St. Agnes Parish Mission Statement

"Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, `Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, `Rise, pick up your mat and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth"--he said to the paralytic, "I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home." Mk 2:9-11

Please note, ALL St. Agnes Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are urged to attend an "Afternoon of Reflection" on Sunday, March 4 at 2:00pm in the church. The session will be conducted by Deacon Frank Difulco, and will center on prayer and reflection on this very important ministry. Please make every effort to attend.

A four part program of study and discussion While in the midst of our Carnival revelry, we know that Mardi Gras is not an end in itself, but a prelude to the much more serious season of Lent. Originally the time for the final preparation of catechumens for their initiation into the Church at Easter, it became a time for renewal even for those already Baptized. The whole Church, as it were, was seeking to make a new start, to embrace the life of Christ in total conversion of mind and heart. This year, Archbishop Gregory Aymond challenges all of us in the Archdiocese to enter into this Year of Renewal on the Mass by making a special sacrifice of time. The Archbishop asks us to read and to come together to discuss, in small groups, The Mass Explained, a brief but informative book about the Mass. The cost of the book is $6.00. We are being asked to sacrifice time to learn more about, to grow in our appreciation for and our commitment to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. These sessions will begin in our parish soon. There will be a one one-hour session each week for four weeks. The Sessions are as follows: 1) 2) 3) 4) Understanding the Mass Introduction and Word Eucharist and Sending Who We Are at Mass

FEBRUARY 19, 2012

Greeting you with love and blessings from God. How was your week? Hopefully even with this unpredictable weather, up and down, cold, hot, rainy, warm, you are still healthy. Well, finally the football season is over and we are in the carnival season, but not forgetting that basketball season is here. I wish you all a safe Mardi Gras and a good basketball season. Have a good time, but at the same time, get ready for the Lenten season, because it will be here before you know it. This Wednesday coming is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the 2012 Lenten season, and we Catholics have a tradition to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday. Below is the explanation of the process of the blessing and distribution of ashes.

ASH WEDNESDAY BLESSING AND DISTRUBITON OF ASHES: The blessing and imposition of ashes takes place only on Ash Wednesday, ordinarily during the celebration of the Eucharist. The Sacramentary contains the Rite for the Blessing of Ashes within Mass. The Order for the Blessing and Distribution of Ashes outside of Mass is found in the Book of Blessings. If the Eucharist is not celebrated, the blessing and distribution is to take place within the celebration of the Liturgy of the Word. The minister for the blessing of ashes within the mass is a bishop or priest. The minister for the blessing of ashes during a service of the word is a bishop, priest or deacon. Other persons may be associated with the bishop or priest or deacon in the imposition of ashes: e.g. extraordinary ministers of holy communion, and other lay persons, when there is a true pastoral need. These persons do not, however, bless the ashes. Special ministers of communion may bring blessed ashes to the sick and those confined to their home. If a minister is not available, a member of the family or another person may bring blessed ashes to a shutin, using one of the formulas in the Sacramentary to impose the ashes. Have a wonderful week. God Bless you and see you next week. Fr. Bac-Hai
