Julie's Bakery, at the corner of Mission and Las Tunas in eastern Los Angeles, used to be a gathering point for a wide variety of early-morning patrons. A homeless woman with her shopping basket may have spent the night near the door. By dawn neighborhood winos would end up at Julie's. Soon after 6:30, prep school boys and girls would stop at Julie's before catching the bus to their inner-city school. Why Julie's? Why this street corner? It was the aroma of freshly baked bread, the sweet scent of hot pastries. Then, every morning at exactly ten before seven, Gary, the friendly baker, would appear at the side door with extra loaves to feed the day's hungry gathering. The scene never resembled a mob. Those waiting for the gift of bread were always orderly and respectful of one another.

them and spoke to them about the reign of God. Jesus did not accomplish this feat alone. In fact, he instructed his disciples to do the work themselves. "Give them some food yourselves," Jesus told them (Luke 9:13). Isn't it the attraction of the bread and wine consecrated into the Body and Blood of our Lord that that inducess young men to discuss priesthood with a trusted adviser, to check out a vocation website on the Internet, to fill out an interest survey they picked up in a church? The attraction to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is one that we all experience. Some men delve more deeply into Jesus' challenge to "give them some food yourselves," to find out if the only way they can find peace is to answer Jesus affirmatively by being a priest. And we can all give nourishment to those who accept ordination through our prayers, support, and encouragement.

___________________________________________________ LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT If possible, please consider including St. Bernadette Parish in your will.

Page Four THE MIRACLE I have commissioned a statue depicting Saint Leonie Aviat interceding on behalf of one of our children and the miraculous cure that occurred here in our parish community just eighteen years ago. On this occasion of the farewell to our Oblate Sisters it is befitting that we honor the founder of their Order who has come to mean so much to all of us at St. Bernadette's. In March, 1990, at the age of 12, Bernadette McKenzie, a student in our school , had been experiencing severe pain and underwent surgery for a tethered spinal cord. Two subsequent surgeries occurred in January and November of 1991. Her surgeon referred her to another physician, solely for pain therapy, since he felt her case was insolvable. In March of 1992 our grade school was run then, as it is now, by the Oblate Sisters of St. Francis de Sales, and Sr. Anne Elizabeth was its Principal at that time. On the 21st of that month Sr. Anne Elizabeth began a novena in the convent chapel to Venerable Mother Aviat, the founder of their Order praying for a cure for 15 year old Bernadette, who by now was unable to stand or walk and was almost completely immobile. The novena, attended by family, friends and parishioners quickly outgrew the chapel and was moved to the main church by Father Wright, our Pastor at the time so that more parishioners could participate. Sr. Anne Elizabeth had given young Bernadette a relic to wear around her neck and encouraged her to pray along with them to Venerable Mother Aviat and on March 24th, the third day of the novena, Bernadette began to feel a lessening of the pain and a return of strength. Before very long her doctor wrote on a prescription blank: "I see no medical explanation for the cure of this patient". On December 18, 2000, Cardinal Bevilacqua announced that Pope John Paul 11 decreed that Bernadette's healing was attributed to the intercession of Mother Aviat. The Holy Father's decree was the last major step needed for the canonization. Since the cure occurred in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the diocesan inquiry regarding the case was opened by Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua on September 8, 1994. It was submitted to Rome in November 1994. On February 17, 2000, a board of medical experts decided there were no scientific, natural or medical reasons for the cure. On June 23, 2000, a board of theologians decided that the healing was due to the intercession of Mother Aviat. On December 5, 2000, a board of cardinals and bishops, members from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, recommended the healing to the Holy Father as miraculous. On December 18, 2000 the Pope decreed the healing miraculous. On Sunday, November 25, 2001 Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Leonie Aviate in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy. The statue, by Wilmington artist Olga Nielsen will be a lifesize bronze depicting young Bernadette, her head prayerfully resting upon the lap of a seated St. Leonie Aviat, the saint's left Continued in next column...... Today in particular, we call to mind this memorial handed down to us through the ages. Indeed, we hear today of an even more ancient tradition of meal sharing in the first reading. But the meal that we share today is Christ's very Body and Blood, given to us on Calvary and made present every time we do what he commanded us to do at this altar. May our prayer today be one of thanksgiving for this great gift of the Eucharist. ___________________________________________________

Pvt. Charles Neighbor 29th Division Omaha Beach D-Day: It is hard to conceive the epic scope of this decisive battle that foreshadowed the end of Hitler's dream of Nazi domination. Overlord was the largest air, land and sea operation undertaken before or since June 6, 1944. The landing included over 5,000 ships--11,000 airplanes and over 150,000 service men. After years of meticulous planning and seemingly endless training, for the Allied Forces, it all came down to this: The boat ramp goes down, then jump, swim, run and crawl to the cliffs. Many of the first young men (most not yet 20 years old) entered the surf carrying eighty pounds of equipment. They faced over 200 yards of beach before reaching the first natural feature offering any protection. Blanketed by small-arms fire and bracketed by artillery, they found themselves in hell. When it was over, the Allied Forces had suffered nearly 10,000 casualties; more than 4,000 were dead. Yet somehow, due to planning and preparation, and due to the valor, fidelity and sacrifice of the Allied Forces, Fortress Europe had been breached. For just a moment . . . Think of everything you did today-- the breakfast you ate, the car you drove to work, the money you made and the TV you watch. Everything you know would not be, if not for those brave guys who made that endeavor for you that day on those French beaches and in those hedgerows, many making the ultimate their lives for a single we could live free. To all those who served... Thank You and God Bless You! God Bless America!
