MULTIMEDIA LABS

Longman English Interactive 1, 2, 3, & 4

Longman English Interactive for is an ESL program that includes exercises and tests in listening, grammar, speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary, and reading. In order to use Longman English Interactive, a user must log in to the program with a username and password. The program has record-keeping capabilities, but only for students whose classes appear on the program's class list. The following instructions will outline the steps required to create a username and password, to enroll in a class, and to get around some sections of the program.

I. ACCESSING THE PROGRAM:

1. Double-click the Student Applications folder.

2. Double-click the ALC Applications folder.

3. Double-click the ESL folder.

4. Double-click the New-English Interactive 1, 2, 3, 4 folder.

5. Double-click the Longman CD-ROMs folder.

6. Double-click the folder for the level in which you want to work.

7. Double-click the icon to start the program.

II. LOGGING IN TO THE PROGRAM:

NOTE: To use the program without record-keeping, 25 generic usernames and passwords are available in the following format: Username = student1 Password = student1 (A list of all generic passwords for this program appear at the end of this help sheet.) GENERIC USERS SHOULD PROCEED TO PAGE 4 AFTER LOGGING IN. 1. In order to use the program with record-keeping*, a student must create a username and password, and select a class. To do so, select Click here. (*Record-keeping is available only if requested by the instructor).

2. Fill in the form as follows: Username* = student's UCC CWID/username (e.g., 12345678) Password*= student's UCC computer system password (the password must be entered twice) First Name = student's first name Last Name = student's last name

3. Click the Save button.

*The use of the UCC computer system usernames and passwords is for standardization only.

Students may use any username and password they wish (the password still must be at least 4 characters in length), as long as they remember them.

5. Click Edit Student Profile.

(NOTE: STEPS 5, 6, & 7 ON THIS PAGE HAVE TO BE DONE ONLY ONCE).

6. Select class from the drop-down list.

7. Click the Save button.

The lesson menu will appear, and the student's quiz and test scores will be recorded for the class selected.

III. GETTING AROUND THE PROGRAM: Illustration 1: Course Overview Screen

Maximize the screen. Click on an item to access it:

Longman Dictionary ­ look up the meanings of words. Glossary ­ see the meanings of words and phrases that appear in the section. Grammar Reference ­ review English grammar.

COURSE OUTLINE ­ similar to Overview, but allows selection of a specific exercise in a section.

SELECT A SECTION

MEET THE CHARACTERS ­ provides introductory videos for each character who appears in the section. PROGRESS REPORT OUTLINE ­ provides on screen reports of quiz/test scores for the exercises in the section.

COMMUNICATION COMPANION ­

activities for partners/small groups/class, based on the exercises.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES ­ outlines the learning goals for this set of exercises.

Video Listening ­ click to watch and listen to the video, and to answer comprehension questions. Vocabulary ­ click to learn and practice vocabulary. Speaking ­ click to practice speaking; record your voice and listen to it. Grammar ­ click to learn and practice grammar. Task Listening (or Listening Challenge) ­ click for more challenging listening activities. Pronunciation ­ click to learn and practice proper pronunciation. Reading ­ click to practice reading skills. Unit Summary ­ click to see a brief overview of the material covered in the exercises. Review Quiz ­ click to take the quiz.

NOTE: When the student exits Longman, it remembers where the student last worked in the program. Next time the student logs in, the program will go directly to that section.

NOTE: Exercises in this program incorporate various types of activities including fill-ins, drag-and-drop, multiple choice, etc. Each exercise section provides clear instructions for each activity.
