In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of the God!" Jesus rebuked him and said, "Quiet! Come out of him!" Mk 1:23-25

FIRST FRIDAY: The monthly First Friday Mass for Priestly Vocations will be celebrated this Friday, February 3 at 9:00am. Please join us as we pray that more men will hear and respond to God's call to serve as ordained priests.

As you may well know, the Archdiocese of Boston has been engaged for some time now, in efforts to best serve the pastoral/spiritual needs of the Catholics of Boston at a time when the number of priests available for such service is in a sharp decline. It is estimated by those involved in planning for this very different future, that in ten years there will be less than 200 active priests in the Archdiocese. At the present time, we have almost 300 parishes, and even a basic understanding of mathematics tells us that there is a ls problem here. The concept/model which has been chosen to bring us into the future is one by which most parishes will be "partnered" with one or two other local parishes to create what is being called a Pastoral Service Team. Allow me to quote directly from t e the draft of the proposed plan: "The Pastoral Service Team (PST) will be a group of priests, deacons, pastoral associates, lay ministers, parish pastoral and finance councils who provide services to multiple parishes. The members of each PST work together under the leadership of one pastor. The PSTs have two goals: meeting pastoral and spiritual needs of Catholics in each parish so as to strengthen their communion in Christ, and to draw the parishes into a tighter bond for the work of the New Evangelization. This proposed new structure does NOT involve changing the parishes themselves, nor is it an alteration of our individual parishes. The Catholic faithful will continue to be members of their own parish and each parish will re retain responsibility for its own assets and liabilities, including the church and the other buildings it owns. A key element in the introduction of the new PST structure for serving the parishes is the expectation that the parishes of each collaborative will come together ll under the guidance of the PST to develop a local Pastoral Plan for Mission. Each Pastoral Plan should be designed to ensure the identity of each parish, while at the same time encouraging and leading parishes to work together in their pastoral collaboratives for our toral common mission of Evangelization." Regarding the appointment of the pastor of each PST, the draft document states the following, "Ordinarily, the pastor

in a PST will not have been the pastor of a parish by that PST." As you may know, last Wednesday it was ou announced that Saint Helen Parish would be partnered with St. Mary Parish in Hanover and St. Thecla Parish in Pembroke. How this plan for Pastoral Planning will unfold in the months and years ahead, we will all have to wait, work and see. Many details, such as the all important time line are still to be determined. In my own view, I believe that we, the Church of Boston, wn would be best served by a slower, rather than a quick process. That, however, is not my decision to make. At the present time, we all need to pray that plans put into action will truly best serve the Church of Boston and faithful Catholics of this local Church. There is still much discussion and planning to be done, and I pray and hope that the words, feelings, emotions and word ideas of all within the Archdiocese will be heard and given the attention they so rightly deserve. Father Maguire FROM THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE: SERVICE Due to changes in the federal tax laws for charitable contributions, parishioners who itemize deductions on rs Schedule A of their tax returns will no longer be able to deduct contributions to the parish unless they maintain a bank record or receive a written contribution statement from the parish. Cash contributions that are not in a parish envelope cannot be tracked by the parish and will not be included in the year-end contribution year statement. Our parish will track contributions made using the envelope system, and will, upon request, produce a written statement of contributions made during 2011. This information will include the name of the parishioner, date of each individual donation, and the dollar amount. If you would like a printed report of your giving for 2011, please call the Rectory. The parish cannot track cash contributions, regardless of the contributi amount, that are not part of our parish envelope system. HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE: Invitation from Fr. PILGRIMAGE Ed Serena: In May of this year, we are taking another pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It has been a great privilege and grace to have traveled to the Holy Land on about 14 occasions.
