We also have a Lenten pamphlet describing other opportunities for prayer. This may be a time to find a prayer partner through a friend or neighbor you invite to share reflections. If someone in your house is not going to church every Sunday, this is an opportunity to be God's invitation of love that speaks to their heart. Don't just ask favors of God. Allow yourself to be the blessing God sends to others to give them "A Second Chance." Fr. Ken Fleck Pastor: Associate:

A Second Chance

We all sin. We delude ourselves if we say we do not. Our human nature opens us to temptation. The three readings today remind us of this basic fault of being human. The gospel of Matthew almost makes God sound capricious, "At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil." I propose that Jesus went in to the desert to pray and prepare for his ministry. As a consequence of his preparation and his human nature he knew he would be tempted. Jesus knew that this time alone, fasting and praying, would help him face temptations in the desert and even stronger temptations later in life. Lent offers us that same invitation, to enter into a desert experience through which we fast and pray, face our faults and failings, and prepare ourselves for what temptations lie ahead. It takes faith and trust that God will give us the strength we need. It also takes a commitment on our part to fulfill what we commit ourselves to doing. Rectory

Most have had a "second chance". Perhaps it has been a near miss of an accident in a car through our fault--talking on a cell phone or some other distraction--but we avoided a potential tragedy. If we go back to our old habits, then we did not learn our lesson. Being creatures of habit, we all have our bad habits and sometimes sins that seem to cling to us. Lent is a "second chance" to rid ourselves of these habits. Nature abhors a vacuum (this has nothing to do with house cleaning) but if we rid ourselves of a bad habit something has to fill its place. If we do not see ourselves in a new light then the old devil will come back with more devils worse than the first one. The answer is obvious--"try something new". If idle time is your window to temptation, take up a new hobby, volunteer to help somewhere, read from the Bible or other books you like reading. Lent is the second chance we all hope for when we get caught doing something wrong. We have a merciful judge whom we call "Our Father". I hope you take advantage of the

A national call for 40 days of prayer and fasting to end abortion began on February 6th and runs through March 16th. During these 40 days, please make an extra effort to pray and fast for the end of abortion in our nation. If you pray regularly before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament at Holy Family Chapel, please include the intention of a successful 40 Days for Life vigil in your prayers. Last fall, 40 Days for Life nationally led to over 300 babies saved from abortion, conversion of some abortion supporters and employees, and more public awareness that abortion is a poor choice. You may also join a prayer vigil to be held on Saturdays 2/16, 2/23, 3/1, 3/8, and 3/15 from 7:00AM to 7:00PM at Family Planning Associates abortion mill at 659 W. Washington in Chicago. If you are able to participate in one or more of these vigil days, even for an hour, please contact Mike Swift at 773-718-0675, or by email at [email protected], to let him know when you can help.

Each of these traditions places peace at the center of its vision of human flourishing, yet their struggles to transcend culture of geographic limit is pursuit of single human community have often brought them face to face with its opposite. This seminar will consider social and Esoteriological orientations to peace in Christianity, Islam and Buddhism and bring us some understanding of the religious problem of peace.
