SSVT thanks its devotees for their overwhelming responses to the off-site Satyanarayana pujas held at Gaithersburg and Herndon. About 100 devotees attended the event in Gaithersburg and 150 in Herndon. This was in addition to the Satyanarayana puja held at SSVT which had about 50 people attending. Priests Ramesh Babu and Janaki Ram Marthi performed the puja at Gaithersburg and priests Narayana Char and Thyagu Sastrigal performed the puja at Herndon. In both places the puja went from 7 to 10 pm with volunteers helping with the setup. Many devotees were very pleased and felt fulfilled by the fact that they were able to participate in the Satyanarayana puja which would not have been possible if they had to drive to Lanham on a weekday evening. We plan to continue to serve devotees with such off-site pujas. Currently off-site Satyanarayana pujas are planned to be held in Northern Virginia and Montgomery County on poornima days if it falls on weekday. If the poornima is on weekends, due to priest availability and other reasons, the puja will be held only at the Temple. Whenever pujas are held off-site the regular pujas will continue to be held at theTemple. If you like the pujas at additional locations or would like to have other pujas performed off-site, please let us know by e-mail to [email protected] or by calling the Temple manager.

Akshaya Tritiya is Parasurama Jayanti, where Parasurama is one of the Avatarams of Maha Vishnu. Vishnu, in this avataram of Parasurama killed evil kings for the welfare of people. On this day of Akshaya Tritiya, where akshaya means growth and tritiya is the third tithi, Parasurama is remembered. Any ritual done on that day leads to growth. Traditionally, jewelry and ornaments are bought on that day so that they lead to an increase in wealth. Gandha (Chandanam) Alankaram is done to Lord Krishna so that it cools the body in the hot summer lunar month of Vaishaka. Chandana Abhimanidevita is Lakshmi and chandana alankaram done to the Lord increases our wealth. The tradition of putting ornaments before God and taking them as Prasadam also causes the growth. 9:30 am Abhishekam to Krishna, Chandana Alankaram. 7:00 pm Vishnu Sahasranama Parayanam, Archana & Arati. 8:30 pm Deeparadhana, Prasadam Distribution. Sponsorship: Abhishekam $25

A local bank is offering a promotion whereby you can get the bank to donate $100 to the temple. The temple urges you to participate in this promotion and help raise funds for temple projects. Here are some salient features of this promotion. You need to open a new checking account. New checking accounts may be opened even if you already have other checking accounts with this bank. There is no minimum balance to be maintained after the account is opened and there are no fees. You go to the bank's website and designate "Sri Siva Vishnu Temple, Lanham MD" as the charity to which you wish to donate. Shortly after opening the account, you will receive a check card by mail which can be used to make purchases. After the check card has been used to make the first purchase, the bank will donate $100 to the temple. The deposits minus the check card purchases will be returned to you if you close your account. The checking account does not pay interest and the offer is limited to one per family. Please take advantage of this offer and help raise funds for temple projects. For more details about this offer, you may contact Raj Rajagopal at 301-983-6858 or Mythili Bachu at 301-476-9072.

We all have special days in our lives like birthdays, wedding anniversaries, etc. To offer our gratitude and prayers to the Lord on those days, the temple is offering a "One Day Puja Sponsorship" to all devotees. Under this program all the Pujas from Suprabatham to the closing of the temple will be performed in the devotee's and their family member's name on that special day. In addition when the devotees visit the temple that day a special archana will be performed to their chosen Deity (Ishta Devata) or all deities. This program offers the devotees the opportunity to sponsor all the pujas on the chosen day. Devotees may sponsor this annually for a donation of $501. Alternatively devotees may make a lifetime donation of $10,001 to cover the special day pujas during the devotee's lifetime. May the Deities of the temple bless us all. For more details please contact Raj Rajagopal at 301983-6858.

Your Special Day Puja

SSVT has established an Endowment to promote the Hindu heritage and ensure the long term financial stability of SSVT. The Endowment principal is protected and the Endowment is professionally managed. You can contribute to the endowment by setting up lifetime pujas for the deities of your choice or you can perform lifetime pujas on specific dates of the year such as birthdays and anniversaries. The prasadams will be mailed to you, if you are unable to attend. You can contribute cash or you can use estate planning mechanisms.

SSVT Endowment

a gift of life insurance. You can purchase a new life insurance policy or designate SSVT as the beneficiary of an existing policy which you currently own, but no longer need. If the Temple is designated as the policy owner, the premiums may be tax deductible.

Gifts of appreciated assets:

Stocks, bonds, mutual funds and real estate provide an excellent means of making gifts to the Temple. You may at once avoid capital gains taxes and obtain significant income tax deduction.

You can choose one or more of the following mechanisms:

Designate Temple as a beneficiary in your IRA or 401(k).

Asset Replacement Trust:

Please Donate Generously to the New Parking Lot Fund

The Asset Replacement Trust is a potential "win-win-win" mechanism. You donate an asset to SSVT endowment. You get income tax benefits for your donation. Life insurance is then bought for the equivalent value of the asset. Eventually, the insurance proceeds (the value of the asset) is passed to your heirs, income and potentially estate tax free as well. With this trust, you can provide for both your heirs and SSVT from your estate.

Gifts of Life Insurance:

5

You do not need an estate plan to contribute

Leaving retirement plan benefits such as Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or 401(k) plan, to heirs other than one's spouse may result in substantial payment of federal and state income taxes, federal and state estate taxes. By designating Temple as the beneficiary of the Retirement Plan Benefits you may be able to get substantial tax benefits. Please include SSVT in your estate plans and preserve your religious and cultural heritage for your future generations. Please consult your financial advisor or call (301) 983-6858 or (301) 646-1232 or (703) 204-0558 for more details.
