yours sincerely, Visti
