First Look at the Image Access WideTEK 25 Wide-Format Flatbed Scanner

Image Access released its new 17.7" x 25" color flatbed scanner in October 2008, which complements its current line of 36", 42", and 48" wide scanners. The hallmark of Image Access products is a very fast level of color scanning performance, and the WideTEK 25 is no exception. With a color scanning speed of 7.8 ips at 300 dpi, it clearly outperformed its closest competitors by a large margin. The WideTEK 25 addresses the needs of a range of different markets including graphics, reprographics, GIS, CAD, AEC, copy services, libraries, and more.

Features and Technology The WideTEK 25 connects directly to the local LAN and can be accessed via any Internet browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari) from a Windows, Linux, or Mac environment. There are no applications to install on your local computer, and you have a choice of using the scanner as a walk-up scanner and copier from the built-in touch screen interface or from your computer via an Internet browser. The WideTEK 25 uses the Image Access Scan2NET interface, which is very easy to learn and operate. One of the tricks Image Access uses to create its state-of-the-art color scanning speed is an embedded Linux computer that takes the images directly form the scanner and compresses them to JPEG format prior to sending the image file over the 1 GB LAN to your computer. This completely avoids the scanner interface bottleneck found on other scanners and allows the scanner to sustain a rated color speed of 7.8 ips, outperforming its closest competitor by more than 2½ times the speed. Image Access uses white LED lights for illumination of scanned documents. This gives a useful lifetime of more than 50,000 operational hours, making it unlikely that you ever have to replace the lamp. This capability also gives the scanner the ability for instant-on access, making it suitable as a walk-up copier. The WideTEK 25 supports a resolution range from 150 dpi to 1200 dpi in steps of 1 dpi, which should be more than adequate for most needs. The internal color capture is done at 36 bit in color, surpassing the 24-bit industry standard, to the computer via JPEG, PNG, or TIFF as well as a PDF option for approximately $450 more. The WideTEK 25 is easy to configure, and you can send the scans directly to a LAN printer or to any computer on the LAN via FTP and email. If you are located remotely, you can use the optional USB memory stick interface located next to the touch screen console and scan directly to it. This is very handy for using the scanner as a walk-up copier. The USB interface is an option for an additional $450. To facilitate the need to scan into popular applications like Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, Omnipage, and more, Image Access offers new software called Scan2Edit that gives the operator the ability to use these applications for editing the scanned image.

First Look report: Image Access WideTEK Wide format Scanner Lastly the WideTEK 25 is fully RoHS (Restriction on Hazard Substance) and Energy Star compliant. Since the scanner is Web based, the operator can upgrade the scanner firmware directly over the Internet. The WideTEK 25 is just shy of being able to scan an Arch C-size (18" x 24") with its 17.7" x 25" scanning area. However, most C-size documents do have a border, making the lack of a true 18" scan width less of a problem. Market Position The C-size flatbed color scanner addresses a specialized need in a market segment that has very few scanner models. Its price of $11,000 makes it the least expensive flatbed scanner in that segment; however a lot of potential prospects will still get "sticker shock." Granted it's larger than an A- and B-size flatbed scanner, but the price is also significantly higher. Because very few scanners are in this segment, the lack of competition prevents a reduction in the scanner price to a more reasonable level as viewed by prospective customers. However, due to its versatility in addressing the need of various market segments from GIS to CAD/AEC to graphics and library applications, it does offer a lot of productivity. Stanley Adams Group Recommendations For performance-conscious buyers, the Image Access WideTEK 25 is unique in its class with a whopping 7.8 ips scan speed at 300 dpi. Nobody else matches that performance. Priced at $11,000, it's also the least expensive C-size flatbed scanner in the market. Furthermore its LAN-based interface makes it very flexible for fitting into a mid- to large-size organization where productivity is the focus. We therefore rate the WideTEK 25 as highly recommended.
