The Saratoga Summer Dance Intensive (SSDI) is a four-week program of intensive ballet training geared toward young dancers who are interested in the evaluation and improvement of their skills by a faculty that includes some of the most experienced teachers and professional dancers in the world. SSDI offers classes at both intermediate and advanced levels, with the advanced level being particularly suited to young professionals in the early stages of their dance careers. With experienced company teachers and top-level working professionals as their role models for this intensive period, they can return to their company with confidence in the progress they can demonstrate. Students have many summer programs to choose from, but we believe that SSDI is truly unique in the advantages that it has to offer. SDDI studios are located in the center of Saratoga Springs, New York, the summer home of the New York City Ballet, and one of the most important educational components of the SSDI program is the opportunity for our students to attend NYCB performances at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. With daily intensive classes and evenings at the NYCB performances, SSDI students are fully immersed in the world of dance during their four-week experience!

Tuition

SSDI has both boarding and day student tuition plans at the following rates:

Boarding Student Tuition: $4850

The Boarding Student tuition includes room and board, all daily classes and workshops, transportation to and from the studios and all extracurricular activities, weekly evening focus sessions with Guest Faculty, and NYCB performance tickets.

Day Student Tuition: $2650

The Day Student tuition includes all daily classes and workshops. Day Students are responsible for their own meals and transportation. Attendance at NYCB performances is optional, and tickets may be purchased in advance upon registration with SSDI. Day students are invited to join the boarding students for all the SSDI extracurricular activities..

Residential Boarding

Another unique aspect of the SSDI program is that boarding students are housed in large private residential homes supervised by adult houseparents, creating a very home-like atmosphere. The houses are all located in quiet residential neighborhoods close to the studios, and although Saratoga Springs is a very safe, small community, boarding students are fully chaperoned at all times. Borders are not allowed to leave their residence or the studios at any time without adult supervision. Girls are grouped in houses based on ages so that their shared experiences will be similar and their social activities can be planned accordingly. Boarding students are provided with three nutritionally balanced, home cooked meals each day.Van transportation is provided to and from the studios and all extracurricular activities. Specifics regarding the boarding program, including what boarding students are to bring with them, will be provided upon acceptance into the program. The boarding students will also enjoy a 4th of July picnic, a trip to the National Museum of Dance and other local excursions during their stay in Saratoga.

Curriculum

The ballet curriculum will include daily classes in technique, pointe, variations, and repertoire. There is also a Pilates and Jazz component and a performance workshop that will prepare the students for a performance at the end of the session.

Guest Faculty

SSDI has assembled a world-class faculty with extensive performance and teaching experience. The faculty includes both former professionals who are now Master Teachers and professional dancers who are currently at the peak of their careers. This faculty presents SSDI students with the opportunity to learn from the very best in the business and to benefit from their years of experience and skill.

Application & Registration

Acceptance to SSDI is by audition only. The Audition Tour Schedule lists the dates and cities where auditions will be conducted by the SSDI program directors. Students can register at the audition, but it is highly recommended that students pre-register by mailing an audition registration form to SSDI in advance. Audition attendees will be notified of their audition results by email. Students who are not able to attend an audition may submit a videotape audition. Audition forms are downloadable off our website.

Partnering Classes with Jock Soto

An especially exciting component of the SSDI curriculum is the Saturday partnering class taught by Jock Soto. Each week, Mr. Soto will teach the basic aspects of partnering to the advanced level SSDI girls using NYCB male corps members as their partners. This opportunity to learn partnering skills from Jock Soto and dance with NYCB professionals is a highlight of the students' SSDI experience!

Faculty Talks

Members of the faculty participate in informal yet informative Faculty Talks. The discussions will focus on the world of professional dance and the characteristics and personal attributes that contribute to a successful career in dance. Students will have the opportunity to ask the dancers questions and learn about their differing career paths. This is a unique aspect of the SSDI program that can help students re-focus their own goals and provide additional incentives for their further study.
